Specializing in EMDR, SE, IFS, CT, Couples, & Group
I maintain a general private practice with a specialty in the treatment of trauma with offices in the Flatiron District of Manhattan and in Montclair, New Jersey. Whether you have experienced a major traumatic event, suffer from from acute or chronic anxiety and/or depression or whether you are feeling frustrated or stuck in repetitive patterns in your work or personal life, effective psychotherapy can help bring about empowerment, growth, and positive, lasting change. I am an active participant in each treatment and will work relationally with you to address your concerns. I also specialize in the use of more body-based modalities such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and SE (Somatic Experiencing). I have found, and current research is validating, how essential a healthy mind/body connection is to facilitating any real and lasting shifts from old habituated patterns to new, more adaptive ones, and I have found these modalities particularly effective in this regard.

Understand yourself better, become more free and fulfilled
My practice is trauma-focused, psychodynamic and relational
As your therapist, first and foremost I will respect the courage of your decision to seek therapy and create a foundation of safety, acceptance, and collaboration. I strongly believe that symptom reduction (e.g., anxiety, panic, constant worrying, depression, high stress levels, complex PTSD), and an exploration of the root causes of your most distressing problems are both vital aspects of a helpful therapeutic experience. I foster a therapeutic relationship that honors my clients’ conscious minds as well as feelings, symptoms, and behaviors that they may find confusing and painful, but may be clues to presenting problems. I also consider my clients' current life situations holistically, collaborating with them to explore physical, nutritional, general life style, social support, and self-regulation issues to find areas of resilience as well as those that could be strengthened. Presently, I work with late teens and adults of all ages. I work with clients who struggle with symptoms which may be the aftermath of loss, abuse or other difficult experiences, or are simply perplexed with why they repeat distressing patterns which cause them pain. My clients may enter therapy to explore "why they have such difficulty regulating their emotions", or, "why they continue to pursue relationships that are ultimately painful", or, "why it's so hard to feel anything"; they may also enter therapy to receive assistance with specific issues such as life transitions, relationship difficulties, and work or academic problems. I also specialize in the impact of past and current interpersonal trauma or loss on parenting capacities, and assist my clients when these experiences interfere with being loving and supportive parents in the present. My work blends relational psychotherapeutic approaches, trauma-focused assessment and treatment, and psychoeducation for both clients and their families where appropriate. My trauma studies, which included EMDRIA-approved advanced EMDR training, as well as principles of Internal Family Systems and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, have solidified my longstanding belief that therapy must often go beyond talk and attend to messages from our physical selves that may provide clues to where we are most "stuck". While I have been trained in several modalities and my approach is eclectic, I will meet you where you are presently to address the problems that are most distressing to you.

Addiction, Complex Trauma, Creative & Spiritual Expression
Healing from the wreckage of child abuse, psychological abuse and addictive disorders is an all encompassing process. I am deeply committed to working with addicts and survivors of complex trauma who are intent on moving beyond survival to a life of fully thriving. An inspired collaboration that sparks curiosity, humor and a powerful creative process of healing and self discovery holds great personal meaning and purpose. If you think outside the box and have the courage to take radical steps towards excavating difficult memories so as to actualize one's true self than I welcome the opportunity to guide you through this process. Drawing from an eclectic traditional and humanistic orientation and holistic and creative resources, we would work together to stabilize addictions, heal core traumatic wounds, dismantle and correct dysfunctional relational patterns, and manifest your unique potentials. Bodywork, psychopharmacology, creative and spiritual exploration may be integrated into the treatment process as warranted. I authored A Clinicians Journey from Complex Trauma to Thriving and co-authored a play performed for at-risk women and girls in the public sector of NYC. My journey of recovery was told through an animated film short by OC87 Recovery Diaries aired on PBS. I am a media resource for HARO & WMC SheSource.

We are all unique!
And have our own shine!
Sessions look different for everyone. I integrate different styles into my practice and use what may work best for you in a given session. My approach is mind-body based, so we don’t just look at your thoughts and feelings, but also look at how your body respond to our mental and emotional states (anger, sadness, anxiety, happiness…etc). A heavy portion of my work is bringing attention to how we relate to and understand our bodies. I also incorporate the creative/expressive arts (drawing, writing, movement) and this is considered another way to get in touch with parts of ourselves that we may not be aware of. Sometimes creative engagement provides an easier or more natural way to access our inner selves than just talking. I practice from a holistic approach that is social justice oriented, trauma informed, and culturally sensitive.

Don't just survive. Thrive!
What is holding you back? I work with young adults who don't know the answer to that question, who are struggling with life transitions, finding a purpose, and may be having a life "crisis." Often my clients are dealing with depression and anxiety related to difficulty making decisions, are stuck in an unsatisfying job, or are feeling confused and uncertain about the next step in their life. My goal is to help you understand what you want and what's holding you back. I help by exploring underlying resistance/barriers to accomplishing your goals. I help you face your fears by using a combination of CBT, to understand and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs, and EMDR which helps to work through and integrate important memories from your past to help you succeed. Together we can go deeper so you can see lasting change and discover your best self. Together we can work to figure out your purpose. Neurocounseling, Neurofeedback, Trauma and Sex issues
After a successful career as a banker/consultant, I became a Buddhist and started to understand life in all its dimensions, and our struggles. I decided to dedicate the rest of my life to help people finding joy and fulfillment. I have become fascinated and passionate about neuroscience and how it really informs our behavior, our emotional turmoils, our sense of self and identity, our conflicts with others. It's been really rewarding to find tools and to develop skills that transform the functioning of our brain to leave behind the struggle and open doors to peace and satisfaction. No more "coping" with all that makes us feel terrible! Healing is the option and with technology and the understanding of the nervous system, I apply techniques that regulate the nervous system, create new and better connections in the brain, and allow us to develop awareness and control. I also use techniques to reconsolidate the memories that have been lingering as ghosts and that are at the root of all that trigger us. Clients end up with a different perception, a more positive narrative, and a sense of agency that makes life easier.

Effective Psychotherapy
My specialty is work with writers, visual artists, and other creative professionals. My goal is for clients to feel comfortable talking about whatever is on their mind, in an environment that feels warm, genuine, caring, and spontaneous. During sessions, I listen intently as clients speak and ask questions that are illuminating. Together, we explore the past’s influence upon the present, and how each person’s individual psychology colors the way they see the world. My training in psychodynamic psychotherapy has proven to be effective in this regard. I successfully help people struggling with depression, anxiety, and/or problems with self-esteem. Other times, people come to me because they suspect they have a role in ‘what is' but can’t put a finger on how, and what to do to make things better. Psychological healing and growth can lead to all sorts of positive changes, not just relief from emotional pain. Ideally, relationships with important others improve, and vocations and avocations become a source of maximum fulfillment. I devote myself 100% towards this end for every person I see.

SLIDING SCALE PSYCHOTHERAPY
NYC AFFIRMATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY LCSW PLLC is a community focused sliding scale mental health practice in Manhattan. Our mission is simple: provide affirmative psychotherapy in a sustainable way to the community. By affirmative we mean that we do not view individuals from the perspective of being defective or needing to be fixed. We instead recognize the innate strengths that continue to allow people to function while enduring difficult life circumstances. Challenging childhoods and distressing adult experiences, coupled with the toxic impact of systemic oppression, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and xenophobia impact our mental health. Our goal is to fill a gap in mental health services provided to those that are historically marginalized and disenfranchised. We strive to be culturally aware and trauma-informed. Most importantly, we’re here to help you feel better and make change. We firmly believe that change is possible. Contact us today to get started.

Couples and Group Therapy
My specialties include: * Living with physical illness * Counseling the loved ones of people with illness * Couples/relationship therapy * Parenting issues As a therapist, my priority is to customize treatments for the individual and not force clients to conform to predetermined methods. I provide individual, couples, and group therapy, and if appropriate, can offer a combination of these modalities. Above all, I value the creativity and growth potential of every human being. I believe that change is possible no matter how entrenched one may be in a given situation. I accept Aetna and Medicare. I provide invoices to submit for out-of-network benefits with other insurance companies. As I am aware of the prohibitive costs related to health care, I offer a sliding fee scale for those who cannot afford to pay in full. My office is located in midtown Manhattan.

One of the most vital aspects of a successful therapeutic interaction is a genuine, empathetic, supportive relationship between the client and therapist. I focus on the client's strengths while also directing attention to those behaviors and thoughts that hold people back from achieving their goals. My aim is to provide a warm and nurturing environment where together we can work through and address your personal challenges, develop an understanding of the impact life experiences have on behavior and mood, utilize healthy, constructive coping skills, and empower real change in your life. I am a NYC licensed therapist with a practice dedicated to helping teens, adults, couples, and families living with a variety of issues including work, family, school and relationship stress, depression, anxiety/panic attacks, PTSD, substance abuse, eating disorders/food addiction, and bereavement, in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Lead Psychotherapist and Clinical Manager
I am a NYS Licensed Master Social Worker working under the supervision of Aaron Skinner-Spain at NYC Affirmative Psychotherapy . As a Queer Woman of Color my goal is to assist in the creation of a world where LGBTQIA persons are affirmed and nurtured in in all aspects of their life. As I'm sure you've witnessed, our LGBTQIA populations as well as our People of Color are still vulnerable in the current socio-political climate, and so I focus my efforts on these two groups. With that said, I have experience in various other high need areas, i.e. Human Trafficking, Domestic Violence, Sexual Trauma, Undoing Institutional Racism, Latinos in the Race Conversation, and Immigration/Unaccompanied Children. I work with individuals who want to empower themselves in their daily lives to live authentically who they are, while creating an affirming and nurturing environment for themselves and others through understanding, acceptance, practice, and transformation. I work with individuals and groups dealing with LGBTQIA issues to gain Understanding and Acceptance to move forward and transform their lives in a healthy and nurturing way. I work with adolescent, young adults, adults and parents to help them overcome life's obstacles faced by people within the LGBTQIA spectrum, in individual and group settings. Integrated Holistic Psychotherapy
Perhaps you are wanting a richer life, one with less struggle, more joy and peace. Perhaps you want to feel better about yourself or your relationships with others. My intention as a therapist is to help guide you to a deeper and more powerful understanding of yourself where you can find your authentic voice and learn to trust your own guidance. In addition to understanding your past and your present, I will listen for what's missing in your life, explore what you truly yearn for, and what is keeping you apart from that. I have extensive experience working with clients who are struggling in relationships with others, struggling being alone without partnership, have anxiety, depression, or past family pain and trauma. My work is based on the individual client, but there are a few modalities that inform my work. I approach psychotherapy from a in-depth approach and HOLISTIC framework, incorporating the body, mind, and spirit - bringing moment to moment awareness into our work together. I offer a FREE consultation on the phone for us to see if I can help with what you are needing.
