Exploring Challenges & Strengths Through Lived Experiences
I love to help others explore challenges and strengths through the lens of their lived experiences. My goal is to create a space that fosters healing and growth without asking anyone to compromise who they are. As a Black therapist, I understand how culture, identity, and systemic factors shape the way we move through the world—and how those experiences show up in our mental health. I center my work on authenticity, compassion, and cultural humility, offering a therapeutic relationship where you can show up fully, without judgment. Whether you're navigating anxiety, grief, relationship challenges, or the complexities of being bicultural or underrepresented, I’m here to support you in reclaiming your voice and honoring your truth.

Thomas Glennon, PhD
Mental Health Counselor/Therapist
Studio City, CA 91604
I have been practicing as a licensed psychotherapist since 1983. I work with children, adolescents, adults, and couples. I provide an understanding, caring, and empathic environment to help you gain a better understanding of yourself and your circumstances. I utilize traditional “talk therapy,” which focuses on clarifying the nature of the problems. I help you to understand how your life-history contributes to your current situation, and to recognize and utilize your strengths in order to change negative patterns of thinking, behaving, and communicating. Therapy provides a confidential and supportive setting for you to express and alleviate painful feelings and to explore actions to improve your life. When working with children and adolescents I encourage self-expression, communication, and problem solving. I utilize play therapy with young children to help them express and understand their feelings and conflicts. An important goal of therapy with children and adolescents is to reduce both internal and external conflicts so that healthy emotional and relational development is not compromised. Working with couples, I focus on improving communication and resolving conflicts through cooperation, understanding, and acceptance of each other. In my experience, the problems couples present in therapy often provide an opportunity for self-growth in each partner.

All of us hit roadblocks in our lives. Often the chaos of life presents a situation or event that causes stress and anxiety. You may not know how to think about the problem let alone what to do about it. In addition, feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, or unmotivated, does not require an event to provoke pain. I'm talking about a need to be heard, listened to, …… understood. If you’re depressed or anxious, always angry or simply feeling unmotivated, we can work toward putting that puzzle inside you together. What we are seeking is change. Something that we can measure that helps you make more effective choices, or reduces your stress, or alters patterns in your behavior that have gotten in your way or simply helps you understand yourself and your life in a less complicated way. In addition to indvidual therapy, I work with many couples who have hit crossroads in their relationships and we try to find that common demominator of communication, that point where each partner will choose to listen to the other. Not an easy task, I relish the struggle and invite couples willing to take the leap.

When life gives you lemons ... what do you do? Whether you believe we choose our own circumstances, that there is a master plan, or that sometimes sh*t happens, you still have reactions, feelings, and decisions to make about "what next?" It is NOT YOUR FAULT you have problems stemming from your past, and it IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to create your future. If you knew HOW to do that, you would probably not be looking for a therapist! I will help you design a positive life, REGARDLESS OF YOUR HISTORY. I trust and respect your ability to make good choices and decisions, when you are able to pay attention to your inner voice, your sense of who you are at the core. I will help you discover, re-discover, or create your true self, so that problems in your life become opportunities for growth. I sometimes conduct sessions that are not framed by the clock, working with individuals or couples until a natural stopping point. This flexible scheduling allows for resolution and re-direction in a more time-friendly manner. I help couples learn to value and appreciate the differences that have been driving them apart, and to regain the loving feelings that brought them together. I help those with a medical condition deal with the anger, depression, frustration, and other feelings that are associated with illness, and I also provide a safe place for their family members or significant others to deal with their own feelings and concerns. My office has a calming, Zen atmosphere, a soothing and pleasant environment. I am no longer on any insurance panels. If you wish, I provide statements for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement of a percentage of fees.

I offer an integrative track to psychotherapy that combines insight oriented therapies with a solution focused approach to help individuals and couples make more effective choices and transition through challenging moments in their lives. I work with individuals on issues of self-esteem, life and career transitions, anxiety, depression, stress management, and women's issues. I help couples, who feel they are stuck in a relationship that has lost it's emotional connection, to identify the patterns of behavior that led them to loose their bond. I work from an emotionally focused approach known as Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT), helping couples identify disruptive patterns that include, blaming , criticizing, defensiveness, expressions of contempt, and emotional or physical distancing. I work to increase a couple's understanding of each other's emotions, building trust and a secure base from which they can reach out to one another. Partners learn to recognize the negative cycle they are stuck in, identify what keeps them in that cycle, and rebuild the safety and trust necessary to have a deep connection and satisfying relationship.

Do you feel that your life is out of control? Do you feel misunderstood? Are you worried about the way your child or teenager is behaving? Do you wish things could be different? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, then you’re not alone. Many of us experience ups and downs, and perhaps you’re experiencing more downs than ups. So how do you change that? Sometimes all it takes is one or two changes to get your life moving in a more positive direction. Together, we can figure out the changes that you can comfortably make to achieve a more fulfilling relationship, or to have a better understanding of your child or teenager, so that you will experience a sense of calm and happiness in your everyday life. I can also meet with your child or teen, individually or in a group setting and help them with issues such as: anger management, bullying, depression, socialization skills, and drugs & alcohol abuse. In addition to traditional talk therapy, I have created a therapy system called OM Rhythm Therapy, using hand drums and small percussion instruments, which I use with children and adults. I also play the didgeridoo, an Australian Aborigine instrument which is one of the oldest instruments known. The didgeridoo induces a meditative state, as well as a form of vibrational healing.

Be Mindful Now
Each individual or couple is unique. For this reason my approach is eclectic and combines a family of origin approach with a humanism/existentialism. More importantly I like to investigate patterns that are repeated in our lives and how we can locate the payoffs for those patterns. In my opinion psychotherapy is a way to build trust with another individual, explore the reasons we have for our actions and discover whether these actions match the life we are living now. Once the client and I have a strong therapeutic alliance, we can find a way for the client to make positive changes while feeling supported. In addition I am certified in EMDR and use Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression.

I work with individuals, couples, adolescents and groups in my practice, providing psychotherapy and counseling. The counseling I provide is down-to-earth, and collaborative. Your therapy has to feel like a good fit, so I use my curiosity, and training to incorporate the right kind of approach for you. We look at ways in which you may be frustrated or stuck and learn new tools that can help you grow and reach your goals. My interests and focus include: depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, chronic pain, addictions, eating disorders and adolescents. I also like to work with people struggling with life transitions and both women's and men's issues. I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and work specifically with trauma, PTSD and the body. I will be offering an Eating Disorder/Body Image Group as well as a Co-Ed Process Therapy Group in my practice. I supervise an MFT Intern that can provide sliding scale psychotherapy in my practice.

We All Need Help Sometimes
I'm here to help you feel better, do better, and get better
Whether you're experiencing depression, anxiety, or stress, or if you have problems at work or at home, my sole aim is to help you make the changes you desire. Likewise, if you're in a relationship and you're not getting along, suffering from a betrayal, or simply having trouble finding a partner, I can help you to understand what's going on and overcome your relationship challenges. I take a two-prong approach. 1) To help you find out "how did I get here?" so you don't have to re-visit this place again. 2) To help you learn new ways of relating, coping, and expressing yourself that foster good relationships, friendships, and work connections. If people have been telling you that you need to get over it or to move on, or if you think so yourself, all that does is add pressure to an already difficult experience. I take an "addition" approach - learning new tools and thinking about things in new ways - rather than a "getting rid of" approach (which doesn't work anyway!) Thoughts like - What's wrong with me? Why can't I be like other people - doesn't mean that something is ACTUALLY wrong with you! It could be that you're doing your best to cope with certain challenges, some of which may have arisen in your past. For example, if you were betrayed in a prior relationship and you don't trust your current partner, you're using a former coping strategy in a new situation. I would help you find new ways to deal with the lack of trust and other feelings that could be causing you to act in ways that may have hurt your partner and the relationship. As another example, let's say that there was a lot of fighting in your family and you closed yourself off in your room. Now, any time there's the potential for conflict you withdraw. You're protecting yourself from either being hurt or hurting the other person. But this relationship might be different from your past ones (including your family), and withdrawing could actually be harmful. With either example, one goal for therapy would be find new ways to cope with these feelings, as well as to understand that nothing is "wrong" with you. It's just that your actions may be counter-productive. The other goal is Empowerment; sometimes you may choose to withdraw or be untrusting - but the key is to choose and not automatically react that way. Another way I see therapy is putting puzzle pieces together. You may have all of the pieces, but we need to put them together to figure out what motivates you and why you feel the way you do - as well as making the changes you desire.

I believe in our capacity to create change
If you are struggling with painful feelings of depression or anxiety; if you are feeling stuck, empty and hopeless; if drinking, getting high or hooking up is becoming a problem, psychotherapy can help you. You can heal from feelings of shame, grief, childhood traumas, addictions and painful feelings. Psychotherapy can help you to begin building more fulfilling relationships, gain a greater ability to be intimate and become the person you want to be. Through my own personal experience and in my work  with others I have come to firmly believe that change is possible through psychotherapy. * You can feel better about yourself * Have more fulfilling relationships * Stop abusing drugs and alcohol * Find relief from depression and anxiety * Reach your potential and find your true self

LIFE CHANGING PSYCHOTHERAPY
Different people respond to different methods of healing. For that reason I am trained in a number of different healing modalities such as: Humanistic Psychology— This approach provides you with a safe, unconditionally accepting experience in the therapeutic relationship. In this way we work to remove any toxic shame you may be carrying from the past. This can be particularly helpful if you come from a difficult family upbringing. Many of our issues we carry are a result of negative relationship patterns from the past. Humanistic psychology does reparative work by making the therapeutic relationship as accepting, non-judgmental, and healing as possible. Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Inner Child Work— These tools teach you how to relate to yourself in a loving, present time, productive manner. Most of us suffer from a strong “inner critic.” With the skills of Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Inner Child work, you will learn to alleviate suffering generated by the self-critic and move forward. Cognitive Behavioral Work— The most commonly used type of therapy, CBT is effective for helping you move out of stagnation and into accountable action when working on achieving specific goals. Goals are set and tracked within the therapy so you are not alone in them. It is sometimes not enough to gain insight and do emotional healing in therapy, we often need to work toward concrete behavioral changes. CBT lets us do just that. Emotional Freedom Technique-- Also referred to as “tapping”, this healing modality is used specifically to reduce cortisol levels in your blood stream which will in turn ease depression and anxiety. Cortisol is the hormone released by the brain’s amygdala gland when under stress— sometimes resulting in paralyzing fears. Once cortisol levels reduce, you will often feel able to handle whatever is challenging you in a more direct, effective manner. How do you work in couples counseling? As well as being a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I am also a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist. If you are currently experiencing issues in your romantic relationship, it is important to find a therapist who has specific couples training to help you. Imago relationship therapy is one of the most renowned therapies in treating couples. Imago therapy is based on learning effective “mirroring” communication skills, being able to hold each person’s experience in equal esteem, and making decisions in a cooperative / safe way. In the process we heal the “unfinished business of childhood” (i.e. past hurts or issues) that we transfer over from our family of origin to our adult romantic partners. As a result of this kind of healing we gain greater maturity, intimacy, and fulfillment in relationships. See the Imago Couples Therapy section of this site for more. What about life coaching? I am also a Certified Strategic Intervention Life Coach. Tony Robbins and Cloe Madanes developed this form of life coaching. The coaching is based off Mr. Robbins’ research and seminars as well as Ms. Madanes’ experience as a psychotherapist and author. Together they coined the theory of “Human Needs Psychology”. This theory states that all of our behaviors and beliefs are driven by six basic needs. When these needs are made conscious we are better equipped at fulfilling them in ways that provide optimal growth and happiness. Life coaching might best be thought of as a form of unique behavioral therapy. That is, when you stop ruminating on the reasons things are not working out, and start changing your behavior to act in accord with what you say you want, your goals can be achieved. I also run men's groups. Please inquire for more info. If you're ready to take a step toward change, contact me. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to see if this might be a good fit for you.
