Are You Feeling Down and Can't Stop Crying? Is Your
Relationship Off Track? I Can Help You Live Better!
How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. If I will feel that I may not be the right fit, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who specialize in the issue you are seeking a solution for (i.e., pain management). We will also discuss fees. In our first session I will go over the inform consent and office policies with you and will collect data for the intake. I will become very involved with you and we will work as a team. I will ask you what your goals are and after a couple of sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will be in a very safe and supportive environment. I will learn to know who you are and what your personality is and I will adapt the therapeutic process to meet your individual needs. We will discuss your progress as we go along and make changes if the need arises. We will also discuss those changes to ensure that we are on the right direction in your path for personal growth.

Online Psychotherapy
I offer an alternative to traditional in-office therapy through secure, HIPAA compliant video sessions on doxy.me. My practice is rooted in accessibility, compassion, and integration, making therapy available to anyone seeking growth, healing, or clarity no matter where they are. I work with adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions, and the complex emotional patterns that shape our lives. As an Integrative Therapist, I draw from a variety of theoretical approaches including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, mindfulness-based, and humanistic frameworks. This allows me to tailor each session to the unique personality, needs, and goals of the individual. Rather than adhering to a single model, I help clients uncover what truly works for them, whether it’s developing insight into the past, learning new coping skills, or cultivating emotional regulation in the present moment. My approach emphasizes authenticity and collaboration. I believe that therapy should be a safe and supportive partnership where you can explore your story without judgment. Many clients come to therapy feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or uncertain about how to move forward. Together, we work to transform those feelings into understanding and action. You will find that our sessions balance structure with flexibility, allowing space for both emotional depth and practical problem solving. Online therapy offers the utmost convenience, privacy, and comfort. Sessions can be scheduled at times that fit your lifestyle, removing the obstacles of travel, traffic, and scheduling conflicts. Many clients appreciate the ability to connect from their own home or private space, where they often feel more relaxed and open to self-reflection. For individuals who are apprehensive about visiting a therapist’s office, telehealth creates a sense of safety and ease that encourages engagement and progress. Confidentiality is central to my practice. doxy.me is fully encrypted, secure, and compliant with all federal privacy standards. You can trust that your personal information and session content remain completely private. Therapy is an investment in your well-being and your future. Whether you are seeking relief from stress or anxiety, working through depression or trauma, improving your relationships, or simply striving for greater emotional balance, I provide a compassionate and nonjudgmental space where real change can occur. My goal is to help you develop resilience, insight, and tools that will continue to support you long after therapy ends. If you are ready to begin, reach out to schedule a session. Together, we can create a path toward healing, growth, and lasting change.

Compassionate Care with Options for Treatment
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Unknown. “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” Anonymous Hi. I understand that when you're hurting, you need understanding and sensitivity. You might be struggling with a difficult psychological disorder or just need help untangling the complex web of life. Perhaps you are struggling with a difficult relationship, need to overcome a serious trauma, or want to surmount a weight or smoking problem through hypnosis. I am also certified to perform past life regression, which might afford you self enrichment or provide the key to understanding aspects of thoughts and feelings you have today. Therapy is not a “one size fits all” discipline and fitting treatment to my individual client's personality and needs is a hallmark of my practice. I am skilled in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing,), Hypnosis, Past Life Regression, Relationship Counseling, or regular talk therapy, and will apply whichever technique or techniques in our sessions that promise the greatest benefit to you. The following are some of the issues I work with: Depression, relationship issues, anxiety, chronic pain, divorce, gay/lesbian issues, grief, OCD, spirituality, trauma, dissociation, family and sexual problems. This is not an exhaustive list and I encourage you to write or call to discuss whatever has brought you to consider using my services.

Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

NYC AFFIRMATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY LCSW PLLC is a community focused sustainable sliding scale mental health practice in Manhattan providing treatment to individual adults ages 18+. Our mission is simple: provide affirmative psychotherapy in a sustainable way to the community. By affirmative we mean that we do not view individuals from the perspective of being defective or needing to be fixed. We instead recognize the innate strengths that continue to allow people to function while enduring difficult life circumstances. Challenging childhoods and distressing adult experiences, coupled with the toxic impact of systemic oppression, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and xenophobia impact our mental health. Our goal is to fill a gap in mental health services provided to those that are historically marginalized and disenfranchised; we are especially committed to serving queer communities of color. We also strive to be culturally aware and trauma-informed. And, most importantly, we’re here to help you feel better and make change. We firmly believe that change is possible and that we as human beings grow in relationships where an empathic and attuned other bears witness to our struggles. You are not alone. Lets take the next step together.

Stuck In Patterns That No Longer Serve You Well?
Why Aren't Things Working Out Like You Thought They Would?
If you can’t seem to make things work for you, and you want to talk to someone about how to change that, I can help. My job is to provide you with insight into how you get in your way of getting the things you want in life, so you can make changes that will serve you better than the same old same old way of doing things that keeps you stuck in patterns with undesirable outcomes. No doubt about it, change is hard. You’ve been who you are for a long time, and are used to navigating our difficult world in a particular way. The problem is, it just isn’t working. So it’s not surprising that you’re confused, conflicted, anxious or depressed. I have a flexible approach to working with people, since one size does not fit all. My twelve years of training and over a quarter century’s worth of experience working with people has paid off. I’ve learned to listen in a non-judgmental way, and to help you feel safe in revealing your fears, feelings and thoughts, all in your own time, at your own pace. There may be things you want to change about yourself, and other things you want to keep. You get to make all the decisions about who you are and want to be. I’m here to point out what might work better for you, but not to tell you what to do. There’s no magic that can turn things around instantly, but if you’re committed to the process you can make significant strides in a reasonable period of time. I invite you to come in for a no-obligation consultation to see if you feel comfortable talking with me about what in your life is not how you want it to be. If you choose not to continue with me, there's no charge for the consultation.

Are You Feeling Stuck? Anxious? Depressed?
Therapy for Individuals, Couples & Families
The saying "An examined life is not worth living" always comes to mind when I encounter an individual who is mired down in problems and unable to find happiness. That you are visiting this page tells me you have already embarked on a path to address the issues that are stopping you from moving forward. In a warm and safe environment I can provide you with the tools you need to indeed live the life you wish to live. Together we can explore and uncover the obstacles that prevent you from enjoying the relationships you deserve along with the dreams and goals you want to pursue. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY While I use many different approaches in therapy, including talk therapy, I work through an attachment lens which means that sometimes it is important to explore one's past to see how it affects you in the present. I believe everyone benefits from finding new options to address previously self-defeating patterns. I also like to incorporate mindfulness practices into my therapeutic work. My clients have observed that their overall functioning has dramatically improved by practicing mindfulness in their daily lives. COUPLES When two individuals come together I am often reminded of the expression, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." Relationships require nurturing and attention and sometimes with the best of intentions, couples drift apart or arrive at an impasse. I am marriage friendly, LGBTQ friendly, and believe that most couples have the ability to work out their dissatisfaction with one another. Much of the time, with commitment and a desire to rekindle long-lost feelings, couples, with the help of therapy, can master the communications skills they need to find emotional safety and connection in their relationship.

Let me help you make peace with food and feel good about yourself. I provide individual and group therapy in a warm, caring and supportive environment. In addition to her clinical practice specializing in eating disorders, she writes an award-winning blog, Make Peace With Food, she hosts a call-in radio program, The Dr. Nina Show, which airs Wednesdays at 10am PST on LA Talk Radio. I believe in skills, not disorders.
Hi there, I'm Dr. Hickman. Do you have goals and dreams that you keep failing to reach despite being highly motivated? Do you feel like something keeps standing in your way and you can't figure out your next steps whether for projects at work, home, school, your creative aspirations or finally launching that business? Then you've landed on the right page. I work with highly motivated men and women who are tired of their excuses and ready to do whatever it takes to learn the skills they need for massive success across all areas of their lives. As you learn invaluable mental fitness skills, you'll uncover your best self, discover how to recruit your emotions as powerful allies, shift perspectives to open doors you previously thought impossible, and finally build the life you've longed for. I believe you can do it and I'm here to help. It doesn't matter what negative emotions you're having (e.g., anxiety, fear, anger, sadness), what negative habits you're enacting (e.g., avoidance, drowning emotions with food or substances, lashing out in anger, overworking), or what has happened in your past. We can use it all as clues to underlying needs that are driving those emotions and habits. Once discovered, I'll help you make the shift to answering these needs in healthy, productive ways for powerful results. Then, we'll collaborate on setting goals and working toward them for your amazing future. You've got this. Better yet, we've got this together! Contact me to make an appointment.

Empower Yourself. Free Your Spirit.
Seeking counseling can be a difficult first step. It can be difficult for us to acknowledge our pain, and often we feel guilty about it. Feelings are not good or bad, they just are—the consequences of those feelings are what we can influence. Counseling is important because it can provide a safe place to speak the truth about what we are going through. Our truth is powerful and can be a motivator for making changes to how we feel and what we do. Counseling can help us identify our values, goals, and beliefs and to harness them to help us heal. Only you know what hurts, what brings you joy, and what changes you want to make. I can collaborate with you as you connect with your truth. I believe that knowing our truth liberates and empowers us. Change is a journey and it is often hard to make alone. I would be honored to accompany you for this part of your journey. I work with clients who are struggling with substance abuse, addiction, anxiety, depression, and anger. I also work with clients who have criminal charges and criminal convictions, usually related to drugs or alcohol. I have special training in working with clients who have diverse cultural, spiritual, race, class, gender, and sexual identities.

Experience Counts!
As a licensed clinical social worker and certified sex therapist with over 40 years of experience, I bring a broad perspective and a practical approach to my work. I deal with issues of relationships, parenting, depression and anxiety, as well as concerns around sexuality, including disparate desire, dysfunction, lack of desire, unusual sexual preferences, sexuality and disability and aging, sexually transmitted diseases, and polyamorous relationships. I have a solo practice with an office in the Mission-Noe Valley district of San Francisco. I offer brief phone consultations, have no office staff and look after all facets of the practice myself. Providing a safe and private enviornment is a priority. Although trained in the psychodynamic model of therapy, I have evolved a briefer, present-focused treatment approach using cognitve and behavioral strategies.Treatment focuses on developing insight about unproductive behaviors, building communication and relationship skills and solidifying gains made in therapy.

Is Your Relationship Becoming Unbearable?
Do you sometimes question your own sanity because you are living with someone who has substance abuse issues or is extremely mean and cruel? If you are in a relationship that is toxic, highly dramatic and emotionally damaging, please let me help you through this difficult time in your life. This type of relationship atmosphere creates what I term "crazy making" because at any given moment, and for the slightest reason, a calm atmosphere can turn very ugly. You become the person who is designated as always wrong, always making the incorrect decision, always jealous, and whatever you do it is never good enough. This type of relationship could be with a parent, a husband or wife, a friend, or anyone who you feel creates a judgmental, highly critical and antagonistic atmosphere. I have been there -- walking in your shoes -- and personally understand what you are going through. It is incredibly painful and can forever harden us if the hurts remain unhealed. Please don't let the cruelty of someone else control and "win" the quality of your life anymore. Please reach out and let me help if you would like to talk. I would be honored to help you.

Existential-Cognitive Therapy: Individual, Couples, Family
Specializing in Anxiety, Mood, and Conflict Management
We all must struggle as we go through life. Yet, I see humans as remarkable and find that we can effectively handle many complex problems when we feel supported and understood. Thus, I offer a non-judgmental environment in which to explore your relationship with the world, the self, and important others in your life. If you choose to come see me, together we will try to better understand the issues you face and how you experience the world. Along the way, we will build new skills and make new meaning together. While I work with a wide range of issues, I specialize in anxiety and mood disorders, adult giftedness issues, and couples/family dynamics (including LGTB dynamics). My therapy approach is integrative, which allows me to better account for each client's personalized way of being in the world and design a treatment plan that is uniquely tailored to the way the issues at hand are being experienced by you. I often start with the most urgent need, like a problematic behavior, and work towards a deeper understanding of the problem experiences, like thoughts, feelings, and values surrounding the issues. My favorite techniques are those that combine mindfulness based cognitive therapies with existential explorations of the self. As a marriage and family therapist, I most enjoy working with the Satir Model to address relational functioning. This model suggests that when safety to be authentic is absent in a family or couple, there is often a sense of being trapped or stuck that can increase conflict, encourage poor choice selection, decrease self esteem, and increase negative thinking. When safety to be authentic is present, there is an overall sense of well being that allows for better conflict management, positive meaning making, good self esteem, and more fulfilling choice selection. Goals of the model are to increase awareness, acceptance, responsibility, and positive thinking and communication skills so problems can be solved more effectively and harmoniously. I have found couples in particular to benefit from the model and be able to deepen partner intimacy by improving acceptance of each other and improving communication about the self.

Couples Skill Building
When the Skills Are Applied the Marriage Will Thrive
Action Relational Therapy Offers Effective Therapy Centered in Relationships and Skill Building. Why couples therapy? Aiming to regain what brought you together: Silent tense car rides replace the lively conversations and laughter of years before. Being in the company of the person you love seems more painful than being alone. What happened? There could be many reasons why couples experience difficulties and misunderstandings that set them apart and weaken the once very close relationship. Couples therapy at ART has been successful because it focuses on partners regaining what brought them together. For Couples Who Have Children: When children experience problems such as substance abuse, ADHD, uncontrollable negative expressions of anger, depression, oppositional behavior, anxiety or any other life difficulty, the relationship between the parents is often affected, and the couple find themselves fighting to help and save their child, and also to maintain their own relationship. Sometimes, it is the wife who feels that she does not get enough emotional support and is parenting the troubled child alone. Her criticism of how her husband is handling the situation affects him deeply and the interactions between them are very negative, and both blame each other for what they are experiencing as parents and as a couple. A Cycle that Repeats Itself: Their troubled relationship is obvious to everyone in the family, and the child facing the difficulties may experience a sense of guilt, hopelessness, and isolation. Not knowing where to turn, or what to do, the child's symptoms become more recurrent and serious, as this happens, the parents become fearful and frustrated, and most of the time, their arguments increase and intensify. In response, the child reaches a crisis. Healing Starts with you, the Couple: Couples therapy along with family therapy will not only restore peaceful, clear communication between husband and wife, but will also greatly increase the chances for their child to regain mental and emotional health. It is not important to find out what came first, the couple's relationship difficulties or their child's symptoms. The most important goal is to achieve a general sense of well being among all members of the family. This is possible by developing skills that will greatly improve the couple's communication, and conflict resolutions styles. For Couples without Children: Gaining back trust, consideration, appreciation and care from the one you love becomes an important goal for couples who find themselves in a relationship crisis. It is not only important to talk about "the issues", but to develop skills that will help couples to establish calm communication without arguing and placing blame on each other. This effectively decreases the crisis couples usually face by the time they seek therapy. At ART of Florida, we facilitate skills development, which means that each spouse learns to identify and apply necessary skills.

Having better relationships is the focus of my practice. I work with individuals and couples to help explore issues that get in their way. Besides seeing clients in private practice, I am a Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
