Compassionate, Practical Therapy
Helping you build insight, strength, and resilience.
I’m a licensed psychoanalyst and psychotherapist offering in-person and virtual sessions for individuals and couples. My goal is to help you better understand your challenges and draw on your strengths, abilities, and inner resources. As we work together, you’ll have my full attention and presence, along with compassion, empathy, and insight to support you throughout the process. I don’t use a one-size-fits-all method. I engage with the whole of who you are—your thoughts, emotions, history, and hopes for the future. It’s deeply meaningful to walk alongside my clients as they grow, change, and pursue both personal and professional goals. If this resonates with you, I invite you to reach out. Drawing on extensive training and broad life experience, I offer an approach that’s both clinically grounded and practical. My hope is that we can work together to better understand your story and move your life forward in meaningful new ways.

Stuck In Patterns That No Longer Serve You Well?
Why Aren't Things Working Out Like You Thought They Would?
If you can’t seem to make things work for you, and you want to talk to someone about how to change that, I can help. My job is to provide you with insight into how you get in your way of getting the things you want in life, so you can make changes that will serve you better than the same old same old way of doing things that keeps you stuck in patterns with undesirable outcomes. No doubt about it, change is hard. You’ve been who you are for a long time, and are used to navigating our difficult world in a particular way. The problem is, it just isn’t working. So it’s not surprising that you’re confused, conflicted, anxious or depressed. I have a flexible approach to working with people, since one size does not fit all. My twelve years of training and over a quarter century’s worth of experience working with people has paid off. I’ve learned to listen in a non-judgmental way, and to help you feel safe in revealing your fears, feelings and thoughts, all in your own time, at your own pace. There may be things you want to change about yourself, and other things you want to keep. You get to make all the decisions about who you are and want to be. I’m here to point out what might work better for you, but not to tell you what to do. There’s no magic that can turn things around instantly, but if you’re committed to the process you can make significant strides in a reasonable period of time. I invite you to come in for a no-obligation consultation to see if you feel comfortable talking with me about what in your life is not how you want it to be. If you choose not to continue with me, there's no charge for the consultation.

Better Tools, Deeper Awareness, Clearer Choices, Fuller Life
Do past beliefs and negative patterns hold you back from living life fully? If so, you need to know that HEALING and CHANGE are always possible. IT IS NEVER TOO LATE. Successful clients want to change and are committed to the emotional work necessary to achieve their goals. This takes courage...and if you are resonating with this, you have already taken the first step. I work with individuals, families and couples. My areas of expertise include: PTSD/trauma anxiety and phobias depression adults who were wounded as children relationship issues identity and life crises creativity blocks life goals related to aging ...and breaking negative patterns (be they personal, romantic, platonic, familial or professional) Treatment goals are collaboratively identified and are adjusted based on changing client needs and desires. Often, no single treatment technique is sufficient in helping clients achieve both the intellectual insight and emotional understanding needed for lasting change. Among the therapeutic techniques I offer, alone or in combination, are SENSORIMOTOR PSYCHOTHERAPY, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, EMDR, Short-Term Solution Focused Psychotherapy, Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy, and Ericksonian Hypnotherapy.. i have trained with some of the leading experts in the field of Psychotherapy. But the MOST IMPORTANT thing that I bring to my clients' healing process isn't what I know. IT'S WHAT I UNDERSTAND.

Our problems with our friends lovers families and workmates, frequently reflect our struggles with our selves. Feeling stuck, lost chronically angry or unhappy, can result from conflicts and feeling states inside us that we are unaware of. Also, unresolved issues from the past, can result in chronic emotional disruption and pattens of thinking feeling and perceiving that work against us I provide the kind of focused listening and safe, relaxed environment that allows each individual I work with to develop a self awareness and self acceptance that lead internal and external changes. I do insight oriented psychotherapy combined with EMDR, and other techniques that are geared toward faster resolution of old issues, and paving the way toward making change.

"Therapist to the Therapy"
I am an empathic human being and a highly trained Certified Psychoanalyst, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Credentialed Alcoholism Counselor. I help others manage and resolve difficulties of the heart -- love, loss and work during significant life changes; for example, career change, death/illness in family, divorce, relapse with addiction(s), criminal arrests, loss of work, etc. I am committed to providing high-quality professional assessment and counseling/psychotherapy to people who have not accessed or have had prior unsatisfactory experiences with psychotherapy. I am also committed to travel the lengthy road of psychoanalysis with people who want to take this voyage. A second arm of my private practice is "Second Opinions": Some consumers are in a "stalemate" in their present "therapy"-- where there is a serious impasse and "work" is forfeited. I consult with individuals who can no longer productively work in their current therapy, oftentimes beginning to resolve major impasses. On occasion, the individual's therapist volunteers to be part of this process. In some cases, fruitful work is resumed. In other instances, a decision to leave the current therapy ensues. My interest in psychotherapy is borne by helping clients learn about themselves in seeing things differently—not changing their world, but having new eyes. By engaging in this process one finds obstacles in the past that impinge in reaching one’s full potential in the present. Psychotherapy is helpful in working through such issues by addressing the underlying emotions and bringing them into awareness. One may achieve a sense of inner peace and emotional freedom, making possible more fulfilling relationships with oneself and others. A third arm of my private practice is assistance to criminal defense attorneys specializing in high-profile white collar crime and DWI/DUIs. I have navigated the field of expert witness and prepared confidential psychiatric reports as well as prepleading memoranda to help individuals and their counsel have a win-win situation.

Understand yourself better, become more free and fulfilled
My practice is trauma-focused, psychodynamic and relational
As your therapist, first and foremost I will respect the courage of your decision to seek therapy and create a foundation of safety, acceptance, and collaboration. I strongly believe that symptom reduction (e.g., anxiety, panic, constant worrying, depression, high stress levels, complex PTSD), and an exploration of the root causes of your most distressing problems are both vital aspects of a helpful therapeutic experience. I foster a therapeutic relationship that honors my clients’ conscious minds as well as feelings, symptoms, and behaviors that they may find confusing and painful, but may be clues to presenting problems. I also consider my clients' current life situations holistically, collaborating with them to explore physical, nutritional, general life style, social support, and self-regulation issues to find areas of resilience as well as those that could be strengthened. Presently, I work with late teens and adults of all ages. I work with clients who struggle with symptoms which may be the aftermath of loss, abuse or other difficult experiences, or are simply perplexed with why they repeat distressing patterns which cause them pain. My clients may enter therapy to explore "why they have such difficulty regulating their emotions", or, "why they continue to pursue relationships that are ultimately painful", or, "why it's so hard to feel anything"; they may also enter therapy to receive assistance with specific issues such as life transitions, relationship difficulties, and work or academic problems. I also specialize in the impact of past and current interpersonal trauma or loss on parenting capacities, and assist my clients when these experiences interfere with being loving and supportive parents in the present. My work blends relational psychotherapeutic approaches, trauma-focused assessment and treatment, and psychoeducation for both clients and their families where appropriate. My trauma studies, which included EMDRIA-approved advanced EMDR training, as well as principles of Internal Family Systems and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, have solidified my longstanding belief that therapy must often go beyond talk and attend to messages from our physical selves that may provide clues to where we are most "stuck". While I have been trained in several modalities and my approach is eclectic, I will meet you where you are presently to address the problems that are most distressing to you.

Community-Focused, Sliding Scale
Group Practice in Midtown
NYC AFFIRMATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY LCSW PLLC is a community focused sustainable sliding scale mental health practice in Manhattan providing treatment to individual adults ages 18+. Our mission is simple: provide affirmative psychotherapy in a sustainable way to the community. By affirmative we mean that we do not view individuals from the perspective of being defective or needing to be fixed. We instead recognize the innate strengths that continue to allow people to function while enduring difficult life circumstances. Challenging childhoods and distressing adult experiences, coupled with the toxic impact of systemic oppression, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and xenophobia impact our mental health. Our goal is to fill a gap in mental health services provided to those that are historically marginalized and disenfranchised; we are especially committed to serving queer communities of color. We also strive to be culturally aware and trauma-informed. And, most importantly, we’re here to help you feel better and make change. We firmly believe that change is possible and that we as human beings grow in relationships where an empathic and attuned other bears witness to our struggles. You are not alone. Lets take the next step together.

Living to the Fullest
As a psychologist and psychotherapist, I believe that psychotherapy is most beneficial when it can address both broad and specific problems and help people find solutions to life's conflicts and stressors. Chronic stress and chronic relational conflicts often become obstacles to leading an emotionally healthy and rewarding existence. Ultimately, I believe the goal of therapy is to enable people to make decisions that will allow them to feel most satisfied, productive and in control of their lives. Likewise, learning to cope with life's everyday stressors, as well as crises can be an important part of psychotherapeutic work. My approach is tailored to individual needs and focuses on building a collaborative dialogue in which to work towards identified therapeutic goals. This includes symptom reduction (anxiety, depression, self-harm), as well asworking with issues pertaining to gender, sexuality, creative blocks, performance anxiety, infertility and parenting issues, among others. Consulting with a psychologist and taking the step forward to begin psychotherapy can be one of the best investments you make in yourself. Therapy is an effective tool to manage symptoms of anxiety and depression, and foster personal growth. Research has shown that psychotherapy enhances overall mental health, and self-esteem. Psychotherapy can also be helpful in making informed decisions regarding real life dilemmas. I provide a safe and comfortable environment in which to explore the subtle and not-so-subtle psychological and emotional factors that influence all aspects of one's life.

I am a warm, engaging Clinical Psychologist. My orientation is cognitively-based, so therapy sessions are conversational, pragmatic, and focused primarily on the here-and-now. We work on setting therapeutic goals and collaborate on methods to attain them. In addition to my practice, I am active on the faculty at Weill-Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital. Anxiety is the body’s “hard-wired” false alarm. Defusing these alarms by facing dreaded fears is the central ingredient in overcoming shyness, panic attacks, or phobias. The art of treatment is knowing exactly how to fit the plan to the individual, and what procedures will best bring this about. In established relationships, people come to take each other for granted, which is the root of most other issues. The emphasis is on focusing upon what is or has been wonderful about the relationship, and acting on these strengths. How often are compliments, favors or gifts exchanged? This makes even significant conflict far easier to resolve! Activating oneself, self-care, exercise, taking pleasure and rediscovering a sense of accomplishment in the "little things" is a first and necessary step toward improvement. Surprisingly, progress becomes smoother once the inertia is overcome. Diets don't work. Individualized programs with a minimum of restriction and deprivation are motivating. Healthy foods, eaten frequently, and a positive sense of self go a long way. Moreover, bulimia is treatable, through carefully tailored food choices, mood management, and learning to tolerate a sense of being overwhelmingly full.

Couples or Family Counseling or Psychotherapy Couples counseling or psychotherapy is often indicated to address issues regarding trust, sexual intimacy, choices regarding health consciousness and future safety, and, in some instances, real or perceived infidelity. An individual who has been diagnosed with the herpes virus may request couples services to assist in negotiating herpes-related issues with former partners or with new ones. We need to feel understood, safe, and supported to create life-long change, and in my practice I work to establish a respectful and warm relationship where this growth and development can occur. I believe each person is capable of tremendous change and view giving the gift of therapy as an honor. I find by exploring both the past and the present, clients are better able to recognize life patterns which may be affecting their relationships, career, and overall mental health. However, I also believe each person is unique and do not utilize a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Rather, I work with clients in a collaborative manner, and together we establish the direction and pace of our work. I work with individuals and couples from a variety of cultural, ethnic, and spiritual backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities. Overall, I think you will find my approach open, flexible, affirming, and engaging. Clients usually begin sessions with a variety of concerns such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem concerns, or problems with romantic and personal relationships. I also work with clients on issues of trauma and past abuse, body image and eating disorders, LGBTQI issues, and women's issues.

Integrative Psychotherapy
“I am a practitioner and teacher of Integrative Psychotherapy for over thirty years. My approach to wellness recognizes the interconnection between mind, body and spirit and offers a natural way of attaining inner clarity, personal fulfillment, and physical and emotional health. Our work together is NOT a prolonged process but rather an intense learning experience. I teach you specific tools for becoming your own authority in your pursuit towards a happier and more balanced way of life. During our work together, I will offer guidance in helping you to:gain a holistic understanding of your life challenge, problem and/or illness; discover and release emotional toxins;use powerful mental techniques for symptom relief and problem resolution;implement life changes needed to achieve and maintain optimal health. To achieve these goals I utilize: mental imagery, voluntary will training, dreamwork, cognitive-behavioral approach, clinical hypnosis, psycho-physiognomy, EFT, and spiritual counseling. I have helped thousands of clients to achieve their goals, ranging from overcoming panic attacks and depression, to saving marriages and healing from serious physical illnesses.”

As a therapist, my priority is to customize treatments for the individual and not force clients to conform to predetermined methods. I provide individual, couples, and group therapy, and if appropriate, can offer a combination of these modalities. Above all, I value the creativity and growth potential of every human being. I believe that change is possible no matter how entrenched one may be in a given situation. I accept Aetna and Medicare. I provide invoices to submit for out-of-network benefits with other insurance companies. As I am aware of the prohibitive costs related to health care, I offer a sliding fee scale for those who cannot afford to pay in full. My office is located on the upper east side of Manhattan.

I am a NYS Licensed Master Social Worker working under the supervision of Aaron Skinner-Spain at NYC Affirmative Psychotherapy . As a Queer Woman of Color my goal is to assist in the creation of a world where LGBTQIA persons are affirmed and nurtured in in all aspects of their life. As I'm sure you've witnessed, our LGBTQIA populations as well as our People of Color are still vulnerable in the current socio-political climate, and so I focus my efforts on these two groups. With that said, I have experience in various other high need areas, i.e. Human Trafficking, Domestic Violence, Sexual Trauma, Undoing Institutional Racism, Latinos in the Race Conversation, and Immigration/Unaccompanied Children. I work with individuals who want to empower themselves in their daily lives to live authentically who they are, while creating an affirming and nurturing environment for themselves and others through understanding, acceptance, practice, and transformation. I work with individuals and groups dealing with LGBTQIA issues to gain Understanding and Acceptance to move forward and transform their lives in a healthy and nurturing way. I work with adolescent, young adults, adults and parents to help them overcome life's obstacles faced by people within the LGBTQIA spectrum, in individual and group settings. Providing Culturally Affirming Care to BI/POC in NYC.
Hi, I'm Bushra. I work primarily with Queer and BI/POC folks to navigate feelings of anxiety, grief, loneliness, guilt or shame. I also work with clients who are struggling with vulnerability in relationships, wanting to learn from attachment and trauma experiences, or just looking for a space to process emotions. I specialize in working with anxiety and depression as well as religious and attached-based trauma stemming from familial history. I center my therapeutic approach beyond the boundaries of a Eurocentric lens. I know that when you reach out for support, your main focus is receiving the help that you need. That is why I strive to provide a space where you can feel understood without having to over-explain your identity, your culture, or other parts of what make you, you. I believe that therapy can be one of many ways to heal from and disrupt generational patterns of harm and violence and would be honored to join you in that process. If you’d like to learn more about how we can work together, please reach out to schedule a free 15 minute consultation.
