It is my privilege and my pleasure to assist individuals, couples, and families in addressing and resolving the effects of overwhelming experience in their lives. I provide assistance in regard to a wide range of experiences from severely traumatic events to more commonplace life challenges. My areas of particular strength lie in the areas of trauma resolution, grief and loss, death and dying, and in non-pharmacological approaches to stress reduction and pain management. As well as being well versed in regard to traditional (or mainstream) psychotherapy, I have an enormous appreciation for alternative and complementary approaches to mental health care and possess training and experience in multiple modalities including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Ericksonian Hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), SE (Somatic Experiencing), EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), and Brainspotting. Clinical supervision is available both for mental health professionals and for those preparing for social work licensure. I maintain a private practice on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and also enjoy serving as the Treatment Service Coordinator for Trauma/EMDR for the National Institute for the Psychotherapies.

Psychotherapist
I’m a trained psychotherapist with 15+ years experience working with adults and adolescents. I specialize in treating trauma, anxiety, OCD, depression, self-sabotaging behaviors, and relationship problems. I integrate various treatment approaches and theories in my work with clients, including somatic experiencing, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, attachment theory, spirituality, and buddhist meditation. I work in an empathic and supportive environment, helping clients to rapidly get to the core issues which keep them stuck in their lives, unhappy in relationships, or chronically depressed, angry, or anxious. Almost always, what creates suffering is the avoidance of painful feelings and/or experiences. When we avoid these painful feelings, we become more anxious, more depressed, or more angry. This leads to a vicious cycle of problems within ourselves (i.e, depression) or in relationships, which cause us even more suffering. By bringing to the surface the deep and buried, often complex, underlying thoughts, emotions, and experiences and working them through (feeling them in the body, understanding their source), this frees them up. And the unwanted feelings (anxiety, depression) or behavior melt away on their own. This then allows us to be more connected to both ourselves and others, to have more intimacy in our relationships and to feel more fulfilled in general. Using this approach, significant and lasting change can happen rather quickly, much quicker than most other therapies out there. And because these changes occur at a deep level, they tend to be lasting.

Connect with your Best Life and Relationships
Are you struggling to connect with your child? Do you have difficulty setting boundaries and getting results? PARENTING IS HARD. There are no books or guidelines to follow. Sometimes you just sit there and think, “Where did I go wrong?” or “How did we end up like this?” You want to be a support and help your child while also setting appropriate boundaries and providing a good example. I help parents connect with their children and bridge the gap in communication. Children and adolescents tend to feel misunderstood by adults, especially their parents. My specialty is assisting in creating that understanding relationship, while also allowing parents to maintain the appropriate boundaries necessary to allow their children to thrive.

Do you feel like you need somebody to talk to? Have you been thinking about seeing a psychologist or counselor for a while? Many people like yourself seek a therapist out, rather than solely friends or family, for different reasons. Some are worried they may be judged. Some don't think others necessarily "get" them. Other people don't want to feel like they are burdening friends and family with their problems. Perhaps you think friends and family have done their share of listening, and it's time for you to work with a professional. I believe that almost everybody, from time to time, can use the help of a psychologist or therapist. Most of the people I see in my practice are highly successful professionals (I include in this group stay-at-home parents, whom I consider to be both successful and professional). Services offered include: Counseling (in person, and phone sessions available) Couples Counseling Life Coaching Sliding Scale Counseling

I provide in home or in office counseling services to families with children between the ages of 2 and 10. I work in collaboration with parents to develop effective interaction patterns that support children through many of life's stressors and transitions. I also currently work within the school system as a counselor; therefore, I am able to support parents through the overwhelming IEP/504 process. I am familiar with many medical and educational disabililties and can support children in reaching their full potential regardless of the challenges they experience. Although I have an extensive background in dealing with children, I see each child as an individual with a unique set of talents, strengths and goals. Therapy builds upon those talents and strengths as the child moves towards the goals they set.

I believe in a holistic approach to mental health. This philosophy focuses on moving towards core values and learning to recognize behaviors that prevent us from seeking those values. I practice Acceptance and Commitment Therapy techniques, which use acceptance and mindfulness strategies together with commitment and behavior change strategies to increase psychological flexibility. We can use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to manage issues like anxiety, depression, and stress. Interpersonal psychotherapy and insight-oriented therapy are other treatment modalities that are helpful when dealing with social skills challenges. I also offer Walk & Talk Therapy. This style of therapy has been around for several years, and it is a big contrast to sitting on a couch talking about problems. More evidence is pointing to the connection between the mind and body. Because movement improves our physical health and mental clarity, this type of therapy is very effective for those people who feel stuck.

Intensive, Compassionate, Treatment Focused On Your Goals
Are you needing more focus and overall life success? Are you struggling with bad relationships or bad habits (gambling, pornography, drugs, alcohol)? I teach a three-step process for developing a new life plan which will help you get "unstuck". Working with me is about focusing on strengths and goals and discovering your core strengths. My office is a safe place to dream, question, and grow. The reward IS worth the risk. One of my favorite vision quotes: "Vision is greater than baggage." I specialize in making relationships, attitudes and habits focus like a laser beam on the life goal you're seeking. I'm trained by the California Office of Problem Gambling to serve clients and families of clients with gambling addiction. (Funding for treatment to be available by mid-summer 2010) Use my online scheduling service or my 24/7 answering service to schedule your appointment. Zari, my certified therapy dog, is with me most of the time. She provides one more reason working with me is a safe place to create the outcomes you want. Email me for personal introductory video.

Are your relationships troubled and disappointing? Do your fears and worries get in the way of your being your most creative, productive self? Do you sometimes find yourself in the same situations or repeating behaviors over and over, and you don't know how to find your way out? Habitual ways of reacting and behaving often began as the means of coping with the stresses of childhood, but are no longer useful or appropriate. I would like to help you become "unstuck", become less anxious and worried, feel more comfortable with yourself and happier with your relationships and work. In sessions, I work to listen deeply and create an accepting atmosphere. There, you can become curious about your thoughts, feelings and actions, explore how your past is influencing your life today and confront the repeating patterns of emotional reaction and behavior that get in the way of your finding satisfaction in your relationships and work. My approach to therapy is eclectic with a strong psychodynamic base for understanding the problems that bring people to seek help. In addition to my training in psychology, my early training was as a dance/movement therapist and I continue to have an interest in the connection between mind, body and emotions and the nonverbal aspects of communication and relating.
