Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. "Happiness Is the Meaning and Purpose
of Existence." - Aristotle
Dr. Colleen practices from a positive psychology approach- meaning that instead of requiring you to undergo 20 years of therapy talking about what went wrong, sessions are short-term, solution-focused, and focused on what's going right. Dr. Long believes that while insight is important in treatment, some times the solution lies in what the individual can implement in their present life, to better influence their future. Dr. Colleen's initial intake focuses on the areas of the individual's life that need fine-tuning, and then helping the client understand what unique strengths they have to tackle those areas. Through her unique model, she utilizes the principles from her research, to help YOU achieve your optimal level of contentment and bliss. Dr. Colleen is a very action-oriented therapist, meaning that most sessions end by giving the client an assignment for next week. She believes that genuine progress lies in the work of the client and not the therapist. However, happiness and the happiness of her clients is her true passion, and as such- she maintains a weekly blog titled The Happiness Rx.

Individual, Couple, and Family Psychotherapy
From childhood to adulthood to older years, we face challenges that are mostly relational and/or emotional. If you don't have the right tools to deal with these challenges, they become roadblocks in relationships with yourself as well as significant people in your life-i.e. your partner, children, parents, siblings, and friends. To improve the quality of your life and relationships, to explore your purpose and direction in life, I can guide you on a path to self-fulfillment. You will develop an awareness of the past, learn to live healthier in the present by better managing yourself and your relationships, and focus on planning a more hopeful journey to the future. I work with individuals, couples, and parents. My specialties are relationship issues, mood disorders, and addiction. If you feel depressed/ anxious, have relationship problems, or not sure about the direction in your life, then don’t wait to make an appointment with me. I believe in a holistic attitude to mind's wellness and relationships. To achieve this I use different theoretical frameworks from an existential approach to life's problems, to exploring unhealthy behaviors/thoughts, to accepting the "self", and to making changes that can lead to a more fulfilling life.

Make Life Happen!
I believe healing takes place on the levels of emotional, mental, physical and spiritual. I work from a more holistic approach to change behaviors of negative thinking, while at the same time working through deep feelings of emotional pain to help make changes in one's soul and physical body pain. I am here to help clients work through their problems so that they can have better lives and better relationships with others. I have worked with clients who have addictions, anxiety and depression. I have worked with clients who have gone through domestic violence and other violent crimes against them. I specialize in working with children who have been abused and neglected by their parents or someone that they have trusted in their lives. I believe psychotherapy can help everyone, but it sometimes is a long and difficult journey that requires commitment, time and patience. I accept low fees and work on a sliding scale to adjust to one's financial situation. If you are serious about making changes in your life, then I am here to help you walk through your journey to get to the other side of healing.

In my practice the emotional healing power of empathetic understanding and relationship building meet the latest neuro scientific technology. Computerized EEG neuro feedback, advanced EMDR protocols, and hypnosis are utilized in the context of years of experience in Cognitive Behavioral and body oriented psychotherapy. Working with the mind — thinking, communicating, relating, feeling — can effect the brain in positive ways. And conversely, working with the brain — neural rhythms, connectivity and brain wave synchrony — can effect the way we think and feel. Where we start is up to you. Let’s explore the possibilities together. Call or email for a complementary telephone consultation.

I practice Affect Regulation Therapy which is effective for anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, etc. My special niche is Addiction; i do prevention, intervention, and maintenance. The most successful forms of therapy are those that stress the relationship between the therapist and client. As a scholar of brain development (under the tutelage of Dr. Allan Schore), I have learned that an attuned relationship between therapist and client can actually change the brain; that is, it can create more connections between the synapses, thus improving the mental health of the individual. I do both long-term and short-term psychotherapy and I get spectacular results~~

"Knowing Yourself Is the Beginning of All Wisdom"- Aristotle
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #80907 specializing in providing psychotherapy, counseling, and mental health services for adolescents, teens, individuals, couples, and families. I provide services at my private-practice offices in both Torrance and Long Beach. I have over 10 years of experience working in the social service and mental health fields with a wide variety of issues, populations, and cultures. I have presented clinical and academic work both locally and internationaly, have taught psychology and philosophy at various colleges, and am currently teaching psychology at Long Beach City College. Taking that first step toward getting help or seeking a greater knowledge of Self can be the hardest part and I understand that. I have faced many obstacles in my journey through life, and am grateful to now be in a position to help others. I focus on providing a safe environment in order to help you speak freely, share your story, ask difficult questions, and face challenging issues in a confidential exchange. In beginning this inquiry, today you are one step closer to finding answers. Sometimes circumstances befall us in our journey through life that can leave us feeling lost or confused with various questions. These are some of the ways in which those questions surface: Is something holding you back in life? Is something getting you down that you feel you can’t share with anyone? Do you question why you made certain choices in life? Are you struggling in your relationships? Are you at a crossroads in life? Do you question the meaning of life? Do you crave a better knowledge of Self? Does your past have too much influence and control on your present? Are you seeking personal and relational development? Do you want to attain a new way of seeing your self so you can create a new way of being? If you have questions like these or similar ones, therapy and counseling may be able to help. In begining this search and inquiry for yourself, today you are one step closer to expressing yourself and answering questions so that you can feel a stronger sense of Self-empowerment on a positive path to growth and well-being. As a depth psychotherapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating and affirming everyday. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand how they effect you in the present in order to resolve challenges in your life and create a new way of being. By utilizing a variety of therapy approaches and techniques chosen to both suit who you are a person and address the issues you bring forth, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. I have also studied philosophy at the University of Liverpool in England, and am open to discussing any of life's difficult questions, spirituality issues, and existential themes that may be running through your mind. If you're looking for extra support and guidance through a challenging situation or you're just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals. Therapy Can Help!
I work with individuals, couples, adolescents and groups in my practice, providing psychotherapy and counseling. The counseling I provide is down-to-earth, and collaborative. Your therapy has to feel like a good fit, so I use my curiosity, and training to incorporate the right kind of approach for you. In therapy, we look at the past and how it affects your present day choices and patterns. We look at ways in which you may be frustrated or stuck and learn new tools that can help you grow and reach your goals. My interests and focus include: depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, chronic pain, addictions, eating disorders and adolescents. I also like to work with people struggling with life transitions and both women's and men's issues. I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and work specifically with trauma, PTSD and the body. I will be offering an Eating Disorder/Body Image Group as well as a Co-Ed Process Therapy Group in my practice. I supervise an MFT Intern that can provide sliding scale psychotherapy in my practice.

LIFE CHANGING PSYCHOTHERAPY
Different people respond to different methods of healing. For that reason I am trained in a number of different healing modalities such as: Humanistic Psychology— This approach provides you with a safe, unconditionally accepting experience in the therapeutic relationship. In this way we work to remove any toxic shame you may be carrying from the past. This can be particularly helpful if you come from a difficult family upbringing. Many of our issues we carry are a result of negative relationship patterns from the past. Humanistic psychology does reparative work by making the therapeutic relationship as accepting, non-judgmental, and healing as possible. Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Inner Child Work— These tools teach you how to relate to yourself in a loving, present time, productive manner. Most of us suffer from a strong “inner critic.” With the skills of Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Inner Child work, you will learn to alleviate suffering generated by the self-critic and move forward. Cognitive Behavioral Work— The most commonly used type of therapy, CBT is effective for helping you move out of stagnation and into accountable action when working on achieving specific goals. Goals are set and tracked within the therapy so you are not alone in them. It is sometimes not enough to gain insight and do emotional healing in therapy, we often need to work toward concrete behavioral changes. CBT lets us do just that. Emotional Freedom Technique-- Also referred to as “tapping”, this healing modality is used specifically to reduce cortisol levels in your blood stream which will in turn ease depression and anxiety. Cortisol is the hormone released by the brain’s amygdala gland when under stress— sometimes resulting in paralyzing fears. Once cortisol levels reduce, you will often feel able to handle whatever is challenging you in a more direct, effective manner. How do you work in couples counseling? As well as being a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I am also a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist. If you are currently experiencing issues in your romantic relationship, it is important to find a therapist who has specific couples training to help you. Imago relationship therapy is one of the most renowned therapies in treating couples. Imago therapy is based on learning effective “mirroring” communication skills, being able to hold each person’s experience in equal esteem, and making decisions in a cooperative / safe way. In the process we heal the “unfinished business of childhood” (i.e. past hurts or issues) that we transfer over from our family of origin to our adult romantic partners. As a result of this kind of healing we gain greater maturity, intimacy, and fulfillment in relationships. See the Imago Couples Therapy section of this site for more. What about life coaching? I am also a Certified Strategic Intervention Life Coach. Tony Robbins and Cloe Madanes developed this form of life coaching. The coaching is based off Mr. Robbins’ research and seminars as well as Ms. Madanes’ experience as a psychotherapist and author. Together they coined the theory of “Human Needs Psychology”. This theory states that all of our behaviors and beliefs are driven by six basic needs. When these needs are made conscious we are better equipped at fulfilling them in ways that provide optimal growth and happiness. Life coaching might best be thought of as a form of unique behavioral therapy. That is, when you stop ruminating on the reasons things are not working out, and start changing your behavior to act in accord with what you say you want, your goals can be achieved. I also run men's groups. Please inquire for more info. If you're ready to take a step toward change, contact me. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to see if this might be a good fit for you.

I believe in our capacity to create change
If you are struggling with painful feelings of depression or anxiety; if you are feeling stuck, empty and hopeless; if drinking, getting high or hooking up is becoming a problem, psychotherapy can help you. You can heal from feelings of shame, grief, childhood traumas, addictions and painful feelings. Psychotherapy can help you to begin building more fulfilling relationships, gain a greater ability to be intimate and become the person you want to be. Through my own personal experience and in my work  with others I have come to firmly believe that change is possible through psychotherapy. * You can feel better about yourself * Have more fulfilling relationships * Stop abusing drugs and alcohol * Find relief from depression and anxiety * Reach your potential and find your true self

Give Yourself the Day You Want to Have!
I have been in practice for over 15 years, and have found that rather than waking up each day and approaching the day as the one we believe we are supposed to have, I help clients reach for the kind of day they want to have. I work with individuals, couples, children and families, and engage with them in the dynamic that they bring in. Once we define the parts of that dynamic that is not functioning at an optimal level for them, we acknowledge it, address it, process why it exists and then attempt to reconfigure it so that all parties are closer to their desired experience. Rather than approach a therapeutic situation from one particular perspective, I use an ecclectic array of modalities so that I may reach each client in a way that meets their needs. I work Mondays through Fridays, from 8 am til 7 pm. My office is conveniently located in Beverly Hills, with easy parking.

Life is a journey, and in seeking therapy you are taking a step to shape that journey. Choosing a therapist can be difficult, complicated by therapy jargon. However, I will provide a safe environment and a non-judgemental ear for you to explore your life and its infinite possibilities. You will determine where you want to go and I will work with you to help you get there. I look forward to hearing from you. My approach is Eclectic combining Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral and Solution-Focused therapeutic interventions. To put it simply, we will examine your past, evaluate your present and take steps towards your desired future. I am an active, collaborator who will work with you to achieve your goals. I am open, honest and caring and will provide a safe place for you to continue your journey of self-discovery. I believe in accenting and utilizing your strengths so that you incorporate them into your daily life. I will support you and challenge you. Clients come to me with a variety of needs that are best met through exploring and developing relevant insights and life skills, releasing painful emotions and memories, or tapping into their own deeper selves. Clients, from a wide variety of backgrounds are seen in individual, family or group counseling sessions based on their needs and preferences. Many clients have already been in therapy and come to me because they still have things to work on that they have been unsuccessful at achieving through traditional talk therapy. How people benefit from therapy depends on the reasons why they initially seek therapy. However, generally, a person can expect to know him/herself better, feel more confident and have more a greater sense of appreciation and self-acceptance. At the end of therapy, a client can expect to feel positive emotions and emotional freedom more often. In addition, a person will develop more stability, self-knowledge, and control over emotions such as sadness, anxiety, anger, grief, and worry. He/she is likely to be better able to achieve personal and relational goals; to problem solve difficult situations; to feel more satisfied with his\her life and relationships; to be less influenced by past traumas and/or struggles; to know his/her opinions and voice them; and to grow during life transitions and challenges. Children and adolescents will also behave in more age appropriate and adaptive ways, feel more confident about themselves and their relationships, have more positive emotions, manage difficult emotions more adaptively, communicate effectively, and be able to achieve their goals.

I love working with clients who feel like their hope is gone. By examining the root of their problems I work with them to create deep and lasting change. I don't believe that the problems of the human heart are solved by quick fixes and simple platitudes. They often require a wise and compassionate guide into a deeper journey that can't be done alone.

There are many reasons why individuals seek therapy. Sometimes it is to deal with psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, addiction or concerns about body image. Other times it is in response to situational stress such as a relationship, break up, carrer change, or life transition. Therapy can even be about personal growth and exploration. As a therapist, I work to provide insight, support, coping skills, and strategies to help with life’s many challenges so that individuals can ultimately grow and learn from their experiences.

Be Mindful Now
Each individual or couple is unique. For this reason my approach is eclectic and combines a family of origin approach with a humanism/existentialism. More importantly I like to investigate patterns that are repeated in our lives and how we can locate the payoffs for those patterns. In my opinion psychotherapy is a way to build trust with another individual, explore the reasons we have for our actions and discover whether these actions match the life we are living now. Once the client and I have a strong therapeutic alliance, we can find a way for the client to make positive changes while feeling supported. In addition I am certified in EMDR and use Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression.
