Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

It's Good to Have An End to Journey Towards,
But It's the Journey that Matters in the End
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist and a board certified art therapist. I am located in Palo Alto. My office is easily accessible, located on the first floor of the building with 2 entrances, one that connects directly to the small parking lot of the building and the other to the courtyard, which has multiple bathrooms and water, as well as a waiting room. I provide individual and family therapy for children, adolescents, and their parents, as well as adults. I offer the additional service of home visits or in-home therapy. My office hours are Monday through Thursday, while home visits or meetings can be scheduled throughout the week. I can schedule appointments for the evenings on an as needed basis, in which we can discuss the options available. My office is welcoming, open, and grounding with the hope of offering a sense of peace, inspiration, and calm. As I am an art therapist and work extensively with children, I have space dedicated for art making, play, and sandtray work. I employ my experiences and training, my background, my understanding and curiosity to better help and support your growth, change, and resiliency with the current issues that bring you in to begin working with me. I use a relationship and strength-based approach, which include active curiosity, empathy, and collaboration in the process of therapy. As much as therapy can often stigmatize and label, I work to identify and utilize the strengths, values, and skills already present, but maybe not yet apparent. Patience, acceptance, kindness, resilience, motivation, respect, and other such necessary values and skills, are integral to my approach and therapeutic work. These values and skills will be the very ingredients necessary to mobilize change and healing for you and your family.

I work in Palo Alto and San Francisco seeing individuals and couples. I lead a Writing for Healing group through Meet up that currently meets twice a month in Palo Alto. Are you feeling stuck with a problem or feelings that won't go away? Do you have flashbacks from the past or fears about the future, trouble sleeping, worries that go on and on? Have you tried therapy before but don't know where to turn now for help? Therapy is an important part of healing and finding the right fit is really important. I try to be as sensitive to your needs as possible, using my years of clinical experience, intuition, and theoretical training to help you find your way. I take your needs and wishes seriously and find ways to collaborate towards your desired goals. I am trained in using EMDR for healing trauma and other problems. I also have a special interest in writing for healing and using poetry for therapy. I use writing with individuals if it is helpful and indicated, and also with groups.

Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy for Individuals & Families
Anxiety, Depression, Eating Disorders, Relationships, Career
As a mindfulness-based therapist, I offer a warm and welcoming space for you to explore yourself and your life experience. This is the basis for discovering your own capacity to make meaningful change and growth in your life. My practice integrates the gentle openness of Eastern wisdom with the illuminating methods of Western psychology. Mindfulness helps cultivate a compassionate presence of mind and body and supports the more active process of Self-inquiry. Self-inquiry practices are drawn from the fields of Depth Psychology, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Voice Dialogue, Meditative Inquiry, The Work of Byron Katie and somatic therapy methods such as EMDR and Hakomi. Self-inquiry reveals and releases those beliefs and feelings that are inhibiting a fuller expression of your potential and aspirations. With greater clarity comes greater capacity for change. Our meeting time will provide you with a spacious and dynamic atmosphere for self-discovery and life transformation. I am a California licensed Psychologist with over 15 years of clinical experience providing Individual, Group, Couples and Family Therapy. I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist who works with adults, couples, adult families, and groups in my general private practice. I know that there are confusing and difficult periods in anyone's life when a person may find he or she needs support/help from someone other than their friends or family. At these times, it can be a strange process to seek such assistance from a virtual stranger. In an effort to help you with this process let me share my approach to my work. My experience as a therapist has made me come to trust that individuals, with the help of another, have the capacity to know themselves better than anyone else, to access their own answers and wisdom, and attend to their own wounds. My belief is that people can grow and heal no matter how intense their difficult experiences, defenses and hurts may be. I view myself as the skilled and committed partner in this internal journey of exploration and emotional resolution. Specialized Areas of Interest & Training * I understand and know the experience of Depression and can sit with a person's deep pain as he or she explores its components and begins to heal. * For the past eight years I have been on the emotional journey of caring for my mother, who is living with dementia. As a result, it is my strong wish and intention to support other families who are dealing with the Alzheimer's disease process with a loved one. Currently, I offer a weekly Support Group in my private practice setting for any individual who is helping and relating to a person who is living with any type of Dementia * I have extensive training and interest in helping people with Bereavement & Loss in their lives. Whether the grief is the result of a divorce, the loss of a job, or the death of a loved one, it can be very helpful to work with a compassionate and experienced therapist who can accompany you through this often lonely and isolating process.

Short Term Science-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
C.B.T. for Lasting Change in Thinking and Feeling
I will use my 25 years of experience with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you learn new thinking and feeling skills to solve problems and create lasting change. With training at Yale, Stanford Medical School and the University of Washington, I offer effective CBT approaches for a variety of difficulties including: stress, anxiety, depression, OCD, marriage and couples problems, and other issues facing adults and older adolescents. In my practice, I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This is a scientifically-based therapy approach that has lots of research into its effectiveness with a wide variety of psychological problems. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a modern system of psychotherapy based on the age-old idea that what we think influences our emotions (how we feel), our behavior (how we act), and our physiology (our body reactions). According to this view, automatic thoughts that are distorted, exaggerated, mistaken, or unrealistic contribute to the negative emotional feelings that accompany many common problems, such as depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders. In other words, cognitive therapy assumes that people become depressed or anxious because of the way in which they interpret the events in their lives. It's not what happens, but how you view it, that determines how you feel.

Hoilstic Trauma Informed Practice
My goal in healing work is to support the natural growth of children, couples and individual adults. I will work with your unique insights and tribulations as an individual or family, so that you can recover from whatever limits you from acting on your own inherent resources and vision. Chronic stress is considered the root of most physical and emotional illness. So imagine the power of learning to live nourished by life’s potential rather than worried and stressed by projections of fear. Imagine the difference between straightening your back and looking someone in the face with a smile rather than looking down into yourself. Somatic Psychotherapy helps you integrate these kinds of emerging insights into how you approach your life and relationships.

Relationship-Focused Counseling
For Individuals and Couples
I specialize in relationship focused counseling for individuals and couples. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I currently practice in the Inner Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco. My practice is pretty evenly divided between individual and couples counseling. I love to help people workout how to love and feel securely bonded. I am constantly training and working on my skills and psychotherapeutic approach. I am not one to rest on my laurels. In particular, I love being a couples counselor. I often find it is the perfect space, not only to work on improving relationship, but also to explore one’s individual “stuff” in the process. I strive to show up with as much access to my own wounded parts as I do my healer parts when I sit with clients. That way you get to sit with a fellow traveler on the journey of life. If you want an old school blank slate therapist, tis not me you need to call. Relationship is what ultimately heals. So our first step together is to establish a relationship and alliance. Psychotherapy is truly a vocation for me and I am happy to share my passion and down to earth approach with you.

Therapy for Artists and Introverts
Overcome Depression, Improve Your Relationships
I provide a space free of distractions in order to focus clearly and deeply on the issues that are bringing you to therapy. Some people are seeking resolution to a specific problem, such as difficulty in love, past trauma, conflict with parents or crippling feelings of sadness and guilt. Others come to therapy to uncover their truest selves--to create purpose and meaning, to strive for the most satisfying life possible. I help people to increase their sense of power, agency and control while decreasing feelings of anxiety, self-hatred, guilt or shame. Most of the people with whom I work are interested in improving the quality of relationships in their lives. I have helped many people who initially came to therapy with thoughts about suicide along with intense feelings of sadness, anxiety and guilt. I also frequently work with people who have experienced abuse. I offer daytime and evening hours in two office locations. Both my Hayes Valley Office and my office in the Inner Sunset are convenient to public transportation and have easy daytime street parking. If you have questions, please ask! I look forward to hearing from you.

Help for mind body and soul
I'm a licensed psychotherapist with more than 20 years experience in healthcare. I'm committed to providing thoughtful, passionate, help for humans in pain. Growth and development are cornerstones of my approach. Humans grow up outwardly, but that does not mean we feel grown up inwardly. Even when we have good enough parents and positive childhood experiences, it doesn't mean we don't have unmet needs or unresolved pain from the past. Being able to feel more connected to yourself and to others is one thing therapy with me can provide. If you have had some therapy before, that is good. You may gained some foundation into how therapy works and what you want from in moving forward. If you are interested in exploring therapy with me contact me.

Couples Counseling - Be Your Best Selves
Self-Management Tools to Optimize Your Relationship
In individual work, I am interactive and work concretely with goals and how to achieve those goals. I offer specific tools for improving areas you are struggling with or just want to improve: - creating clear communication, - how to disagree in a non-divisive way, - how to clarify expectations, wants and needs, disappointments and resentments, etc. I am also mindful of the effect that a person's childhood has on how a person acts as an adult and where she/he gets "stuck", so I can "unstick" those places with specific skill-building. My specializations include: depression, anxiety, all relationship issues, eating disorders/bingeing, chronic illness (especially CFIDS and diabetes), and problems with sex/sexuality, childhood history of abuse (intermittent/chronic/severe), and PTSD, including single incidents to severe dissociative processes. In couples work, I support each person’s process and direction. I am fair and balanced with each partner in a couple; I am directive and create new ways of communicating and safe experiments within the session. I work with many different kinds of couples and a large variety of issues. Focus is often on: issues of improved communication, fair fighting, unequal/inhibited sexual desire, abuse history affecting intimacy, separation decisions, clean divorce. I have thirty-two years licensed experience working with individual women, men and couples. I have been in private practice since 1980, when I received my license to practice Marriage and Family Counseling. I just completed a three-year part-time position with UCSF as a Behavior Medicine Specialist for CDAPP (California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program). I trained health care professionals in psychosocial issues in their Sweet Success (pregnancy and diabetes) programs. Before that I worked directly as a Social Worker with pregnant women who had diabetes; I screened them for depression and provided education and support regarding a wide range of psychosocial issues. It also has a number of articles about when a person might need therapy, how to find a therapist and information about couples counseling. There are links to organizations as well as book lists and other useful information.

Accessible, Affordable, & Comprehensive Psychotherapy
Serving Adults, Couples, Children, Adolescents, & Families
Starting or returning to therapy takes courage & getting there is sometimes part of the battle. It's challenging to be really honest with yourself, let alone with someone else. I'm sensitive to this. I'm also very interested in helping you to get some relief and find sustainable change. I want you to uncover a way to be in the world that is authentic, honest, conscious, and fulfilling. I work with Adults, Children, & Adolescents in my practice. I offer a free phone consultation to determine if we should meet in person. Sessions are 50 minutes long. I always encourage people that I work with to come in at least once per week to start. This arrangement seems to work best with the psychotherapy that I offer. We can discuss other options as time goes on and as we assess your needs.

Specialist in assisting with difficult relationships
Feelings of depression, loss, chaos or anxiety can be overwhelming and can interfere with everyday life. If you have developed destructive coping skills to manage painful events or depression/anxiety it is possible to learn new ways new ways of coping and process feelings. If you or your child or adolescent has developed disordered eating patterns, a significant loss such as death of a parent, divorce or separation, or any major life change it can be important to process and express feelings of loss or distress that you may or may not have felt before. I have a special interest in working with adults, children, families and couples that are experiencing big life changes or transitions that are difficult. Psychotherapy | Wellness Coaching
Thank you for visiting my site. I am a licensed therapist and wellness coach whose specialties include: obesity/weight management, bariatric surgery, self-esteem, disordered eating, emotional eating, self-esteem and body image, life transitions, depression, anxiety, stress management, decision making, communication skills, and anger management. WHO I WORK WITH I provide both therapy and life coaching services and am particularly passionate about working with the specific challenges faced by young adults living in the Bay Area. My specialty areas include life transitions, navigating your 20’s and beyond, self-esteem, body image, disordered eating, anxiety, dating and relationships, healthy communication, and entrepreneurial stress. In addition, I have extensive expertise working in the field of weight management and supporting clients who are considering, or who have already undergone, bariatric surgery. MY APPROACH First and foremost, I believe that it’s the relationship between the therapist and client that creates the foundation for change. My clients will tell you that I’m accepting, hopeful interactive, and often incorporate humor (as appropriate) in my work. I believe deeply in the power of positivity and personal connection and offer a highly personalized approach (blending psychotherapy and coaching techniques) tailored to fit each of my client’s unique needs, personality, and preferences. I also believe that you are the ultimate expert on your own life. It’s my job, however, to ask the right questions and act as your guide. I’ll help you identify your strengths and talents, develop self-awareness, and gain confidence where you need it. I’ll challenge you at times and provide feedback on the thoughts and behaviors that may be keeping you stuck. A BIT MORE ABOUT ME... My life has been a series of adventures (both exhilarating and heartbreaking) and I’m a prime example that you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. It took me a long time, and a lot of mistakes, to feel like I was finally getting life right. This is why am so passionate in guiding others through their toughest times and helping them live a meaningful life with intention and direction. I find happiness in nature and in the color green. I value friendship and a good belly laugh above all things and will never turn down an opportunity to listen to live music or sit in the sunshine. I fill my free hours with family time, road trips, being creative, and learning how to be a better ME. I’m left handed and was voted Most Shy in junior high school (yeah, I’ve come a long way).

The purpose of my psychotherapy practice is to help you foster the personal growth and change you seek. I hope to help you explore whatever issues bring you to therapy in a safe, healing, supportive and effective manner. My approach to therapy is client-centered and collaborative. Each person is the expert in his or her life. My role is to assist you by teaching new skills, pointing out and reinforcing existing coping strategies, providing supportive feedback and exploring and helping resolve issues that cause you stress and suffering. I am skilled at helping you create clear goals and develop a plan for how to reach those goals. I am also flexible and supportive if exploration is more appropriate to help you get what you seek from therapy. My style is warm and interactive and incorporates humor. In addition to working with adults and teenagers individually, I enjoy working with couples and families. Much of my work with couples and families is focused on improving communication and problem solving skills. One of the essential goals is helping you be on the same team with one another, and to see difference less as an obstacle and more as a strength with opportunities for growth. I specialize in working with people who are: managing career and life transitions wanting to create lasting change with couples/relationship counseling looking to change their relationship with drugs and alcohol overcoming traumatic life experiences with EMDR adolescents and their families, and gay men and lesbians Please feel free to contact me for further information.

You've likely tried everything, even procrastinated, before considering therapy. I find that emotional suffering is often rooted in relationship patterns, hidden contradictions and emotional blind spots that are hard to recognize and resolve on your own. My work involves facilitating self-exploration and helping you understand your personality tendencies so that you can have greater emotional flexibility and satisfaction in your life. I am a highly trained psychotherapist providing individual therapy, couples counseling and modern psychoanalysis for a wide range of difficulties such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, self-esteem or just wanting more out of life. My approach is direct and collaborative and my style is thoughtful, warm and practical. I will share my thoughts and ideas about what contributes to or has led to your difficulties and together we'll determine if how I'm thinking is useful. I appreciate that it takes courage to look at yourself more deeply. I do my best to bring compassion and encouragement to helping you explore your difficulties. I offer a free phone consultation to help assess your situation and determine if we should meet.

Tired of Fighting? Break Out of the Cycle
of Hurting and Being Hurt!
When you feel like this isn’t the person you married; when you worry that the gap in between you is widening every day; when it feels like the rug has been pulled out from under you after discovering the affair... it can feel like you are in over your head, and you may ask “Is it too late to save my marriage?” My special focus is in couples therapy (marriage counseling), helping couples in crisis to break out of the vicious cycle of hurting and being hurt. I also specialize in helping multi-cultural couples deal with cultural and religious differences that often pose major stumbling blocks to their relationship. If you're single, dealing with a break-up, or your partner is not willing to attend couples counseling, individual therapy can help explore past, current, or future relationships, and gain insight into other personal areas of your life.
