Psychotherapy
My first question to any new client is, “How will you know when therapy is over?” This helps us both to define the goals of therapy. Together, we’ll focus on solutions to problems, and build on the strengths already there. I’ve been a therapist for children, adults, and families on the North Shore for ten years. My private practice is located in Glenview, Illinois and I work with families and individuals from the surrounding communities including Northbrook, Northfield, Deerfield, Glencoe, and Highland Park as well. I work with clients on issues including anxiety, trauma, divorce, separation, loss, depression, asperger’s, and other spectrum disorders. I provide a safe and relaxing environment that’s designed to help facilitate healing and change.

Find Solutions to Your Concerns in a Safe Confidential Place
My approach to therapy is to at first listen to and understand the issues that are most important to you. Your feelings are valid, and I want to understand you and the concerns that you have. My role is to guide you in finding new solutions to problems, new ways in which to view issues, and to increase the possible options about how to address your concerns. I believe that therapy is a partnership. We can work together to identify what is concerning you, what you want to change, and to set realistic goals. We can discuss a time frame for therapy. Some people want short-term specific goal oriented therapy. You might need to address something that is currently occurring that is very troublesome. There may be specific life issues or problems that you are experiencing for which you want relief or to become unstuck. Some of these issues might be related to family, marital, or other relationship problems, anxiety, grief, employment, or other life issues and stressors. You may want longer-term therapy. Perhaps you are looking for support in managing and coping with a chronic medical condition, pain, mental health issues, a loss, trauma, or alcohol and substance abuse. Whatever your issues and concerns, we can work together to meet your specific needs. I wish to offer you a safe, quiet, pleasant atmosphere in which to discuss your personal concerns. All information discussed is kept strictly confidential under the State of Illinois and Federal HIPAA Laws. Feel free to contact me with your questions and to further inquire about whether I am the right therapist for you.

Acknowledge your courage in taking the first step by searching for a therapist. I use a goal directed approach to help you utilize your innate strengths to increase your emotional well-being. I work with adolescents, adults, families, and couples in a non-judgmental atmosphere. I specialize in treating individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, and life transitions, couples struggling with communication or relationship issues, and families that are looking for guidance in understanding family dynamics and achieving balance.
Carol Cann, MA, LCPC, CADC
Mental Health Counselor/Therapist
Evanston, IL 60201
I specialize in and successfully work with individuals and couples who want to explore and make changes in areas such as depression, anxiety, addiction and recovery, low self-esteem, relationships, and improving communication. Psychotherapy is a collaboration between the client and the therapist, working together to help you achieve your goals. Individual Psychotherapy My clients are usually adults who are intelligent, questioning, and insightful. They have many strengths and skills but find themselves either facing things they don't want (worry, depression, communication problems) or feeling blocked in achieving things they do want (career change, a good relationship, more self-confidence). We will work together to understand what is going on, how your present situation may have gotten to where it is now, and how you would like to see things evolve in the future. Patterns that were useful or even necessary in earlier parts of your life may be getting your way now. Sometimes the simple act of hearing yourself discuss your thoughts and concerns with a caring, nonjudgmental professional helps untangle some "emotional knots." People are capable of amazing changes and accomplishments; counseling can help you realize the best in yourself. An initial assessment appointment is about 90 minutes long; other counseling sessions after that are 45 to 50 minutes each. Weekly appointments are a good idea, at least in the beginning, in order to build a therapeutic relationship and get some momentum on dealing with your issues. How long a course of counseling lasts depends on a number of factors including how you perceive the problems, their severity and length of persistence, and even such outside elements as childcare or work schedules. A person often "knows" when a problem or situation has been resolved. Couples Counseling Couples who love and care about each other can sometimes experience difficulties. You might realize that it's harder to talk to your partner about your real feelings or concerns. You might notice that arguments (often about the same topics) are getting more intense or happening more frequently. You may be feeling that life events (work-related stress, a new baby, an illness,) have overwhelmed your relationship. You may have tried to work things out together on your own; but the changes don't seem to last very long, or you both end up more angry and frustrated than if you didn't try at all. You might be married, living together, dating, or deciding whether making a serious commitment is what you are looking for. This is where couples counseling can make a difference. With the guidance of a warm, genuine, and experienced counselor, you can develop improved communication skills, learn to set necessary boundaries, learn to clarify your needs & healthy ways to meet them, and practice expressing difficult thoughts and feelings in less explosive ways. You'll be reminded and encouraged about the strengths and positive qualities that brought the two of you together in the first place. The supportive counseling environment makes dealing with the problematic parts more tolerable. Couples counseling will also explore each person's understanding of the family they grew up in and how their familial experiences and expectations mesh with those of their partner. Very frequently, some significant issues are still quite alive in the current relationship; having a map of the "minefields" can help you work things out before they get out of control. An initial couples assessment is about 90 minutes long; subsequent sessions are one hour. The couple and counselor work together to plan the course of the treatment and the goals.

I provide a safe place where you and your partner can understand how your feelings and thoughts affect the ways you act, react, think, feel, and relate. I am interested in hearing your story with all the twist and turns of your personal history. When you share your story I will listen and give you back new meanings so you can learn more about yourself and your partner in a new way. Together we will figure out how to resolve your painful conflicts, discover what triggers your emotional reactivity, explore your life's journey more deeply, and if possible, develop new ways to heal your past and revision your future

Solution-Focused Counseling and Psychotherapy
I'm a solution-focused therapist with 30 years experience helping people change their lives. Do you have patterns that keep landing you in unhappy relationships? Do you have core beliefs about yourself and others that limit your happiness and well-being? Do you suffer from depression, anxiety, addiction or relationship distress? My job as your therapist is to help you identify core issues and patterns that impede your well-being and, in partnership with you, develop strategies for improving how you function, think and act in the world. My style is interactive, warm, compassionate, and sometimes humorous. Therapy should produce tangible change, not just insight. Working with the right therapist can have an enormous impact on the quality of your life. Why wait another minute? Let's talk.

Do you find yourself repeatedly drawn into the same frustrating emotional patterns and relationships despite your best intentions and efforts to change? Perhaps an approach that addresses the underlying meaning of these seemingly irrational behaviors is called for. I believe that honesty about our desires, motives, and feelings is the first step in the process of growth and change. The courage to honestly face previously disowned experiences, while ultimately freeing, is not easily achieved alone, apart from a trusting relationship. It is my privilege to create a safe context for you to examine your life in all its complexity. I am convinced that when shameful and painful experiences can be brought to light, understood and fleshed out, troubling symptoms tend to subside and relationships improve. Most importantly, it often becomes easier to feel a greater sense of agency, freedom, and purpose in life. I believe that therapy can give you the courage to shed unnecessarily rigid and self-defeating ways of being and relating to others and allow you to experience more contentment and hope in the future. I welcome the opportunity to partner with you in this process.

Are you feeling depressed, anxious, or just feel that life is not all you had hoped? Are your relationships unfulfilling? Having difficulty letting go of past hurts? Using sex or the internet to avoid others or painful emotions? Does it seem impossible to "get through" to your adolescent son or daughter, or even your spouse? Maybe it is time for a change. I am a warm, compassionate, and patient professional with over twelve years of experience as a therapist, professor, and supervisor who takes a holistic approach to helping clients understand and overcome their concerns. From the beginning of therapy, I will work with you to develop a relationship that feels authentic and safe so that your concerns, emotional wounds, and disappointments as well as joys, pleasures, and surprises can be meaningfully explored. Within the context of this relationship, we will work together to develop a fresh understanding of your internal world and your relationships with others. Though this process of insight is generally very helpful, I also make use of action-oriented strategies to help you make changes and learn new skills in order to meet your goals.

I believe that we all have our own answers inside of us, and that sometimes we need a listening ear, or some additional support to figure out how we want our lives to be different and more satisfying. As an excellent listener, and one who is empathic and understanding, I have helped many clients achieve their own respective goals in life. I have been working in private practice for over 20 years, and have a lot of experience working with clients presenting with many different life problems. I see adults, teens, and children, in individual therapy, couples therapy, and family therapy. Some of my areas of expertise include depression, relationship issues, parenting issues, grief, adjustment difficulties, job stress, etc. I have a particular area of expertise working with incest survivors, and actually all adult survivors from troubled childhoods. I am EMDR trained, and also use cognitive behavioral therapy in my approach to clients, though I tend to be mostly psychodynamic. I welcome the opportunity to consult with any clients who may be interested in seeking counseling!

Counseling for Happiness and Transformation
Seeking the support of a therapist is a positive step toward actively addressing and resolving emotions and situations that are troubling you. Many of my clients start therapy because they are feeling anxious or depressed, burdened by relationship sturggles, or stressed by life's demands. Others use the therapy experience as a way to maximize personal happiness and explore self-improvement. No matter what you may be feeling, please know that you do have the power to change your behavior patterns, the way you think about challenges, how you respond in relationships, and how you care for yourself. It's my honor to guide people in this process. The biggest predictor of success in therapy is whether you feel comfortable with your therapist. My style is supportive and respectful, but also practical and action-oriented. I realize that starting therapy can feel intimidating and I place the highest priority on creating a caring, safe and confidential environment for you to discuss your thoughts and feelings. I invite you to contact me for a confidential, free phone consultation to get a sense of what I offer as a therapist.

Psychotherapy and Transformational Movement
My therapeutic approach is an integrative one. My method is based on a combination of the mind, body, emotions, and spiritual faculties. I encourage clients to express their feelings, thoughts, and emotions not only verbally but also through movement and stillness.I am warm, empathic, and committed to my clients. I have a great capacity to connect from soul to soul. My therapeutic orientation is eclectic, with discussion and movement techniques play a primary role. At times, I employ The Nia and the 5 Stages of Self-Healing Techniques to help clients express their feelings through movement. The ideal client is prepared for a new journey and experience. Clients who work with me soon realize that their strength and freedom comes from within. They feel liberated from their emotional constrains and fears. Through therapy, my clients discover that "They" are the creators and drivers of their own lives. They experience emotional freedom that, in turn brings more balance in their lives. Clients achieve stress relief, improve their self-esteem and self-concept, and experience increased levels of satisfaction in their relationships. They experience an increased ability to work out conflicts in a constructive way.

Together we can explore what's happening in your life. As an insight-oriented, action-focused psychotherapist I offer an encouraging, nonjudgmental environment in which to resolve current issues, identify problematic patterns, and take necessary steps toward improvement. Whether it be the presence of life stressors, or long standing issues, my goal is to support your exploration of thoughts, feelings, and experiences, in order to gain peace of mind. As we establish a strong working relationship, you will experience the benefits of support, empathy, and empowerment, while simultaneously working to create fulfillment in your life. My areas of expertise include relationship concerns, addiction recovery, struggles associated with substance use/abuse, phase of life issues, and alleviation of anxiety and depression. I work intuitively and creatively with you to strengthen relationships, implement effective coping strategies, change unhealthy patterns, and ultimately feel calm and self-assured. Please feel free to contact me with further questions about my techniques, my philosophies, and my specializations, as I am open to discussing how we can work effectively together.

I see adults, adolescents, couples, and families. I utilize an integrative approach to address each client's individual needs, targeting immediate concerns first. I also provide longer term psychotherapy to help clients break out of self-defeating patterns and reach their potential. Healing from painful life experiences can be difficult on your own. If you are currently struggling with challenges in your life, participating in therapy is a proactive way to make changes. By working together, you will gain greater insight into your thoughts and behaviors. With this increased self-awareness you can begin to change those things you’d like to change about yourself and end self-defeating patterns of behavior. I believe the client/therapist relationship is one of the most important aspects of therapy. I offer a supportive, non-judgmental environment in which we will work together to help you achieve your goals. I view each client as a unique individual and work from the assumption that you know yourself best. However, I will challenge you to consider new ways of looking at issues and help you learn new tools and coping techniques to deal with the challenges you are facing. I work with clients in individual and group settings. Currently, I am accepting new clients for individual counseling and a postpartum support group. I also work with couples interested in premarital counseling using the PREPARE/ENRICH program. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you.
