Specializing in EMDR, SE, IFS, CT, Couples, & Group
I maintain a general private practice with a specialty in the treatment of trauma with offices in the Flatiron District of Manhattan and in Montclair, New Jersey. Whether you have experienced a major traumatic event, suffer from from acute or chronic anxiety and/or depression or whether you are feeling frustrated or stuck in repetitive patterns in your work or personal life, effective psychotherapy can help bring about empowerment, growth, and positive, lasting change. I am an active participant in each treatment and will work relationally with you to address your concerns. I also specialize in the use of more body-based modalities such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and SE (Somatic Experiencing). I have found, and current research is validating, how essential a healthy mind/body connection is to facilitating any real and lasting shifts from old habituated patterns to new, more adaptive ones, and I have found these modalities particularly effective in this regard.

Trauma-Informed Therapist
Ready to Take the Journey with You
I am a trauma informed therapist that uses a toolbox of methods to take the journey with you and help you heal the issues that are causing you pain. I am empathic, creative and I love to laugh. A good laugh heals a lot of hurts. — Madeleine L’Engle The bulk of my experience comes from working with vulnerable populations that carry a lot of trauma. That is the homeless population that includes LGBTIA, youth and adults with severe mental illness and/or substance use disorders. My approach is structured and relational. I transfer my trauma informed experience to this format to co-create with you the best plan to address your issues. You can expect me to be a guiding light on your journey that will provide safety and emotional support.

Understand yourself better, become more free and fulfilled
My practice is trauma-focused, psychodynamic and relational
As your therapist, first and foremost I will respect the courage of your decision to seek therapy and create a foundation of safety, acceptance, and collaboration. I strongly believe that symptom reduction (e.g., anxiety, panic, constant worrying, depression, high stress levels, complex PTSD), and an exploration of the root causes of your most distressing problems are both vital aspects of a helpful therapeutic experience. I foster a therapeutic relationship that honors my clients’ conscious minds as well as feelings, symptoms, and behaviors that they may find confusing and painful, but may be clues to presenting problems. I also consider my clients' current life situations holistically, collaborating with them to explore physical, nutritional, general life style, social support, and self-regulation issues to find areas of resilience as well as those that could be strengthened. Presently, I work with late teens and adults of all ages. I work with clients who struggle with symptoms which may be the aftermath of loss, abuse or other difficult experiences, or are simply perplexed with why they repeat distressing patterns which cause them pain. My clients may enter therapy to explore "why they have such difficulty regulating their emotions", or, "why they continue to pursue relationships that are ultimately painful", or, "why it's so hard to feel anything"; they may also enter therapy to receive assistance with specific issues such as life transitions, relationship difficulties, and work or academic problems. I also specialize in the impact of past and current interpersonal trauma or loss on parenting capacities, and assist my clients when these experiences interfere with being loving and supportive parents in the present. My work blends relational psychotherapeutic approaches, trauma-focused assessment and treatment, and psychoeducation for both clients and their families where appropriate. My trauma studies, which included EMDRIA-approved advanced EMDR training, as well as principles of Internal Family Systems and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, have solidified my longstanding belief that therapy must often go beyond talk and attend to messages from our physical selves that may provide clues to where we are most "stuck". While I have been trained in several modalities and my approach is eclectic, I will meet you where you are presently to address the problems that are most distressing to you.

I am a warm, engaging Clinical Psychologist. My orientation is cognitively-based, so therapy sessions are conversational, pragmatic, and focused primarily on the here-and-now. We work on setting therapeutic goals and collaborate on methods to attain them. In addition to my practice, I am active on the faculty at Weill-Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital. Anxiety is the body’s “hard-wired” false alarm. Defusing these alarms by facing dreaded fears is the central ingredient in overcoming shyness, panic attacks, or phobias. The art of treatment is knowing exactly how to fit the plan to the individual, and what procedures will best bring this about. In established relationships, people come to take each other for granted, which is the root of most other issues. The emphasis is on focusing upon what is or has been wonderful about the relationship, and acting on these strengths. How often are compliments, favors or gifts exchanged? This makes even significant conflict far easier to resolve! Activating oneself, self-care, exercise, taking pleasure and rediscovering a sense of accomplishment in the "little things" is a first and necessary step toward improvement. Surprisingly, progress becomes smoother once the inertia is overcome. Diets don't work. Individualized programs with a minimum of restriction and deprivation are motivating. Healthy foods, eaten frequently, and a positive sense of self go a long way. Moreover, bulimia is treatable, through carefully tailored food choices, mood management, and learning to tolerate a sense of being overwhelmingly full.

Therapy is a Guided Process of Self-Discovery
In my private practice I seek to create a warm and caring place for you to strengthen your self-confidence and develop skills that enhance your personal growth. I view therapy as a guided process of self-discovery. Whether it begins in response to a traumatic event or at a time when positive change is sought, old patterns of behavior and thought can stand in the way of healthy communication and exchange of feelings. Therapy provides access to methods that strengthen skills so that new and healthier thoughts, feelings and behaviors take the place of old unhealthy ones. The therapuetic approach is determined by your needs and is strength based. The process is guided by the belief that you already possess the ability to make things better. It takes courage to reach out to a professional therapist. My style is down-to-earth and emphasizes supportive listening so that you feel understood. I provide specific feedback throughout the process that helps you work toward your goals. In working together, we can discover the strategies that work best for you. Counseling services are available to individuals, couples, children, adolescents and families.

Are you seeking change, are you in crisis, does your life seem to be falling apart? I can help you ease the suffering or crisis that exists. I work through issues by understanding Relationship: relationship to the self, with your family, with your love relationships, relationship with friends and colleagues, and how to sustain these relationships. Another major life and soul issue is finding your purpose, and creating a vision of the future, which are the keynotes to happiness. I am informed by a number of theoretical traditions and techniques for change, i.e. positive psychology, psychoanalysis, transpersonal psychology (inner child archetype work), cognitive/behavioral psychology, psychosynthesis, and soul psychology (the Science of the Soul). Whatever the tradition, however, loving relationship is the focal point of the work.

The Emotional Challenges Raised by the Herpes Virus It is widely acknowledged that the emotional challenges of the herpes virus tend to be far more challenging than the physical ones. In addition to practical matters in the areas of health, dating, and sexual intimacy, the herpes virus, for many individuals, serves as a "trigger" or precipitant for additional emotional or psychological reactions and responses. These reactions or responses may be experienced as more or less disabling to those diagnosed and to those closest to them. Individual Counseling or Psychotherapy Individual counseling or psychotherapy is initially the service of choice during the early phases of coming to terms with the herpes virus and its emotional and social implications. This is often supplemented, however, by couples or family counseling or psychotherapy - to the degree that other individuals may also have been affected by the herpes diagnosis. Couples or Family Counseling or Psychotherapy Couples counseling or psychotherapy is often indicated to address issues regarding trust, sexual intimacy, choices regarding health consciousness and future safety, and, in some instances, real or perceived infidelity. Couples counseling or psychotherapy may be indicated for couples who have been together for long periods of time or for those who have come together more recently. An individual who has been diagnosed with the herpes virus may request couples services to assist in negotiating herpes-related issues with former partners or with new ones. Family counseling, including adolescents or children, may be indicated when an adolescent or child has been (regrettably) exposed to information regarding a parent or caregiver having received a herpes diagnosis - or when the individual who has been diagnosed is, themselves, an adolescent or child. Group Counseling or Psychotherapy Following initial stabilization, individuals who have been diagnosed with the herpes virus, or those who are closest to them, often receive great benefit from talking, within a safe and supportive environment, with others whose circumstances are similar. Workshops and Educational Seminars Workshops and educational seminars are offered to physician groups, mental health facilities, hospitals, and other interested community entities. Fees are negotiated based on the location and length of the workshop or semin

Are you looking for a therapist who will not only listen to you, but also speak and offer constructive feedback, instead of just sitting quietly in the background? For many people, it is important to find a therapist who will work to understand you and also actively help you learn about yourself and make changes that lead to a happier life. Some clients have told me that they tried psychotherapy in the past and shared much with the therapist, but ultimately left therapy feeling they received little in return. In my 12 years as a psychologist in Manhattan, I have always been straightforward and interactive with clients. At the same time, I am also a good listener and view my client as a partner in the therapeutic process. My goal—our goal—is to enhance your self-awareness and therefore enable you to become liberated from self-defeating patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The purpose of my work is to decrease your suffering while helping you fulfill your unique potential as an individual. I take what I do very seriously, but I also believe there is a place for humor in my work. I see no contradiction between sometimes being playful while always remaining an effective, serious, and focused healer. My main priority is to create a setting in which you feel understood and free to express and learn about yourself. Creating such an atmosphere always varies depending on the individual. This means that together, over time, we will “custom-fit” your therapy to facilitate your psychological growth.

Interactive & Solution-Focused Psychotherapy for Change
Imagine having the tools to explain clearly to your partner how you feel about something he/she said or didn't say… Imagine being able to speak to your children in a way that conveys how much you love them, but also firmly establishes limits and boundaries… Imagine the relief in being able to acknowledge, both to yourself and to another person in a safe, confidential therapeutic setting, feelings of hatred and rage toward someone in your life... Imagine being able to clearly and confidently state, "I want my future in 10 years to look like…." and having a mapped out plan to achieve it... We all have struggles. It takes courage to decide to take ourselves off "auto-pilot" and to confront and work through our problems. It takes courage to decide we are ready to look at ourselves, at our patterns of interacting in relationships and in decision-making. By deciding to look into therapy, you have taken the very difficult first step in this process…. I am a licensed psychologist practicing in Manhattan and in Great Neck, Long Island for 10+ years. I work with my patients using an interactive, supportive, and compassionate approach to help them to better understand and manage issues related to: Anxiety Depression Conflicted Relationships Parenting Struggles Work/Career Conflict Trauma Grief Stress/Anger Management Identity Issues Eating and Body Image We cannot erase negative past experiences. We can, however, work together to help you to better understand and to respond to these experiences in more constructive ways. Using a variety of solution-focused and insight-oriented therapeutic approaches, I will help you to become more aware of your long standing, negative behavioral patterns which are getting in your way of resolving challenges and of establishing and meeting your goals in life. In doing so, you will be better equipped to enact changes that will lead to greater happiness and a sense of well-being. Feel free to call me for a consultation.

I have focused the majority of my clinical career helping clients break the destructive, reactionary patterns of anger, to provide relief, and hope, for growth and change. I show clients healthy ways to voice their needs and wants and how to heal from past pain. I believe that given the safety of the therapeutic process, clients will emerge, and show their authentic selves’. It is through this process where couples learn to validate the others experience and truly hear one another’s needs and wants. Restored connection comes from becoming present: leaving the past behind and removing conditions of the future. Once clients can connect in this way, they use their own inherent strengths to make the changes they need. They become compassionate and responsive to the other. Not all couples are able to repair the damage caused by years of fighting and hurting one another. Sometimes the fear of being alone can keep couples stuck. Sometimes it is children that keep couples stuck. Sometimes the decision is made to separate, and divorce, but they are unable to do so in a constructive way. I help couples to move forward, toward separation/ divorce, in a very clear, conscious way.

We need to feel understood, safe, and supported to create life-long change, and in my practice I work to establish a respectful and warm relationship where this growth and development can occur. I believe each person is capable of tremendous change and view giving the gift of therapy as an honor. I find by exploring both the past and the present, clients are better able to recognize life patterns which may be affecting their relationships, career, and overall mental health. However, I also believe each person is unique and do not utilize a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Rather, I work with clients in a collaborative manner, and together we establish the direction and pace of our work. I work with individuals and couples from a variety of cultural, ethnic, and spiritual backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities. Overall, I think you will find my approach open, flexible, affirming, and engaging. Clients usually begin sessions with a variety of concerns such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem concerns, or problems with romantic and personal relationships. I also work with clients on issues of trauma and past abuse, body image and eating disorders, LGBTQI issues, and women's issues.

Spiritually Fluent Psychotherapist
What is your soul trying to tell you? The person you were a year ago, five years ago, ten years ago, is still inside of you. Each of these selves has a voice, an opinion, and as a result there is a lot of inner noise, which can drown out the voice of your soul, the divine spark within. Subscribing to the spiritual model, I view psychotherapy as a spiritual process. My role is to help you hear the voice of your soul so you can move from where you are to where you want to go. I incorporate insights and techniques from various spiritual traditions as well as from Transpersonal Psychology, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Twelve-Step Recovery, and Spiritual Self-Schema Therapy (SSST), in particular. The primary goal of SSST is to strengthen your spiritual self so healthier scripts (behaviors) can emerge in your life. As a psychotherapist, who is also an intuitive and a rabbi, I am fluent in spirituality, and can help you to create a spiritual practice to enhance your psychotherapy.

Are your relationships troubled and disappointing? Do your fears and worries get in the way of your being your most creative, productive self? Do you sometimes find yourself in the same situations or repeating behaviors over and over, and you don't know how to find your way out? Habitual ways of reacting and behaving often began as the means of coping with the stresses of childhood, but are no longer useful or appropriate. I would like to help you become "unstuck", become less anxious and worried, feel more comfortable with yourself and happier with your relationships and work. In sessions, I work to listen deeply and create an accepting atmosphere. There, you can become curious about your thoughts, feelings and actions, explore how your past is influencing your life today and confront the repeating patterns of emotional reaction and behavior that get in the way of your finding satisfaction in your relationships and work. My approach to therapy is eclectic with a strong psychodynamic base for understanding the problems that bring people to seek help. In addition to my training in psychology, my early training was as a dance/movement therapist and I continue to have an interest in the connection between mind, body and emotions and the nonverbal aspects of communication and relating.
