An Atmosphere of Change
Sometimes you discover that the path you find yourself on is not the same path you had set out on in the beginning. By participating in the psychotherapy process, you allow yourself to strengthen what is best in you, so that you may become more effective and satisfied in dealing with challenges you encounter in your life. I work with you to help you rediscover and nurture your innate strength and capabilities and to use your inner wisdom to guide your actions and sooth your emotions. Therapy can help you build on the capacities that you have already developed. It can also help you learn how to think about old problems in new ways and how to act differently when facing them. To the extent that it is necessary, therapy can allow you to take a broader look at what has gone wrong in your life and what improvements will be necessary for your circumstances or experiences to become more satisfying. Beyond looking at yourself clearly and mastering new skills, therapy will help you develop greater self-control and self-esteem. I offer counseling sessions for individuals, couples, and families.

Couples Counseling and Brief Therapy for Individuals
An Experienced, Supportive Therapist.
Do you have the relationship blues? Relationships are the basic fabric of our lives, but they can be so hard. You may be struggling with feeling distant or overly involved, with not knowing how to get your needs met or deal with others' needs. I can help you discover the underlying blocks to having a more fulfilling relationship. We’ll unpack your “personal baggage” from the past, improve your communication skills and dismantle your repetitive negative cycles of relating. I have worked with individuals and couples to improve relationships with self and other for 25 years. I can help you to overcome the stumbling blocks that keep you from having the satisfying relationship that you want. Couples usually come to therapy shut down, hurt, and/or angry. Through counseling you can open up and regain connection. I'll help you identify and change dysfunctional relationship patterns, learn new ways of communicating and understand how you are bringing some experiences of the past into the present. You'll build your communication and intimacy skills, deal with issues such as becoming parents, escalating arguments, infidelity, walls of silence, fear and anger. You will learn to see your relationship problems as about the dynamic between you, not one person's or the other's fault. BRIEF INDIVIDUAL THERAPY In brief (10 -12 weeks) individual therapy, you’ll gain insight by looking deep inside at what is blocking you or driving you in the wrong direction. We will strive towards self-acceptance, which also leads to better relationships to others. You need understanding of what is going wrong and why, in order to do it differently in the future. When you know where your problems are rooted and how they show up, you have the opportunity to change. With both couples and individuals, I work collaboratively to help you gain insight, to look deeply and understand what is blocking you or driving you in the wrong direction. You need understanding of what is going wrong and why, in order to do it differently. I am interactive, empathic, respectful, warm and at times, humorous. Experience is the best teacher, it's true. In 30 years of practice, I've gained much experience with clients of all ages, ethnicities, sexual preferences and class backgrounds. It's an honor to share in your journey and to have you courageously allow me into your private world.

Marriage & Family Therapist
Avon, CT 06001
At the foundation of my approach, I conceptualizes all individuals and their interactions with others (relationships) within the Systems framework. More simply, one cannot understand the dynamic of our struggles without exploring the familial, social, and cultural contexts. My work is based in Solution-Focused Therapy. This encourages dialogue to explore client's strengths, resources, and past successes. My collaborative approach fosters a sense of agency in clients, creating a co-constructed dialogue to explore and create realistic attainable therapeutic goals. This approach further emphasizes that clients best understand their unique circumstances. Therefore the role of therapist is to support a co-constructed dialogue around necessary changes in perceptions, thoughts, and behaviors. Lastly, I bring to the environment a compassionate and gentle stance, providing my clients with a warm and safe environment allowing more opportunity for clients to deeply explore their history and present struggles.

I'm an ordained clergywoman, have a Dr. of Ministry degree, endorsed by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a KY Licensed Pastoral Counselor, and credentialed a an ACPE Psychotherapist. I'm qualified to offer pastoral care, pastoral counseling and pastoral psychotherapy, and life coaching. Pastoral counseling calls for the integration of psychology and spirituality/religion when applicable to the Client. My own theology is moderate and leans to the left. While I'm a Christian attending Highland Baptist Church, I've also been trained to work with those of other faith traditions. In addition, Clients are accepted as they are; some Clients aren't in need of a spiritual/religious emphasis in their therapy, and I use a more secular approach with them. In addition to offering therapy, I also offer clinical supervision and train others in the art of pastoral counseling. Training is at the post-doctoral level and prepares those who desire licensure in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

My first question to any new client is, “How will you know when therapy is over?” This helps us both to define the goals of therapy. Together, we’ll focus on solutions to problems, and build on the strengths already there. I’ve been a therapist for children, adults, and families on the North Shore for ten years. My private practice is located in Glenview, Illinois and I work with families and individuals from the surrounding communities including Northbrook, Northfield, Deerfield, Glencoe, and Highland Park as well. I work with clients on issues including anxiety, trauma, divorce, separation, loss, depression, asperger’s, and other spectrum disorders. I provide a safe and relaxing environment that’s designed to help facilitate healing and change.

Effective Psychotherapy for Individuals
+ Partners (LGBTQ/ Open + Poly relationships welcome)
Although often difficult periods of change can give us opportunities to bring our lives more in alignment with what has true value and meaning for ourselves. I work with people during important transitions in their lives, for instance either starting or leaving a significant job or relationship. Communication, trust, intimacy and/ or sexual issues win your relationship? I am very comfortable working with traditional, open/ poly and queer relationships. I can assist you and your partner(s) to develop better communication and understanding around sensitive topics such as betrayal, intimacy and trust. I use an approach called EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) developed by Dr Sue Johnson. Clinical research shows that 90% of couples report significant improvement within 12-20 sessions of EFT. As former Director of the Eating Disorders program at Community Institute of San Rafael, Marin, I work with people who obsess that if they only had the perfect weight their lives would work out. So many of us through over dieting and body hatred have lost our connection to ourselves. The body instead of being home for our psyche/ spirit becomes the battleground. I work with clients to end their battle with food and their bodies. Look at my video describing the popular teleclass series for how to empower yourself during the holidays especially when dealing with stressors around food and family: "Empower Don't Devour!' Do you feel emotionally stuck in the past? You might be suffering from trauma. I help my clients move through past traumatic experiences using EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) This well researched method has fast and effective results in working with people suffering from trauma. I also help my clients release the cellular and muscular memory of the trauma (which is where trauma is often stored) using somatic psychotherapy. This is an approach that taps into body awareness and mindfulness, which does not involve touch. Finally I have found Depth Hypnosis to be a highly effective tool for helping my clients get out of stuck places and create the change they want.

Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. Stuck In Patterns That No Longer Serve You Well?
Why Aren't Things Working Out Like You Thought They Would?
If you can’t seem to make things work for you, and you want to talk to someone about how to change that, I can help. My job is to provide you with insight into how you get in your way of getting the things you want in life, so you can make changes that will serve you better than the same old same old way of doing things that keeps you stuck in patterns with undesirable outcomes. No doubt about it, change is hard. You’ve been who you are for a long time, and are used to navigating our difficult world in a particular way. The problem is, it just isn’t working. So it’s not surprising that you’re confused, conflicted, anxious or depressed. I have a flexible approach to working with people, since one size does not fit all. My twelve years of training and over a quarter century’s worth of experience working with people has paid off. I’ve learned to listen in a non-judgmental way, and to help you feel safe in revealing your fears, feelings and thoughts, all in your own time, at your own pace. There may be things you want to change about yourself, and other things you want to keep. You get to make all the decisions about who you are and want to be. I’m here to point out what might work better for you, but not to tell you what to do. There’s no magic that can turn things around instantly, but if you’re committed to the process you can make significant strides in a reasonable period of time. I invite you to come in for a no-obligation consultation to see if you feel comfortable talking with me about what in your life is not how you want it to be. If you choose not to continue with me, there's no charge for the consultation.

Are you feeling anxiety, stress, depression, or struggling in your relationships? Do you struggle with body image concerns or eating disorders? If so, you are not alone. These are often due to struggles of everyday life. Ask yourself the questions below and keep reading to see how together we can help you develop the skills you need to better cope with these issues. Do you worry more than most people? Have you had a panic attack? Do you obsess over certain things? Do you avoid certain situations due to anxiety? Does your anxiety prevent you from doing the things you want to do? Are you typically tense and on edge? Are you always on alert? If you have answered yes to these questions you may suffer from anxiety. As a therapist I can teach you ways to identify the thoughts, feelings and actions that maintain your anxiety. In therapy we will work on ways to change them. In addition I will teach you ways to cope with and manage your stress. Life is full of normal ups and downs. But if you have been feeling sad almost every day, most of the day for longer than 2 weeks and you are having difficulty with your normal life functioning, you may have symptoms of depression. Are you feeling sad and blue? Do you have difficulty finding enjoyment out of life? Have you had recent weight loss or weight gain? Are you having trouble with sleep? Loss of energy Difficulty concentrating or making decisions? Thoughts of suicide? If you have answered yes to several of these questions, and are feeling overwhelmed, it’s time to seek help. I will help you to understand the cause of your depression and teach you ways to improve your mood. Is your relationship in trouble? Does it lack passion? Is there constant conflict in your relationship? Do you have difficulty attaining or maintaining relationships? Are you having trouble with communication? Have you or your partner engaged in an affair? Do you seem to keep ending up with someone who ultimately disappoints you? If so, you may benefit from couples or marriage counseling. You may benefit from couples counseling if you answer yes to any of these questions. Together we can help you identify your sources of trouble. Then I can teach you the skills necessary to meet your relationship needs and improve intimacy. Do you feel depressed or uncomfortable with your appearance? Do you spend too much time worrying about what you look like? Do you replay the same negative thoughts about your body over and over in your mind? Do you evaluate your self-worth primarily by your appearance? Do you binge eat or purge? Do you severely restrict your calorie intake? Do you over exercise? Most of us have some minor dissatisfaction with the way we look. However, if you have answered yes to several of the above questions you may have poor body image or an eating disorder. When these concerns greatly impact our mood, life functioning, or intimacy in our relationships, it is time to seek help. I can help you understand the reasons behind your poor body image/eating disorder such as negative beliefs, media influences, family influences, interpersonal influences, or past abuse. Then we can work on ways to help you develop a healthy body image. Many people are reluctant to contact a therapist because they feel something needs to be seriously wrong with them. However, that is far from the truth. Most of the people who seek my services are well functioning adults that are going through a difficult time in life. If you are struggling within your relationships, having trouble dealing with strong emotions, or not functioning as well as you have in the past, you may find it beneficial to speak with a professional. Reaching out for help is actually a sign of strength.

Counseling for Individuals, Children, and Adolescents
Are you looking to make a positive change in your life but not quite sure what or how? Are there transitions in your life and you are unsure of how to cope with them? Do you have children and adolescents that you are finding hard to relate to? Do you feel stressed because of everything life throws at you? As your clinician, I want to work together to find a solution to these challenges. As humans, we should not have to deal with daily stress as a part of our lives and we shouldn’t have to figure it out all on our own. I specialize in working with children and adolescents. These two age populations are crucial in human development. During these stages of life, children experience many confusing emotions that relate to self identity, peer relationships, family relationships, life transitions and school. Working with children that range from 2-18 years old has allowed me to develop my knowledge with this delicate population. Working with children and adolescents, I have been trained to use different theoretical approaches, that which includes systemic, cognitive behavioral, postmodern, and humanistic. I also have experience working in the school setting providing counseling support and working within special education. My role is to provide support not only to the child, but also to the parents and family.

Overcome your struggles and live the life you want
In addition to helping clients overcome depression, anxiety, stress, and trauma, my subspecialties include supporting women and couples after the loss of their pregnancy or newborn to help them grieve, heal and find new meaning in their lives while treasuring and honoring their babies. Additionally, I enjoy working with women during pregnancy and following the birth of their child to help create a motherhood mindset to thrive in their new role and minimize risk factors for developing post partum mood disorders. I have supported men and women through their struggles for over 20 years so they could live their lives more fully and without the burden of past traumas constantly holding them back. My clients report that with treatment they feel more supported and validated, have confidence in using powerful tools to help them through the worst of times and ultimately learn to move forward in their lives. Please don’t hesitate to call so we can discuss how I can best serve you. My clientele is diverse in culture, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and family makeup.

As a psychotherapist serving Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach and Newport Coast I work with couples and individuals who are experiencing relationship problems, depression, anxiety, grief, effects of trauma, and marital issues. Change does not occur easily and yet I continue to be inspired each day by the courage and motivation of the people I work with to challenge patterns that repeatedly cause heartache and turmoil, the effects of trauma from the past, and the problematic issues of daily living. No matter what the issue is, the most important aspect of therapy is developing a comfortable and trusting relationship with your therapist. I work in a way that provides that for each of my patients. So, If you're tired of the way your life is going, or if there are certain aspects that you know need some attention, I'd like to talk with you to see how I may be able to support you through your therapeutic process. I am caring, understanding and easy to talk to, and I provide a safe, comfortable place for you. I specialize in helping people live more fulfilling lives in their family, relationships and worklife. I also help people with increasing their confidence, as well as working through the effects of trauma, and issues from the past.

Mediator,Parenting Coordinator/Facilitator, Anger Resolution
My work with adults includes individual therapy with men and women, couples counseling, marriage counseling, and family counseling. Sometimes individuals have needs related to work, stress, childhood issues, or relationships. I want to help. Life can be very difficult at times, and a caring therapist who listens and understands can be very important in helping with the changes that life sometimes requires of us. My hope is that ABC can be your oasis, a place where you find just what your heart needs to get you over the rough spots. I understand that in all relationships there is conflict. If you spend enough time with anyone, conflicts will naturally arise. I strive to help couples manage conflict in a manner that is much more positive than negative, and create a relationship of hope and freshness. If you are struggling in your relationship, maybe it’s time to spend some time with a trained, experienced counselor who will understand you and your loved one, and accept you where you are. Working with children: I meet with parents to assess their child's needs, make a plan to meet those needs, and provide therapy and support. That support includes communication with parents about the issues of parenting their unique child, The first session is for adults only. This is a time for your child’s therapist to hear your family's history, the unique story of your child, and to look together at what your child needs. It is not always necessary to know how your child has developed the emotional or behavioral issues he has, but it is important to discover ways to change or work with those issues. My commitment to parents is that I will be available for input. Being a parent is a tremendously difficult task. It is my hope that with counseling, guidance, and the right type of encouragement, parenting can be fun again for you.

Simple Solutions for Complicated Lives
Be Your Own Guru~Tuning In To Inner Clarity
Of course you are affected by your loved one's behaviors. How could you not be? It makes perfect sense that you would want to support and give to the dear ones in your life. But sometimes focusing on other people can become a problem. Especially if prioritizing others and trying to anticipate their needs before they've even voiced them has been the main source of one's validation, praise, even identity. This pattern can stand in the way of your success if it leaves no energy for your personal development. People can find themselves feeling lost and lonely in their own lives. Feeling purposeless, unmotivated, drifting, can be signs that something is wrong. Because in study after study, human beings have shown themselves to be overwhelmingly drawn to work they are passionate about, motivated to be part of making a difference, endlessly creative when given the right circumstances, wanting to make connections Often people don't talk about the way they are feeling because they're afraid of the stigma of DEPRESSION, what if that's what they're feeling? Perhaps, but most of the time there are simple Life Skills missing in these instances and with a few simple evidence-based tools in hand there can be major change. A person can see themselves having more success in communication in general, but specifically in negotiating what they need at their jobs to make it worthwhile for them to be there. They can see themselves suddenly not paralyzed when major things don't go as planned because they know how to talk themselves through it, who to reach out to for help, and how to take care of themselves until they feel better enough to make decisions from a healthier emotional/mental state. They are able to put into play a few regular practices that support self connection and develop emotional intelligence allowing them to think on their feet, experience and identify emotion in the moment and not have to act on it, see and articulate choice and so many other emotional intelligence capacities. If you are experiencing difficulty in personal relationships, finding it hard to function at work or in the rest of your life, experiencing either a confused, dissociated state or an extreme loss of motivation, struggles with self-esteem, a chronic self criticism, not acknowledging your successes or thinking you have none? You can stop feeling badly that you struggle with these things. They are often part of a set of behavioral symptoms that has points to a lack of Life Skills, one of those repurposed words, which means several things: *you aren't alone *you are ok *you can feel better because there is help, support, and these skills can be learned There's no reason to struggle alone with this any longer. I offer free consultations so you can call and schedule one today. 415-378-7506

I believe that psychotherapy is a place where, in a safe and confidential environment, you can talk about your most personal thoughts, feelings and life experiences. For a variety of reasons and at different ages, a person may find themselves suffering from painful feelings and exhibiting behaviors that negatively impact some or many aspects of their life and even their health. The psychotherapeutic process provides an opportunity to explore and understand these feelings and experiences through a clearer lens. Ultimately, this brings about positive changes in the way you see yourself, and choices you make. You can learn healthy coping mechanisms, improve communication and have more control over those things that undermine the success of your life, whether you are a teenager or a senior. Of course, there are a variety of reasons and stages of life that brings a person to therapy. Whatever it is, the work will lead to a relationship with yourself that is more loving, honest, constructive and nurturing. No matter what your age, that relationship is essential to living an authentic, healthy and rewarding life. Sometimes, life presents you with situations and problems that seem more than you can handle. Relationship difficulties, parenting problems or problems with parents or peers, health issues, loss, or a dissatisfaction with life can get expressed in a lack of energy, depression, sadness, or anger. Therapy can provide a healing pathway. Working with a qualified and experienced therapist can help you change your life. As difficult as it often is to take the first step, once you do, you are likely to find there can be great relief in reaching out and sharing your story.
