An Atmosphere of Change
Sometimes you discover that the path you find yourself on is not the same path you had set out on in the beginning. By participating in the psychotherapy process, you allow yourself to strengthen what is best in you, so that you may become more effective and satisfied in dealing with challenges you encounter in your life. I work with you to help you rediscover and nurture your innate strength and capabilities and to use your inner wisdom to guide your actions and sooth your emotions. Therapy can help you build on the capacities that you have already developed. It can also help you learn how to think about old problems in new ways and how to act differently when facing them. To the extent that it is necessary, therapy can allow you to take a broader look at what has gone wrong in your life and what improvements will be necessary for your circumstances or experiences to become more satisfying. Beyond looking at yourself clearly and mastering new skills, therapy will help you develop greater self-control and self-esteem. I offer counseling sessions for individuals, couples, and families.

Online Psychotherapy
I offer an alternative to traditional in-office therapy through secure, HIPAA compliant video sessions on doxy.me. My practice is rooted in accessibility, compassion, and integration, making therapy available to anyone seeking growth, healing, or clarity no matter where they are. I work with adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions, and the complex emotional patterns that shape our lives. As an Integrative Therapist, I draw from a variety of theoretical approaches including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, mindfulness-based, and humanistic frameworks. This allows me to tailor each session to the unique personality, needs, and goals of the individual. Rather than adhering to a single model, I help clients uncover what truly works for them, whether it’s developing insight into the past, learning new coping skills, or cultivating emotional regulation in the present moment. My approach emphasizes authenticity and collaboration. I believe that therapy should be a safe and supportive partnership where you can explore your story without judgment. Many clients come to therapy feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or uncertain about how to move forward. Together, we work to transform those feelings into understanding and action. You will find that our sessions balance structure with flexibility, allowing space for both emotional depth and practical problem solving. Online therapy offers the utmost convenience, privacy, and comfort. Sessions can be scheduled at times that fit your lifestyle, removing the obstacles of travel, traffic, and scheduling conflicts. Many clients appreciate the ability to connect from their own home or private space, where they often feel more relaxed and open to self-reflection. For individuals who are apprehensive about visiting a therapist’s office, telehealth creates a sense of safety and ease that encourages engagement and progress. Confidentiality is central to my practice. doxy.me is fully encrypted, secure, and compliant with all federal privacy standards. You can trust that your personal information and session content remain completely private. Therapy is an investment in your well-being and your future. Whether you are seeking relief from stress or anxiety, working through depression or trauma, improving your relationships, or simply striving for greater emotional balance, I provide a compassionate and nonjudgmental space where real change can occur. My goal is to help you develop resilience, insight, and tools that will continue to support you long after therapy ends. If you are ready to begin, reach out to schedule a session. Together, we can create a path toward healing, growth, and lasting change.

Are You Feeling Down and Can't Stop Crying? Is Your
Relationship Off Track? I Can Help You Live Better!
How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. If I will feel that I may not be the right fit, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who specialize in the issue you are seeking a solution for (i.e., pain management). We will also discuss fees. In our first session I will go over the inform consent and office policies with you and will collect data for the intake. I will become very involved with you and we will work as a team. I will ask you what your goals are and after a couple of sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will be in a very safe and supportive environment. I will learn to know who you are and what your personality is and I will adapt the therapeutic process to meet your individual needs. We will discuss your progress as we go along and make changes if the need arises. We will also discuss those changes to ensure that we are on the right direction in your path for personal growth.

Couples Counseling
Tired of knowing what the problem is, but not knowing how to solve it? I have helped many people recognize their true potential while helping them overcome their emotional difficulties. I use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, which has a strong basis in science with studies demonstrating effectiveness in depression, anxiety and other problems. With this technique, we change your thought processes in order to alter behaviors and feelings. I look forward to helping you explore practical methods to help you through difficult times, as well as for self improvement. In addition, I help my clients understand how their past experiences are directly connected to some of their current emotional roadblocks. I use EMDR to address past and present trauma, phobias, anxiety and depression. Couples Counseling - Many couples are inundated with work and child rearing responsibilities and, as a result, lose touch with each other. Utilizing techniques from Dr. John Gottman, and Dr. Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, I have helped many couples reconnect and reestablish their love relationship with a deeper understanding of one another.

I believe that psychotherapy is a place where, in a safe and confidential environment, you can talk about your most personal thoughts, feelings and life experiences. For a variety of reasons and at different ages, a person may find themselves suffering from painful feelings and exhibiting behaviors that negatively impact some or many aspects of their life and even their health. The psychotherapeutic process provides an opportunity to explore and understand these feelings and experiences through a clearer lens. Ultimately, this brings about positive changes in the way you see yourself, and choices you make. You can learn healthy coping mechanisms, improve communication and have more control over those things that undermine the success of your life, whether you are a teenager or a senior. Of course, there are a variety of reasons and stages of life that brings a person to therapy. Whatever it is, the work will lead to a relationship with yourself that is more loving, honest, constructive and nurturing. No matter what your age, that relationship is essential to living an authentic, healthy and rewarding life. Sometimes, life presents you with situations and problems that seem more than you can handle. Relationship difficulties, parenting problems or problems with parents or peers, health issues, loss, or a dissatisfaction with life can get expressed in a lack of energy, depression, sadness, or anger. Therapy can provide a healing pathway. Working with a qualified and experienced therapist can help you change your life. As difficult as it often is to take the first step, once you do, you are likely to find there can be great relief in reaching out and sharing your story.

If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes!
Taking the first step...
I believe in taking a holistic approach to counseling. Since most issues are interrelated, positive change in one area begins a ripple effect of change in others. My training and over 25 years of clinical experience is diverse, addressing issues related to relationship problems, anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma, grief and stress. In addition, I offer two women's groups and an individualized Anger Management Program. Since 1995, I have been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma. Courses taught include, Understanding Addictions, Stress Management, Chemical Dependency, Human Emotions and Advanced Counseling Skills. One of the most effective interventions I use is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, (EMDR). It is enormously successful in treating PTSD and is often used with complicated grief issues. EMDR came to Oklahoma in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, on April 19, 1995. This tragedy resulted in widespread trauma and grief, throughout the state. A team of volunteer EMDR therapists immediately flew into Oklahoma City and worked tirelessly for several months, providing this therapy to victims, survivors and rescue workers. I was fortunate to have been in the group of 300 licensed therapists who were trained to carry on their work. As a result, I became certified in EMDR and have incorporated it into my therapy practice. It has allowed my clients to more effectively cope with and resolve a wide variety of issues and problems affecting their quality of life. EMDR continues to be one of the fastest, most valuable resources for individual healing. I am a Licensed Marital & Family Therapist, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Master Addictions Counselor and a Certified EMDR Therapist. My practice utilizes cognitive-behavioral therapy, showing the connection between thoughts, feelings and behavior. I also offer assertiveness and stress management training, in addition to chemical dependency counseling and chemical dependency interventions.

Counseling for Individuals, Children, and Adolescents
Are you looking to make a positive change in your life but not quite sure what or how? Are there transitions in your life and you are unsure of how to cope with them? Do you have children and adolescents that you are finding hard to relate to? Do you feel stressed because of everything life throws at you? As your clinician, I want to work together to find a solution to these challenges. As humans, we should not have to deal with daily stress as a part of our lives and we shouldn’t have to figure it out all on our own. I specialize in working with children and adolescents. These two age populations are crucial in human development. During these stages of life, children experience many confusing emotions that relate to self identity, peer relationships, family relationships, life transitions and school. Working with children that range from 2-18 years old has allowed me to develop my knowledge with this delicate population. Working with children and adolescents, I have been trained to use different theoretical approaches, that which includes systemic, cognitive behavioral, postmodern, and humanistic. I also have experience working in the school setting providing counseling support and working within special education. My role is to provide support not only to the child, but also to the parents and family.

Do you feel that your life is out of control? Do you feel misunderstood? Are you worried about the way your child or teenager is behaving? Do you wish things could be different? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, then you’re not alone. Many of us experience ups and downs, and perhaps you’re experiencing more downs than ups. So how do you change that? Sometimes all it takes is one or two changes to get your life moving in a more positive direction. Together, we can figure out the changes that you can comfortably make to achieve a more fulfilling relationship, or to have a better understanding of your child or teenager, so that you will experience a sense of calm and happiness in your everyday life. I can also meet with your child or teen, individually or in a group setting and help them with issues such as: anger management, bullying, depression, socialization skills, and drugs & alcohol abuse. In addition to traditional talk therapy, I have created a therapy system called OM Rhythm Therapy, using hand drums and small percussion instruments, which I use with children and adults. I also play the didgeridoo, an Australian Aborigine instrument which is one of the oldest instruments known. The didgeridoo induces a meditative state, as well as a form of vibrational healing.

Effective Short Term Treatment
I have been in private practice for over 20 years working with children, adolescents as well as adults. I work from a cognitive-behavioral perspective and specialize in treating anxiety disorders. I also treat many other problem areas. Parenting issues are of great concern to many of my patients and that is a large part of my practice as well. More recently I have incorporated mindfulness concepts and have found that all of my patients who are interested in some of these ideas have benefited tremendously from this. I believe therapy is a collaborative process between the patient and the therapist. I may have the education and experience but it is the patient's life and we need to work together to find the solutions that work for each person.

Welcome to Lori Underwood Therapy in San Diego! You have access to help TODAY with your most critical relationships! I focus on achieving realistic, lasting results for highly motivated San Diego professionals and their families in two critical areas: work and family relationships. Mine is a solutions-focused therapy practice with a proven track record of training high-performing individuals to guide their most important relationships into balance–quickly and effectively. Work relationships can cause stress, affecting family relationships. Some symptoms of job stress you may be experiencing include, but are not limited to: •Absenteeism •Anxiety •Depression •Extreme anger and frustration •Family conflict •Insomnia •Loss of mental concentration •Physical illnesses such as heart disease, migraine, headaches, stomach problems, and back problems •Substance abuse Markers indicating your work relationships may be out of balance include: •Feeling burned out •Most everyone you know thinks you’ve got everything together, when inside you feel like you are falling apart •No matter how hard you try you overwhelmingly feel like nothing ever seems to be “good enough” •Others tell you they know you can do it, but deep down you’re left wondering if you can Family relationships that are out of balance can result from and/or be the cause of stress at work. If your stress is affecting–or is a function of–your relationship with your spouse, ask yourself if you are feeling any of the following toward (or from) your spouse: •Contempt •Criticism •Sarcasm •Stonewalling If you are experiencing one or more of the above, now is the time to take action. Each emotion can often represent a marker of a stress fracture in your relationship. The good news is your relationship can be repaired. You have the answers inside you and together we can identify them. Know that there is hope for you and your relationships. I am confident I can help you TODAY.

I utilize several modalities of treatment including Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Solution-Focused therapy, Play theapy, and Sandtray therapy. I mostly work with individuals but also work with their families. I work with all ages of patients who have lost a loved one recently or not so recently to work with them on the grief process. Many ages of patients also experience anxiety that I assist in teaching them anxiety skills management. Many children and adolescents struggle with some sort of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and I work with them on strengthening their executive functioning skills like increasing attention and focus, decreasing impulsivity, etc. I also teach the parents skills to assist their child. Many of the children or adolescents I work with have an emotional or behavioral disorder. I am currently working on a play therapist certification. I have also worked with people who have eating disorders, relationship conflicts, job stress/issues, adults and children experiencing divorce issues, substance abuse, compulsive gambling, gender identity issues, selective mutism, sensory processing disorders, attachment issues, etc.

Simple Solutions for Complicated Lives
Be Your Own Guru~Tuning In To Inner Clarity
Of course you are affected by your loved one's behaviors. How could you not be? It makes perfect sense that you would want to support and give to the dear ones in your life. But sometimes focusing on other people can become a problem. Especially if prioritizing others and trying to anticipate their needs before they've even voiced them has been the main source of one's validation, praise, even identity. This pattern can stand in the way of your success if it leaves no energy for your personal development. People can find themselves feeling lost and lonely in their own lives. Feeling purposeless, unmotivated, drifting, can be signs that something is wrong. Because in study after study, human beings have shown themselves to be overwhelmingly drawn to work they are passionate about, motivated to be part of making a difference, endlessly creative when given the right circumstances, wanting to make connections Often people don't talk about the way they are feeling because they're afraid of the stigma of DEPRESSION, what if that's what they're feeling? Perhaps, but most of the time there are simple Life Skills missing in these instances and with a few simple evidence-based tools in hand there can be major change. A person can see themselves having more success in communication in general, but specifically in negotiating what they need at their jobs to make it worthwhile for them to be there. They can see themselves suddenly not paralyzed when major things don't go as planned because they know how to talk themselves through it, who to reach out to for help, and how to take care of themselves until they feel better enough to make decisions from a healthier emotional/mental state. They are able to put into play a few regular practices that support self connection and develop emotional intelligence allowing them to think on their feet, experience and identify emotion in the moment and not have to act on it, see and articulate choice and so many other emotional intelligence capacities. If you are experiencing difficulty in personal relationships, finding it hard to function at work or in the rest of your life, experiencing either a confused, dissociated state or an extreme loss of motivation, struggles with self-esteem, a chronic self criticism, not acknowledging your successes or thinking you have none? You can stop feeling badly that you struggle with these things. They are often part of a set of behavioral symptoms that has points to a lack of Life Skills, one of those repurposed words, which means several things: *you aren't alone *you are ok *you can feel better because there is help, support, and these skills can be learned There's no reason to struggle alone with this any longer. "Every human being is a unique individual. Psychotherapeutic success depends ultimately not on theory, and not on a stereotyped technique, but on the individual therapist's ability to understand intuitively and accurately this particular patient." Harry Guntrip "The will to be oneself is heroism." Ortega y Gasset A deeper knowledge of yourself changes who you are. For almost 40 years Richard Bloom, with compassion and keen understanding, has helped individuals deal with depression, anxiety, grief, anger, and recovery from addictions and couples deal with conflict and change. He is aware of the profound injuries of childhood abuse and neglect and helps people to reclaim their wholeness, the unique selves that they were forced to mask or abandon in order to survive in the difficult emotional environments of their families.

Are You Feeling Stuck? Anxious? Depressed?
Therapy for Individuals, Couples & Families
The saying "An examined life is not worth living" always comes to mind when I encounter an individual who is mired down in problems and unable to find happiness. That you are visiting this page tells me you have already embarked on a path to address the issues that are stopping you from moving forward. In a warm and safe environment I can provide you with the tools you need to indeed live the life you wish to live. Together we can explore and uncover the obstacles that prevent you from enjoying the relationships you deserve along with the dreams and goals you want to pursue. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY While I use many different approaches in therapy, including talk therapy, I work through an attachment lens which means that sometimes it is important to explore one's past to see how it affects you in the present. I believe everyone benefits from finding new options to address previously self-defeating patterns. I also like to incorporate mindfulness practices into my therapeutic work. My clients have observed that their overall functioning has dramatically improved by practicing mindfulness in their daily lives. COUPLES When two individuals come together I am often reminded of the expression, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." Relationships require nurturing and attention and sometimes with the best of intentions, couples drift apart or arrive at an impasse. I am marriage friendly, LGBTQ friendly, and believe that most couples have the ability to work out their dissatisfaction with one another. Much of the time, with commitment and a desire to rekindle long-lost feelings, couples, with the help of therapy, can master the communications skills they need to find emotional safety and connection in their relationship.

Shining a Compassionate Light on Patterns and Possibilities.
Part Therapist & Part Coach: 3 Steps to Relationship Change!
Are you experiencing some of the following challenges: difficulty with boundaries, asserting yourself, low confidence & self esteem? Having trouble figuring out how to hold onto yourself in a relationship? Negotiate conflict within it? Find yourself saying "I (or we!) deserve better" ... Life can sometimes be painful (especially relationships!), and things can feel tough. However, life’s pain can often be the necessary CATALYST for positive growth and empowerment! In my experience, growth requires delving into three distinct areas: PATTERNS Learning what you do, and why you do it. PROCESS Accepting and working through emotions. PRACTICE Applying insight to new behaviors and action. What I offer is unique: part therapist, and part coach. I am passionate about empowering clients through the challenges of life and relationships. You are the expert! I am a fellow traveller that brings knowledge and compassion to help guide your path of self-discovery, healing, intimacy and change. Many people encounter challenges in holding on to themselves in the relationships in their lives, and figuring out how to navigate communication, compromise, and conflict. Much of this stems from what we learned in the families we grew up in, which often bumps up against what our significant others have learned in their families. Our work together will shine a compassionate light on past family patterns, as well as current patterns, so that you are empowered with a choice: keep those patterns …or create new, more effective patterns.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Unknown. “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” Anonymous Hi. I understand that when you're hurting, you need understanding and sensitivity. You might be struggling with a difficult psychological disorder or just need help untangling the complex web of life. Perhaps you are struggling with a difficult relationship, need to overcome a serious trauma, or want to surmount a weight or smoking problem through hypnosis. I am also certified to perform past life regression, which might afford you self enrichment or provide the key to understanding aspects of thoughts and feelings you have today. Therapy is not a “one size fits all” discipline and fitting treatment to my individual client's personality and needs is a hallmark of my practice. I am skilled in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing,), Hypnosis, Past Life Regression, Relationship Counseling, or regular talk therapy, and will apply whichever technique or techniques in our sessions that promise the greatest benefit to you. The following are some of the issues I work with: Depression, relationship issues, anxiety, chronic pain, divorce, gay/lesbian issues, grief, OCD, spirituality, trauma, dissociation, family and sexual problems. This is not an exhaustive list and I encourage you to write or call to discuss whatever has brought you to consider using my services.
