Psychotherapy for Feeling Better
Perhaps you want to expand your life, have richer and less problematic relationships, do work that is more gratifying and more engaging of your creativity. In short, you want a better life, and it's begun to feel as if time is passing you by. In therapy, you and I will work together so you may develop the courage to stand behind yourself, while also enjoying intimate relationships. We will find ways of listening to your deepest voice. The goal is to help you gain inner freedom--the freedom to be yourself, to love genuinely, and to do your best work. Incessant self-questioning and self-doubt can be exhausting. How do we change the attitudes and patterns that keep us stuck? Contemporary brain science has brought a lot to the therapy table. We now know how to teach people, through their own mental efforts, how to change the structure of their brains so that it can begin to function in new and healthier ways. Consider these negative, or self-doubting ideas: I'm too old to be single. I'm too self conscious to take a dance class (or work out in a gym). I've missed my chance in life. I don't look good enough to attract someone. These are false thoughts, and people spend years of their lives believing them. Even when they know they're dysfunctional and rob them of joy in life, they're convinced these negative ideas are impossible to get rid of. They're not. We have many new techniques and methodologies to help patients change their negative negative thought processes and begin feeling about themselves in entirely new ways. One method that I use with my patients is called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Big mouthful, I know, but it's actually a very straight forward way of helping people re-process their negative thinking. During EMDR therapy the patient attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. I use an audio device that produces pleasant tones (they go back and forth from the left ear to the right, via headphones.) The patient listens to the tones while thinking about a fear or an unpleasant or even frightening experience. Every minute or so I check in to see how the patient is feeling and what she or he is thinking. This way we can both monitor what's happening in the patient's mind . We can also introduce new and more positive ways of thinking about the material the brain is working on. In my practice I've found that EMDR can produce marked mental/emotional improvement in a relatively brief period of time. Sometimes the effects of trauma make it hard to trust others. Sometimes depression drains us of emotional energy. I am trained to treat trauma, anxiety and depression. The patient's ability to feel safe in my office comes first. We work together in an atmosphere of warmth and calm. This is the patient's journey. I will listen deeply to your words and feelings and perceptions, and help us toward a deeper understanding of who you are and where you want to be in life. Blending conventional and alternatives approaches to therapy, I draw on a variety of styles and techniques, incorporating what is most helpful to the individual. EMDR is one tool I use. I also teach patients special breathing techniques for calming anxiety and being able to regulate their emotions. Once they've learned different mindfulness techniques people become able to regulate overwhelming or flooding emotions, whether it be fear, or rage, or irritability, or sadness. It's very empowering when the brain can tame emotions.

This is an approach that taps into body awareness and mindfulness, which does not involve touch. Many of us need support to integrate our emotional, intellectual, & spiritual awareness with life dreams, sexual relationships, & day-to-day commitments. I help my clients recognize and work through repressed or misdirected anger & other destructive patterns which inhibit self growth, self respect, intimacy, spirituality, or commitment in relationships. I help both individuals and couples, including treating anxiety, menopause, post traumatic stress, dissociation and life changes. We may work intensively (at least two hours a week) for short, contracted periods of time such as 2 or 3 months. During that period of meeting a minimum of two days a week, the therapy has the opportunity to build in intensity and increase its effectiveness. After that much intense, introspective work, we take a break for integration of the work on your own. First we negotiate the time period of the break, and if needed, a re-starting time. This empowering time period gives my clients a personal space to assimilate the work and let any positive changes be felt and integrated. I find that for many people this is the fastest way through change and/or crisis. If needed, I am always available by phone or email during the hiatus in therapy. I use a variety of techniques including EMDR, shamanic journey, hypnosis and imagery, talk, homework --whatever works at the time. Many of these techniques, useful life tools, can be incorporated by my clients into their everyday lives. My work with adults includes individual therapy with men and women, couples counseling, marriage counseling, and family counseling. Sometimes individuals have needs related to work, stress, childhood issues, or relationships. I want to help. Life can be very difficult at times, and a caring therapist who listens and understands can be very important in helping with the changes that life sometimes requires of us. My hope is that ABC can be your oasis, a place where you find just what your heart needs to get you over the rough spots. I understand that in all relationships there is conflict. If you spend enough time with anyone, conflicts will naturally arise. I strive to help couples manage conflict in a manner that is much more positive than negative, and create a relationship of hope and freshness. If you are struggling in your relationship, maybe it’s time to spend some time with a trained, experienced counselor who will understand you and your loved one, and accept you where you are. Working with children: I meet with parents to assess their child's needs, make a plan to meet those needs, and provide therapy and support. That support includes communication with parents about the issues of parenting their unique child, The first session is for adults only. This is a time for your child’s therapist to hear your family's history, the unique story of your child, and to look together at what your child needs. It is not always necessary to know how your child has developed the emotional or behavioral issues he has, but it is important to discover ways to change or work with those issues. My commitment to parents is that I will be available for input. Being a parent is a tremendously difficult task. It is my hope that with counseling, guidance, and the right type of encouragement, parenting can be fun again for you.

My practice is a unique type of practice. I am a firm believer that 2 heads are better than one. So, I have decided to form a group network of therapists who collaborate together to provide the best services that we can offer! We do more than just one therapist can do alone. I hired a team of licensed therapists who could work together, each offering a unique perspective, training and expertise, enabling us all to be able to provide you with better trained, skilled and experienced clinicians because we cross-train each other! We discuss case issues and collaborate to offer superior services to our clientele! For example, I am the owner and director of LA Therapy Network. I am a feminist therapist, have special knowledge and experience helping women in transitions and transitional ages, am expert in the treatment of trauma and trauma related syndromes, and I have over 25 years working with alternative families, adolescents, women and various sexual and gender variant communities. I am especially knowledgeable about women's issues, sex crimes, impact of sudden deaths, teen issues and the GLBTQI communities. I am trained in the treatment of extreme forms of trauma and chronic, repeated abuse/violence. If you are a person dealing with rape, incest or sexual abuse/violence for example, I am ideal therapist to contact. However I don't have as much experience in the treatment of couples, but I do have 2 therapists who are excellent at treating couples! So, if you are a gay male couple who is seeking a sensitive therapist who has an expertise in trauma you may seek me out. I will consult with my colleagues who treat couples to ensure that I am providing you with better care. I have ready access to therapists who are more knowledgeable and thus you benefit! Whereas if I were in practice on my own, you'd be left to getting only my knowledge and you'd have to hope I knew enough about what I was doing. This is really the truth about individual private practices. A therapist only is as good as his/her training. And let’s face it, there is only so much one can focus their training on. Thus... a group network of therapists makes all of us better! I make sure that every therapist here has different training, expertise and approaches and understandings of how to help clients. That way we all benefit... and that means we can pass our skills as a team onto you! It’s like getting an entire skilled clinical team of experts in one therapist! In addition, let’s say there are situations where I want to refer you out to seek additional services. Often I am just going to refer you to another member of my team. That way you are going to get a better chance of us collaborating closely together! Not so if I were just working on my own. I'd send you out to another professional who is working solo as well. The truth is we won't talk a lot. That means you as the customer get less than ideal care. That’s the whole idea of why I formed LATN, LA Therapy Network!
