Exploring Challenges & Strengths Through Lived Experiences
I love to help others explore challenges and strengths through the lens of their lived experiences. My goal is to create a space that fosters healing and growth without asking anyone to compromise who they are. As a Black therapist, I understand how culture, identity, and systemic factors shape the way we move through the world—and how those experiences show up in our mental health. I center my work on authenticity, compassion, and cultural humility, offering a therapeutic relationship where you can show up fully, without judgment. Whether you're navigating anxiety, grief, relationship challenges, or the complexities of being bicultural or underrepresented, I’m here to support you in reclaiming your voice and honoring your truth.

Serving the wellness and relationship needs of diverse (including interracial, LGBT) couples civilian and military. I provide counseling and coaching at your home or online. I also provide speaking, training, and consulting services for business, school, and military events and conferences in the areas of cultural diversity, relationship health, parenting, and child wellness. Care for Couples: The majority of same-gender relationships are oftentimes fatally vulnerable to social stresses. We will explore the unexamined, private, moment-to-moment messages that may be impeding connection and intimacy. We will examine the individual (and those of the relationship) developed patterns that act as a kind of immunization against the social toxins of society's stereotypes, prejudices, and outright discrimination. Most importantly help identify and manage the stressors that are experienced physiologically and psychologically that often causes tension and emotional dysfunction in relationships leading to emptiness, distance, and sometimes a complete breakdown of the partnership. Care for Adolescent Males: Counseling may be helpful for teens that are uncomfortable with aspects of their sexuality or uncertain about how to express it. They may benefit from support and the opportunity to clarify their feelings. Therapy may also help the teen adjust to personal, family, and school-related issues or conflicts that emerge. Therapy directed specifically at changing homosexual orientation is not recommended and may be harmful for an unwilling teen. It may create more confusion and anxiety by reinforcing the negative thoughts and emotions with which the child is already struggling. I provide culturally sensitive assessments and treatment to decrease misdiagnosis when considering behavioral, mood, and sexuality disorders of G/L/B/T adolescents. Two of the goals of treatment will be to decrease number of youth experimenting with drugs and alcohol in order to cope with the many stressors as they navigate through the cultural, social, hetero-biased, political, and religious landscapes towards self-actualization. HIV Care I offer collaborative client care to help men living with HIV to help them to continue working, make healthy lifestyle choices, eliminate behaviors that are detrimental to both their physical and mental health, and to improve quality of life and need for increased medications and hospitalization. Services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance or employee benefit plan. Call your human resources department at work or your current health insurance provider to ask: • If you have mental health insurance benefits? • What do you have to pay? • How many sessions are you covered for in a 12 month period? • What is the amount your insurance will pay per counseling/therapy session? • Do you have to get approval from your primary care physician before your insurance will pay for your counseling sessions?

Male & female therapists specializing in a wide variety of problems and treatment solutions. Day, evening, and weekend appointments available. Most major insurance accepted. Conveniently located in the S. Bay area of Los Angeles for over 30 years. Telephones answered 24/7. The learning and the healing that occurs during Psychotherapy and/or Counseling requires an active effort on the part of the client for the therapy to be successful. We strive to maintain the privacy of our clients so that you can feel comfortable sharing very personal matters and participating in the therapeutic process. Psychotherapy involves letting your therapist get to know you. In the course of doing so your therapist will begin to say things to you that help you develop a better self-awareness. We will help you realize skills you possess that you can utilize to help yourself and to get along better with others. We will often suggest ways that you can test ideas or practice new skills during the time between appointments. Psychotherapy has been shown to be very helpful. It can help lead to better relationships, improved communication, and a significant reduction of feelings of unhappiness or distress. It can help you resolve specific problems, or increase the range of choices in your life so that it can be more satisfying and productive. You should be aware that sometimes clients that start therapy feel worse before feeling better. Psychotherapy sometimes involves recalling unpleasant aspects of your past history. Our job is to help you understand and cope with all of this in a way that helps you to feel better and have a better future. Our staff is experienced in a wide range of therapeutic styles. Each of us has individual interests and skills. We work together as a team when different family members need different kinds of help. We are glad to coordinate our efforts with other professionals that might be helping you at the same time (such as your medical doctor). We try very hard to protect the privacy of our clients. California law protects the confidentiality of communications between a client and a mental health provider. Information about our clients is only released when we have your permission. We will always discuss with you, in advance, how we want to respond to requests from others about you.

Let Me Help You Find The Power You Already
Have Within Yourself
I believe that if we turn within, we can find the resources to deal with any problem and we can create a life of satisfaction, love and joy. My ideal client wants a safe, caring relationship in which to open up, share and be authentic. The journey to being oneself is very exciting and for me, therapy is about accepting oneself, expressing oneself and being honest. Doing this inner work with a guide naturally opens doors to connection and resolution of relationship and family problems and creates enthusiasm and a sense of satisfaction and purpose in one's life. I am a Yale/University of Michigan trained psychologist. I work with clients and teach in three graduate psychology programs. I emphasize learning to tolerate and express feelings openly and constructively and I try to be a real and trustable, open and honest, caring and accepting companion on this journey. I come from the humanistic tradition of psychologists who believe that a therapist is only as skilled as he/she is evolved or self-actualized him or herself. For me therapy is a subjective, authentic encounter. I enjoy getting to know my clients and sharing what I have learned on my journey to help them.”

Helping couples, individuals and teens
create happy healthy relationships
Do you remember what your relationship used to feel like? Time goes by, things happen and you and your partner begin to feel the distance and dissatisfaction. You and/or your partner may be wondering: How can I have recreated my parent's relationship? Why are we having the same old arguments about money, kids, sex, in-laws etc.? Why do we communicate like we are from two different planets? How can I be attracting the same type of unhealthy relationship again? Why do I feel judged, misunderstood, alone, and unloved? How can I feel so angry, sad or anxious all the time? Why does he/she always need to be right? Why can't he/she commit? Should I stay or leave? Let us help you to recreate the loving relationship you once had You may be wondering why the relationship you are in feels so familiar? Well it is! In some mystical way we are drawn to our relationships in an unconscious attempt to repair the emotional wounds of childhood. We are unintentionally recreating home. With greater conscious awareness you can begin to create a new vision for your relationship. You will experience how the relationship becomes an opportunity to be in service to your own growth and healing. Your relationship will never be like the first date or first year but you may come to experience a deeper more profound mature love that is only possible with years together. I acknowledge your courage for taking the first step to get the support you need in order to create a deeper, more intimate and meaningful relationship and experience more joy and enthusiasm in your life.

Laura Malandrino Therapist in Hermosa Beach.
Hi, I’m Laura Malandrino — a Registered Therapist based in Hermosa Beach, California. I specialize in helping adults who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves find clarity, meaning, and emotional freedom. My approach is rooted in depth psychology and attachment-based therapy, designed for individuals who are ready to explore what lies beneath the surface. Many of my clients are high-functioning, thoughtful, and self-aware — yet they still struggle with low self-worth, chronic overthinking, or a lingering sense of dissatisfaction. Some are navigating life transitions, midlife shifts, or menopause; others feel like they’re carrying unprocessed emotion from childhood or past relationships. If you’re tired of surface-level solutions and are ready for therapy that goes deeper, you’re in the right place. I help clients work through: Emotional numbness, lack of motivation, or burnout Relationship patterns shaped by early attachment wounds Inner conflict, shame, or self-doubt Feeling “lost,” like life is happening to you, not with you Chronic overthinking and a desire for greater self-connection I work especially well with deep feelers, overthinkers, and those with high processing speed who long for more than just coping tools — they want lasting, meaningful change. Therapy with me is a collaborative process. Together, we’ll make sense of your internal world and reconnect you with the parts of yourself that have been silenced, forgotten, or dismissed. It’s not always easy, but it is deeply transformative. If you’re in the South Bay area — including Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, or anywhere in Los Angeles via teletherapy — I’d love to support you on this journey of healing and self-discovery.

Partnering with You for a Brighter Future
I believe therapy should be a place where you can show up exactly as you are—no masks, no pretending. My goal is to help you explore your life in a deep and meaningful way, with honesty, curiosity, and care. I came to this work from a creative background because I’m passionate about the human experience—what makes us who we are, what holds us back, and what helps us grow. I work with people who want to feel more alive, more connected, and more at peace with themselves and their relationships. Many of my clients are younger men navigating anxiety, self-doubt, or questions of identity and direction. Together, we build confidence, relational skills, and a stronger sense of purpose—without having to give up your sensitivity, creativity, or depth. At the core of my practice is the belief that healing happens in relationship. When you feel truly seen and heard, new possibilities open up. I use an integrative, relational approach that draws from psychodynamic, existential, and humanistic traditions—always tailored to your unique story and needs. I also welcome clients of all identities and backgrounds. I am LGBTQIA+ affirmative, culturally sensitive, and sex-positive. Whoever you are, you are welcome here.

Couples Counseling and Individual Psychotherapy
I offer psychotherapy services that will help you explore whatever it is that might be holding you back from living a vital and robust life. I can help you get your life on a track that will truly put you in touch with “happiness.” When we’re speaking to someone who is truly listening to us in a non-judgmental way we end up saying things we didn’t know we were going to say. This is therapeutic. When we talk to someone whom we feel truly hears us and “gets” us, who accepts us as we are . . . we begin to feel freer to reveal to that person (and, by proxy, to ourselves) more of who we really are. This is therapeutic. The healing that occurs in this safe space of speaking and being heard and seen is rarely duplicated in the world outside the consulting room. If you’re fortunate enough to have someone who gives you this kind of attention, then you know how precious that is. I create a safe space for revealing and discovering who you are, how you’re being in the world, and, if necessary, why? I help you find in yourself your preferred mode of being, to create more effective ways of getting what you want out of your life, and I work with you to execute a plan to make that happen. My work with couples (of any sexual orientation) includes conflict reduction, improving communication, and creating more intimate and ultimately satisfying relationships. There is often a breakdown in communication that takes place within a couple and leads to conflict, tension and even the dissolution of the bonded relationship altogether. Luckily, couples therapy addresses what is being said between two people, what is being heard, and what to do when the couple needs help finding a way to re-connect and enjoy each other again. There are few things more painful than feeling like you’ve lost the love you once shared with someone. If you’re in this position, you know exactly what I mean. It’s heartbreaking to feel disconnected from your loved one. Maybe the passion is missing, your day to day routine has dulled the spontaneity you once had, or you just don’t seem to know how to talk to each other anymore. I love working with couples because I get to be part of a process that allows people to restore their ability to experience companionship in a healthy and satisfying way. I now offer Skype sessions for your convenience.

From childhood to adulthood to older years, we face challenges that are mostly relational and/or emotional. If you don't have the right tools to deal with these challenges, they become roadblocks in relationships with yourself as well as significant people in your life-i.e. your partner, children, parents, siblings, and friends. To improve the quality of your life and relationships, to explore your purpose and direction in life, I can guide you on a path to self-fulfillment. You will develop an awareness of the past, learn to live healthier in the present by better managing yourself and your relationships, and focus on planning a more hopeful journey to the future. I work with individuals, couples, and parents. My specialties are relationship issues, mood disorders, and addiction. If you feel depressed/ anxious, have relationship problems, or not sure about the direction in your life, then don’t wait to make an appointment with me. I believe in a holistic attitude to mind's wellness and relationships. To achieve this I use different theoretical frameworks from an existential approach to life's problems, to exploring unhealthy behaviors/thoughts, to accepting the "self", and to making changes that can lead to a more fulfilling life.

Make Life Happen!
I believe healing takes place on the levels of emotional, mental, physical and spiritual. I work from a more holistic approach to change behaviors of negative thinking, while at the same time working through deep feelings of emotional pain to help make changes in one's soul and physical body pain. I am here to help clients work through their problems so that they can have better lives and better relationships with others. I have worked with clients who have addictions, anxiety and depression. I have worked with clients who have gone through domestic violence and other violent crimes against them. I specialize in working with children who have been abused and neglected by their parents or someone that they have trusted in their lives. I believe psychotherapy can help everyone, but it sometimes is a long and difficult journey that requires commitment, time and patience. I accept low fees and work on a sliding scale to adjust to one's financial situation. If you are serious about making changes in your life, then I am here to help you walk through your journey to get to the other side of healing.

Psychotherapy for Adolescents and Adults
Help with Depression, Anxiety, and Eating Disorders
In my practice I provide psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. I focus on empirically validated treatments that science demonstrates work. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for problems including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. I am a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) through IAEDP. Eating Disorders Treatment I have special interest and expertise in the treatment of adult and adolescent eating disorders including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Body image issues. My approach to working with eating disorders is based on empirically validated treatments. I provide CBT to adults and older adolescents with eating disorders and family based therapy (Maudsley model) to adolescents with eating disorders. A course of CBT for bulimia is usually about 20 sessions. Family based therapy (FBT) usually consists of 20 treatment sessions over a course of 6 to 12 months. I work collaboratively with other treatment professionals and have a dietitian in my suite who is available to provide dietary counseling. Family Based Therapy for Anorexia and Bulimia (Maudsley) For adolescents with anorexia, the outpatient treatment of choice is Family-Based Treatment (FBT or Maudsley Approach). I am certified in Maudsley Family Based Treatment through the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders and am one of the only therapists in my area to have this certification. In this treatment, no one in the family is blamed for the development of the eating disorder. The symptoms are viewed as outside the child’s control and having taken on a life of their own. In contrast to traditional therapies, Maudlsey Family-Based Therapy enlists the support of parents and siblings and even extended family as resources in helping the adolescent battle the eating disorder. Treatment initially focuses on weight restoration, with the parents tasked with providing adequate nutrition for their child during family meals. The therapist supports the parents in this difficult task of refeeding and also models a non blaming stance that views the eating disorder as an external force that must be fought off by the family working together. In the second phase of treatment, once the child has gained weight and starts to exhibit more normal eating behaviors, the child is gradually given back more control over their own eating. In the last phase of treatment development and comorbid issues are addressed within the family context Adult Treatment Cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders was pioneered by Christopher Fairburn, MD in 1981 and has been updated several times, including a revision in 1993 co-authored by my mentor, Dr. Terence Wilson (Fairburn, C. G., Marcus, M.D., & Wilson, G. T. (1993). The most recent revision is an “enhanced” (CBT-E) protocol (Fairburn, Christopher G., 2008). A core issue in all eating disorders is overconcern with shape and weight. Cognitive behavioral therapy, which focuses on addressing the various behaviors, thoughts, and feelings that are components of this core overconcern, is particularly well-suited to treat eating disorders. Cognitive behavioral therapy also addresses general personality characteristics that maintain eating disorders. Cognitive behavioral therapy has become the leading evidence-based treatment for adults with eating disorders. It has been tested in numerous clinical trials and proven successful. Research studies indicate that about two-thirds of the patients who complete treatment have an excellent response. It can also be successfully employed with older adolescents with bulimia nervosa. Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses primarily on factors in the present that are keeping the eating disorder going. The therapist and client work collaboratively to understand the client’s problem and develop strategies to overcome it.

Deep Healing of Trauma, Anxiety, Depression
Health and Relationship Issues
My greatest passion in life is to witness the growth I see in my clients. I find it very rewarding to watch others transform into the person they aspire to be---increasingly successful, peaceful, happy, loving, confident, strong, resilient, effective and inspired. My approach ventures beyond conventional psychotherapy to provide lasting change the first time around. Old, unwanted reactions and tendencies quickly disappear as positive thoughts, behaviors, and feelings take their place. I use mind-body approaches to incorporate a whole-system approach. I work at the deepest levels of the mind -- deeper than any other form of psychotherapy available, to integrate conflicting states of mind that are responsible for symptoms and maladaptive behaviors. Wounded parts of self are bathed in love, compassion and healing experiences in order to meet needs that were not adequately met in the past. As a result, your wounded parts of self get unstuck from the past and integrate into your most adult, Higher Self, allowing you to achieve wholeness and evolve into your healthiest and highest states of mind and being. This approach is equally effective for mild to severe issues.

California Licensed Individual, Couples, and Sex Therapy
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist that approaches therapy with a holistic point of view. Over the past twelve years, I have had the opportunity to work with many diverse people from various cultures, ages ranges, and socio-economic systems. Many of the issues I assist with include Trauma/PTSD, sexual assault/molestation, stress/panic attacks, chronic pain, and relationship dynamics. I am also an expressive art therapist. That means I use right and left-brain processes such as breathing exercises, meditation, dominant/non-dominant handwriting, dance/movement, collage and art to access deeper elements of self for whole body healing. My style is collaborative, empathic, compassionate, and with the utmost respect for your strengths and internal resources. I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, psychodynamic, mindfulness, expressive arts and somatic psychotherapy to ensure you are able to calm anxiety, thrive after trauma, and rediscover your most precious assets. We will explore all of you including your bio-psycho-social-spiritual values, beliefs, and thought patterns. As a holistic psychotherapist, we co-create a system that looks at your diet, lifestyle choices, spiritual/religious beliefs, and the mind/body connection that accesses deeper aspects of yourself for whole body healing. I specialize in working with youth, adults, couples, and groups; many of whom consider themselves part of the LGBTQ community struggling with a variety of tribulations including life transitions, strong emotions of anxiety and/or anger, trauma, spirituality, and grief/bereavement. Prior to psychotherapy, I worked in the government and private sectors of information technology. My experience has given me a deep understanding of what it takes to optimize leadership, C-level executives, and motivate employees for optimal performance. Through my leadership and team building retreats and workshops, your team can master critical thinking, expand creativity, and foster innovation for business development and growth.

"Knowing Yourself Is the Beginning of All Wisdom"- Aristotle
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #80907 specializing in providing psychotherapy, counseling, and mental health services for adolescents, teens, individuals, couples, and families. I provide services at my private-practice offices in both Torrance and Long Beach. I have over 10 years of experience working in the social service and mental health fields with a wide variety of issues, populations, and cultures. I have presented clinical and academic work both locally and internationaly, have taught psychology and philosophy at various colleges, and am currently teaching psychology at Long Beach City College. Taking that first step toward getting help or seeking a greater knowledge of Self can be the hardest part and I understand that. I have faced many obstacles in my journey through life, and am grateful to now be in a position to help others. I focus on providing a safe environment in order to help you speak freely, share your story, ask difficult questions, and face challenging issues in a confidential exchange. In beginning this inquiry, today you are one step closer to finding answers. Sometimes circumstances befall us in our journey through life that can leave us feeling lost or confused with various questions. These are some of the ways in which those questions surface: Is something holding you back in life? Is something getting you down that you feel you can’t share with anyone? Do you question why you made certain choices in life? Are you struggling in your relationships? Are you at a crossroads in life? Do you question the meaning of life? Do you crave a better knowledge of Self? Does your past have too much influence and control on your present? Are you seeking personal and relational development? Do you want to attain a new way of seeing your self so you can create a new way of being? If you have questions like these or similar ones, therapy and counseling may be able to help. In begining this search and inquiry for yourself, today you are one step closer to expressing yourself and answering questions so that you can feel a stronger sense of Self-empowerment on a positive path to growth and well-being. As a depth psychotherapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating and affirming everyday. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand how they effect you in the present in order to resolve challenges in your life and create a new way of being. By utilizing a variety of therapy approaches and techniques chosen to both suit who you are a person and address the issues you bring forth, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. I have also studied philosophy at the University of Liverpool in England, and am open to discussing any of life's difficult questions, spirituality issues, and existential themes that may be running through your mind. If you're looking for extra support and guidance through a challenging situation or you're just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals. Transgender Expert
Gender Identity & Sexual Orientation Exploration
I have been a licensed marriage and family therapist in Los Angeles, CA for 24 years. My office is located in West Los Angeles and my office is comfortable, animal friendly and located near the 405 and 10 Freeways. I received my license in 1991 and my background is working with foster children. I started up several programs and found the work rewarding and difficult. Being a foster parent is a hard job because it was always the goal to reunify the child with their parents if at all possible. I started working with transgender people almost 20 years ago and have helped so many people transition to become themselves. I was an active member of the Los Angeles Gender Center for many years before going out on my own with a psychiatrist to start my own company called, Gender Wellness of Los Angeles that has been in practice for over 13 years. I have loved my work in the transgender community and am an active member of World Professional Association of Transgender Health. As an organization we were instrumental in getting Gender Identity Disorder removed from the DSM-IV and replaced it with Gender Dysphoria. It is no longer a mental disorder and is now considered a medical condition. As a member of this organization, I am active in working with policy and procedures for the transgender community and helping them get access to the best doctors, mental health providers and all other resources necessary for a happy and successful transition. My company is called Gender Wellness of Los Angeles and we are able to provide the necessary letters needed for hormones and sex confirming surgeries to the female to male and male to female transgender person. We provide individual, family and couples counseling as well as referrals to a psychiatrist for psychotropic medications if needed. Additionally, I work with the gay/lesbian population as well as anyone seeking therapy who wants to change behaviors that are no longer working for them in their lives. I use a direct approach and believe that the client and myself are a team working together to improve relationships to friends, family, co-workers and loved ones.
Eating Disorder Recovery for Women

Adult Women Face Different Recovery Challenges Than Teens
You Can Live a Better Life in Freedom
My Los Angeles private practice is dedicated to women wanting freedom from their eating disorder. I work with women with eating disorders and with adults who love a woman with an eating disorder. Author: Healing Your Hungry Heart. Making your appointment During that conversation you and I will determine if an in-person appointment seems like the best next step for you. If it is not, then I will do my best to refer you to the kind of treatment you both decide is in your best interest. If you do meet with me for a face to face appointment you will fill out required legal forms such as HIPPA, informed consent, basic client information, etc. which takes about five to eight minutes. Then you and I will talk. Often many powerful feelings come up quickly in that first meeting. I will give you emotional room to feel what you feel and time to share whatever you are willing to talk about. You will feel what it's like to be in a room with me. You will know if I seem to understand your situation and can be with you as you feel what you feel. You will know if I seem to know something and might be able to accompany you and support you on your recovery journey. You may feel rigid. You may feel sad or angry. You may feel relief and hope. You may feel all these things. If you do, and you're willing and I believe that I may be able to help you and work with you, then you will make another appointment. At that point we are building a relationship and a healing bond that supports your steps toward a more free life. Making an appointment for someone you love Mothers, fathers, husbands, boyfriends, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters call me to make appointments for the woman they care about who has an eating disorder. These people love and are worried about the suffering person. They may be looking for ways to convince their loved one to go into treatment. They may be helping that person by doing some scouting to find out what may be available in terms of treatment, and during their research they found me. However, only the person who will actually be in treatment can make the appointment. Adults with eating disorders can be resistant to getting help, and an adult cannot be forced into treatment. If you are trying to help someone who is unwilling to move toward recovery work, then I will suggest various kinds of support and perhaps therapy that might be helpful to you. If you are doing scout work for a person who is willing to go into treatment then I will have a conversation, sometimes quite lengthy, with you. I'll answer your questions and offer information that seems relevant for the situation you describe. The conversation can be lengthy because I will tell you that if the woman makes an appointment with me, this is the last conversation you and I will have. Once an adult makes an appointment with me I become that person's psychotherapist exclusively. I will refer family members to other clinicians if needed. For deep and effective work between my client and I to unfold, the client must know that what she says and feels is private, that the space is hers, that I will honor and safeguard boundaries and that the she doesn't have to share or reveal anything to anyone unless she so chooses. If you are calling for someone else I know you are suffering. I know you are probably in a delicate situation and are doing your best to encourage your loved one to get help without offending her. You want to find the best person possible who can help her, and you don't know who might be. You call me with hope and courage. I respect you for reaching out on your loved one's behalf. I will be as sensitive and straightforward with you as I can be.

Therapy Can Help!
I work with individuals, couples, adolescents and groups in my practice, providing psychotherapy and counseling. The counseling I provide is down-to-earth, and collaborative. Your therapy has to feel like a good fit, so I use my curiosity, and training to incorporate the right kind of approach for you. In therapy, we look at the past and how it affects your present day choices and patterns. We look at ways in which you may be frustrated or stuck and learn new tools that can help you grow and reach your goals. My interests and focus include: depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, chronic pain, addictions, eating disorders and adolescents. I also like to work with people struggling with life transitions and both women's and men's issues. I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and work specifically with trauma, PTSD and the body. I will be offering an Eating Disorder/Body Image Group as well as a Co-Ed Process Therapy Group in my practice. I supervise an MFT Intern that can provide sliding scale psychotherapy in my practice.

We All Need Help Sometimes
I'm here to help you feel better, do better, and get better
Whether you're experiencing depression, anxiety, or stress, or if you have problems at work or at home, my sole aim is to help you make the changes you desire. Likewise, if you're in a relationship and you're not getting along, suffering from a betrayal, or simply having trouble finding a partner, I can help you to understand what's going on and overcome your relationship challenges. I take a two-prong approach. 1) To help you find out "how did I get here?" so you don't have to re-visit this place again. 2) To help you learn new ways of relating, coping, and expressing yourself that foster good relationships, friendships, and work connections. If people have been telling you that you need to get over it or to move on, or if you think so yourself, all that does is add pressure to an already difficult experience. I take an "addition" approach - learning new tools and thinking about things in new ways - rather than a "getting rid of" approach (which doesn't work anyway!) Thoughts like - What's wrong with me? Why can't I be like other people - doesn't mean that something is ACTUALLY wrong with you! It could be that you're doing your best to cope with certain challenges, some of which may have arisen in your past. For example, if you were betrayed in a prior relationship and you don't trust your current partner, you're using a former coping strategy in a new situation. I would help you find new ways to deal with the lack of trust and other feelings that could be causing you to act in ways that may have hurt your partner and the relationship. As another example, let's say that there was a lot of fighting in your family and you closed yourself off in your room. Now, any time there's the potential for conflict you withdraw. You're protecting yourself from either being hurt or hurting the other person. But this relationship might be different from your past ones (including your family), and withdrawing could actually be harmful. With either example, one goal for therapy would be find new ways to cope with these feelings, as well as to understand that nothing is "wrong" with you. It's just that your actions may be counter-productive. The other goal is Empowerment; sometimes you may choose to withdraw or be untrusting - but the key is to choose and not automatically react that way. Another way I see therapy is putting puzzle pieces together. You may have all of the pieces, but we need to put them together to figure out what motivates you and why you feel the way you do - as well as making the changes you desire.

LIFE CHANGING PSYCHOTHERAPY
Different people respond to different methods of healing. For that reason I am trained in a number of different healing modalities such as: Humanistic Psychology— This approach provides you with a safe, unconditionally accepting experience in the therapeutic relationship. In this way we work to remove any toxic shame you may be carrying from the past. This can be particularly helpful if you come from a difficult family upbringing. Many of our issues we carry are a result of negative relationship patterns from the past. Humanistic psychology does reparative work by making the therapeutic relationship as accepting, non-judgmental, and healing as possible. Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Inner Child Work— These tools teach you how to relate to yourself in a loving, present time, productive manner. Most of us suffer from a strong “inner critic.” With the skills of Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Inner Child work, you will learn to alleviate suffering generated by the self-critic and move forward. Cognitive Behavioral Work— The most commonly used type of therapy, CBT is effective for helping you move out of stagnation and into accountable action when working on achieving specific goals. Goals are set and tracked within the therapy so you are not alone in them. It is sometimes not enough to gain insight and do emotional healing in therapy, we often need to work toward concrete behavioral changes. CBT lets us do just that. Emotional Freedom Technique-- Also referred to as “tapping”, this healing modality is used specifically to reduce cortisol levels in your blood stream which will in turn ease depression and anxiety. Cortisol is the hormone released by the brain’s amygdala gland when under stress— sometimes resulting in paralyzing fears. Once cortisol levels reduce, you will often feel able to handle whatever is challenging you in a more direct, effective manner. How do you work in couples counseling? As well as being a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I am also a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist. If you are currently experiencing issues in your romantic relationship, it is important to find a therapist who has specific couples training to help you. Imago relationship therapy is one of the most renowned therapies in treating couples. Imago therapy is based on learning effective “mirroring” communication skills, being able to hold each person’s experience in equal esteem, and making decisions in a cooperative / safe way. In the process we heal the “unfinished business of childhood” (i.e. past hurts or issues) that we transfer over from our family of origin to our adult romantic partners. As a result of this kind of healing we gain greater maturity, intimacy, and fulfillment in relationships. See the Imago Couples Therapy section of this site for more. What about life coaching? I am also a Certified Strategic Intervention Life Coach. Tony Robbins and Cloe Madanes developed this form of life coaching. The coaching is based off Mr. Robbins’ research and seminars as well as Ms. Madanes’ experience as a psychotherapist and author. Together they coined the theory of “Human Needs Psychology”. This theory states that all of our behaviors and beliefs are driven by six basic needs. When these needs are made conscious we are better equipped at fulfilling them in ways that provide optimal growth and happiness. Life coaching might best be thought of as a form of unique behavioral therapy. That is, when you stop ruminating on the reasons things are not working out, and start changing your behavior to act in accord with what you say you want, your goals can be achieved. I also run men's groups. Please inquire for more info. If you're ready to take a step toward change, contact me. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to see if this might be a good fit for you.
