Jennifer Mounty is a caring, honest, empathetic therapist who is serious, but still has a sense of humor. She provides a safe, nonjudgmental and nurturing environment. Her areas of expertise include working with PTSD/Trauma, Depression, LGBTQ, Anxiety, HIV/AIDS, Relationships, Poor Self Image/Insecurity, Crisis, Guilt, Stress, Anger and Bereavement. Feeling able to connect and communicate is the foundation of any relationship. The need to feel heard and understood is universal to all people. The relationship between the client and the therapist is a very unique one. She believes that the therapeutic process is a collaborative one in which the client and the therapist both take active roles. Jennifer provides clients with a safe, nonjudgemental and nurturing environment in which the client is able to better understand who they are, what has brought them to this point in their life and where they would like to see themselves in the future. She is a graduate of New York University school of social work. Her experience as a therapist spans more than 20 years. Over the years she has worked with individuals from many cultural backgrounds and belief systems, and have addressed a wide variety of issues with her clients. Every person is an individual with different life experiences, values, thoughts, and feelings. With that said, her approach is Insight oriented psychodynamic psychotherapy based on the need of the particular person she is working with at the time and not on a specific theory or diagnosis.

Lead Psychotherapist and Clinical Manager
I am a NYS Licensed Master Social Worker working under the supervision of Aaron Skinner-Spain at NYC Affirmative Psychotherapy . As a Queer Woman of Color my goal is to assist in the creation of a world where LGBTQIA persons are affirmed and nurtured in in all aspects of their life. As I'm sure you've witnessed, our LGBTQIA populations as well as our People of Color are still vulnerable in the current socio-political climate, and so I focus my efforts on these two groups. With that said, I have experience in various other high need areas, i.e. Human Trafficking, Domestic Violence, Sexual Trauma, Undoing Institutional Racism, Latinos in the Race Conversation, and Immigration/Unaccompanied Children. I work with individuals who want to empower themselves in their daily lives to live authentically who they are, while creating an affirming and nurturing environment for themselves and others through understanding, acceptance, practice, and transformation. I work with individuals and groups dealing with LGBTQIA issues to gain Understanding and Acceptance to move forward and transform their lives in a healthy and nurturing way. I work with adolescent, young adults, adults and parents to help them overcome life's obstacles faced by people within the LGBTQIA spectrum, in individual and group settings. Addiction, Complex Trauma, Creative & Spiritual Expression
Healing from the wreckage of child abuse, psychological abuse and addictive disorders is an all encompassing process. I am deeply committed to working with addicts and survivors of complex trauma who are intent on moving beyond survival to a life of fully thriving. An inspired collaboration that sparks curiosity, humor and a powerful creative process of healing and self discovery holds great personal meaning and purpose. If you think outside the box and have the courage to take radical steps towards excavating difficult memories so as to actualize one's true self than I welcome the opportunity to guide you through this process. Drawing from an eclectic traditional and humanistic orientation and holistic and creative resources, we would work together to stabilize addictions, heal core traumatic wounds, dismantle and correct dysfunctional relational patterns, and manifest your unique potentials. Bodywork, psychopharmacology, creative and spiritual exploration may be integrated into the treatment process as warranted. I authored A Clinicians Journey from Complex Trauma to Thriving and co-authored a play performed for at-risk women and girls in the public sector of NYC. My journey of recovery was told through an animated film short by OC87 Recovery Diaries aired on PBS. I am a media resource for HARO & WMC SheSource.

"Therapist to the Therapy"
I am an empathic human being and a highly trained Certified Psychoanalyst, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Credentialed Alcoholism Counselor. I help others manage and resolve difficulties of the heart -- love, loss and work during significant life changes; for example, career change, death/illness in family, divorce, relapse with addiction(s), criminal arrests, loss of work, etc. I am committed to providing high-quality professional assessment and counseling/psychotherapy to people who have not accessed or have had prior unsatisfactory experiences with psychotherapy. I am also committed to travel the lengthy road of psychoanalysis with people who want to take this voyage. A second arm of my private practice is "Second Opinions": Some consumers are in a "stalemate" in their present "therapy"-- where there is a serious impasse and "work" is forfeited. I consult with individuals who can no longer productively work in their current therapy, oftentimes beginning to resolve major impasses. On occasion, the individual's therapist volunteers to be part of this process. In some cases, fruitful work is resumed. In other instances, a decision to leave the current therapy ensues. My interest in psychotherapy is borne by helping clients learn about themselves in seeing things differently—not changing their world, but having new eyes. By engaging in this process one finds obstacles in the past that impinge in reaching one’s full potential in the present. Psychotherapy is helpful in working through such issues by addressing the underlying emotions and bringing them into awareness. One may achieve a sense of inner peace and emotional freedom, making possible more fulfilling relationships with oneself and others. A third arm of my private practice is assistance to criminal defense attorneys specializing in high-profile white collar crime and DWI/DUIs. I have navigated the field of expert witness and prepared confidential psychiatric reports as well as prepleading memoranda to help individuals and their counsel have a win-win situation.
