An Atmosphere of Change
Sometimes you discover that the path you find yourself on is not the same path you had set out on in the beginning. By participating in the psychotherapy process, you allow yourself to strengthen what is best in you, so that you may become more effective and satisfied in dealing with challenges you encounter in your life. I work with you to help you rediscover and nurture your innate strength and capabilities and to use your inner wisdom to guide your actions and sooth your emotions. Therapy can help you build on the capacities that you have already developed. It can also help you learn how to think about old problems in new ways and how to act differently when facing them. To the extent that it is necessary, therapy can allow you to take a broader look at what has gone wrong in your life and what improvements will be necessary for your circumstances or experiences to become more satisfying. Beyond looking at yourself clearly and mastering new skills, therapy will help you develop greater self-control and self-esteem. I offer counseling sessions for individuals, couples, and families.

Psychotherapy
“If we want to help our clients to realize themselves as more complete true human beings, we must ourselves have the courage to risk the dangers of being human.” –Laura Perls- If your life isn’t what you’d like it to be, if you are burdened by feelings of unhappiness, or if you are just not happy, then therapy can help you to feel more supported and better understood. My approach is to provide you with a safe and respectful environment where you can be yourself, your true self. Therapy is about growth and realizing your idea of a complete and satisfying life. Get to know the many different sides of yourself, learn to appreciate all of yourself and explore the risk of taking new steps in order to heal old wounds. I specialize in working with LGBTQ youth and adults, people in the coming out process and those who are dealing with difficulties with their family due to the different choices they made in their life’s. My goal is to help you face the pain and struggles you hide from. Let’s address them together and start the process towards a life full of abundant happiness you deserve. I am fluent in English, German, and Dutch. Free 20 minute initial consultation upon request.

I specialize in and successfully work with individuals and couples who want to explore and make changes in areas such as depression, anxiety, addiction and recovery, low self-esteem, relationships, and improving communication. Psychotherapy is a collaboration between the client and the therapist, working together to help you achieve your goals. Individual Psychotherapy My clients are usually adults who are intelligent, questioning, and insightful. They have many strengths and skills but find themselves either facing things they don't want (worry, depression, communication problems) or feeling blocked in achieving things they do want (career change, a good relationship, more self-confidence). We will work together to understand what is going on, how your present situation may have gotten to where it is now, and how you would like to see things evolve in the future. Patterns that were useful or even necessary in earlier parts of your life may be getting your way now. Sometimes the simple act of hearing yourself discuss your thoughts and concerns with a caring, nonjudgmental professional helps untangle some "emotional knots." People are capable of amazing changes and accomplishments; counseling can help you realize the best in yourself. An initial assessment appointment is about 90 minutes long; other counseling sessions after that are 45 to 50 minutes each. Weekly appointments are a good idea, at least in the beginning, in order to build a therapeutic relationship and get some momentum on dealing with your issues. How long a course of counseling lasts depends on a number of factors including how you perceive the problems, their severity and length of persistence, and even such outside elements as childcare or work schedules. A person often "knows" when a problem or situation has been resolved. Couples Counseling Couples who love and care about each other can sometimes experience difficulties. You might realize that it's harder to talk to your partner about your real feelings or concerns. You might notice that arguments (often about the same topics) are getting more intense or happening more frequently. You may be feeling that life events (work-related stress, a new baby, an illness,) have overwhelmed your relationship. You may have tried to work things out together on your own; but the changes don't seem to last very long, or you both end up more angry and frustrated than if you didn't try at all. You might be married, living together, dating, or deciding whether making a serious commitment is what you are looking for. This is where couples counseling can make a difference. With the guidance of a warm, genuine, and experienced counselor, you can develop improved communication skills, learn to set necessary boundaries, learn to clarify your needs & healthy ways to meet them, and practice expressing difficult thoughts and feelings in less explosive ways. You'll be reminded and encouraged about the strengths and positive qualities that brought the two of you together in the first place. The supportive counseling environment makes dealing with the problematic parts more tolerable. Couples counseling will also explore each person's understanding of the family they grew up in and how their familial experiences and expectations mesh with those of their partner. Very frequently, some significant issues are still quite alive in the current relationship; having a map of the "minefields" can help you work things out before they get out of control. An initial couples assessment is about 90 minutes long; subsequent sessions are one hour. The couple and counselor work together to plan the course of the treatment and the goals.

Counseling for anxiety, OCD, substance abuse, depression
In a comfortable and supportive atmosphere, I offer a highly personalized approach tailored to your needs to help you attain the personal growth you're striving for. I employ several different therapeutic models depending on the type of difficulties you are having. Most of my experience is in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. Each of these types of therapy have been evaluated and proven to be effective for a variety of problems. Research has consistently shown that the most important element in successful therapy is the working relationship between the client and the therapist. Connecting with you and establishing a solid foundation is my first and most important priority. Some of my passions include helping people deal with the impact of past traumas on their present lives, treating depression, working with clients who have trouble finding a sense of direction in their lives, and supporting the LGBTQ community. My clients have found my approach to be warm and non-judgmental; while also being honest and straight-forward. As a therapist, you will most likely find me to be, more than anything, a real person who does her best to connect with you. For fun, I enjoy anything outdoors...camping, fly-fishing, hiking...you name it. I'm also an avid reader and lover of both eating and cooking good food.

I believe that psychotherapy is a place where, in a safe and confidential environment, you can talk about your most personal thoughts, feelings and life experiences. For a variety of reasons and at different ages, a person may find themselves suffering from painful feelings and exhibiting behaviors that negatively impact some or many aspects of their life and even their health. The psychotherapeutic process provides an opportunity to explore and understand these feelings and experiences through a clearer lens. Ultimately, this brings about positive changes in the way you see yourself, and choices you make. You can learn healthy coping mechanisms, improve communication and have more control over those things that undermine the success of your life, whether you are a teenager or a senior. Of course, there are a variety of reasons and stages of life that brings a person to therapy. Whatever it is, the work will lead to a relationship with yourself that is more loving, honest, constructive and nurturing. No matter what your age, that relationship is essential to living an authentic, healthy and rewarding life. Sometimes, life presents you with situations and problems that seem more than you can handle. Relationship difficulties, parenting problems or problems with parents or peers, health issues, loss, or a dissatisfaction with life can get expressed in a lack of energy, depression, sadness, or anger. Therapy can provide a healing pathway. Working with a qualified and experienced therapist can help you change your life. As difficult as it often is to take the first step, once you do, you are likely to find there can be great relief in reaching out and sharing your story.

Marriage and Family Therapy
Resolve Problems and Enhance Your Relationships
I am a marriage and family therapist who actually specializes in marriage and families. I work with individuals, couples and families--children, young adults, adults and seniors--who want to resolve problems and enhance their relationships. Even in the best circumstances we all face the challenges that everyday living brings....work and school problems, parenting challenges, financial concerns, fidelity and trust and day-to-day stress. Working from a perspective that each person knows himself or herself best, we work as a team to uncover your strengths and use them to reach your goaIs. I have been in practice for over 30 years. Originally I worked with children and adolescents and found that soon after the children completed therapy, their parents would call regarding their relationship. Many called because they felt comfortable coming to me with their issues after seeing the changes in their children. After about 10 years I began seeing the teenage and young adult children of original couples with whom I worked. They, in turn, recommended their friends and associates. A large part of my practice now is the people between16 and 40. Still, many of my clients are couples who have issues with fidelity, feel angry or resentful, or have lost the "spark"and want to try to improve their relationship and save their marriage. Most want to do more than just"save it" and we work together to enhance their ability to empathize with each other and develop skills to interact with each other in more respectful and loving ways. My practice uses a variety of modalities including cognitive-behavioral, narrative, humanistic and psychodynamic as well as guided imagery, meditation, role play and other methods based on what works best with each particular client.

Are You Feeling Stuck? Anxious? Depressed?
Therapy for Individuals, Couples & Families
The saying "An examined life is not worth living" always comes to mind when I encounter an individual who is mired down in problems and unable to find happiness. That you are visiting this page tells me you have already embarked on a path to address the issues that are stopping you from moving forward. In a warm and safe environment I can provide you with the tools you need to indeed live the life you wish to live. Together we can explore and uncover the obstacles that prevent you from enjoying the relationships you deserve along with the dreams and goals you want to pursue. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY While I use many different approaches in therapy, including talk therapy, I work through an attachment lens which means that sometimes it is important to explore one's past to see how it affects you in the present. I believe everyone benefits from finding new options to address previously self-defeating patterns. I also like to incorporate mindfulness practices into my therapeutic work. My clients have observed that their overall functioning has dramatically improved by practicing mindfulness in their daily lives. COUPLES When two individuals come together I am often reminded of the expression, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." Relationships require nurturing and attention and sometimes with the best of intentions, couples drift apart or arrive at an impasse. I am marriage friendly, LGBTQ friendly, and believe that most couples have the ability to work out their dissatisfaction with one another. Much of the time, with commitment and a desire to rekindle long-lost feelings, couples, with the help of therapy, can master the communications skills they need to find emotional safety and connection in their relationship.

Effective Psychotherapy for Individuals
+ Partners (LGBTQ/ Open + Poly relationships welcome)
Although often difficult periods of change can give us opportunities to bring our lives more in alignment with what has true value and meaning for ourselves. I work with people during important transitions in their lives, for instance either starting or leaving a significant job or relationship. Communication, trust, intimacy and/ or sexual issues win your relationship? I am very comfortable working with traditional, open/ poly and queer relationships. I can assist you and your partner(s) to develop better communication and understanding around sensitive topics such as betrayal, intimacy and trust. I use an approach called EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) developed by Dr Sue Johnson. Clinical research shows that 90% of couples report significant improvement within 12-20 sessions of EFT. As former Director of the Eating Disorders program at Community Institute of San Rafael, Marin, I work with people who obsess that if they only had the perfect weight their lives would work out. So many of us through over dieting and body hatred have lost our connection to ourselves. The body instead of being home for our psyche/ spirit becomes the battleground. I work with clients to end their battle with food and their bodies. Look at my video describing the popular teleclass series for how to empower yourself during the holidays especially when dealing with stressors around food and family: "Empower Don't Devour!' Do you feel emotionally stuck in the past? You might be suffering from trauma. I help my clients move through past traumatic experiences using EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) This well researched method has fast and effective results in working with people suffering from trauma. I also help my clients release the cellular and muscular memory of the trauma (which is where trauma is often stored) using somatic psychotherapy. This is an approach that taps into body awareness and mindfulness, which does not involve touch. Finally I have found Depth Hypnosis to be a highly effective tool for helping my clients get out of stuck places and create the change they want.

If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes!
Taking the first step...
I believe in taking a holistic approach to counseling. Since most issues are interrelated, positive change in one area begins a ripple effect of change in others. My training and over 25 years of clinical experience is diverse, addressing issues related to relationship problems, anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma, grief and stress. In addition, I offer two women's groups and an individualized Anger Management Program. Since 1995, I have been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma. Courses taught include, Understanding Addictions, Stress Management, Chemical Dependency, Human Emotions and Advanced Counseling Skills. One of the most effective interventions I use is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, (EMDR). It is enormously successful in treating PTSD and is often used with complicated grief issues. EMDR came to Oklahoma in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, on April 19, 1995. This tragedy resulted in widespread trauma and grief, throughout the state. A team of volunteer EMDR therapists immediately flew into Oklahoma City and worked tirelessly for several months, providing this therapy to victims, survivors and rescue workers. I was fortunate to have been in the group of 300 licensed therapists who were trained to carry on their work. As a result, I became certified in EMDR and have incorporated it into my therapy practice. It has allowed my clients to more effectively cope with and resolve a wide variety of issues and problems affecting their quality of life. EMDR continues to be one of the fastest, most valuable resources for individual healing. I am a Licensed Marital & Family Therapist, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Master Addictions Counselor and a Certified EMDR Therapist. My practice utilizes cognitive-behavioral therapy, showing the connection between thoughts, feelings and behavior. I also offer assertiveness and stress management training, in addition to chemical dependency counseling and chemical dependency interventions.

Pastoral counseling calls for the integration of psychology and spirituality/religion when applicable to the Client. My own theology is moderate and leans to the left. While I'm a Christian attending Highland Baptist Church, I've also been trained to work with those of other faith traditions. In addition, Clients are accepted as they are; some Clients aren't in need of a spiritual/religious emphasis in their therapy, and I use a more secular approach with them. In addition to offering therapy, I also offer clinical supervision and train others in the art of pastoral counseling. Training is at the post-doctoral level and prepares those who desire licensure in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Expert Counseling and Psychotherapy
Since my training at Columbia University I have enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a psychotherapist. I specialize in helping couples, adults, and adolescents identify and change destructive behaviors, build better relationships and achieve their potential. I work with a diverse clientele regardless of cultural background or sexual orientation. I do both short and long term therapy in a nurturing, nonjudgmental environment adapting my treatment to the client’s needs. I am certified in EMDR, a time efficient method for treating post traumatic stress disorder and other issues. In general my approach is psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral. I am particularly adept in dealing with relationship problems, depression, grief, anxiety and trauma related issues. In addition to my private practice I am a clinical supervisor and have supervised experienced therapists in family service, eating disorders, addictions, DUI and probation programs. I also have extensive experience in parent training. I empower people to make changes when they feel stuck and dissatisfied with their life. I believe every human being can confront and overcome emotional blocks to achieve their goals and live a meaningful life.

Simple Solutions for Complicated Lives
Be Your Own Guru~Tuning In To Inner Clarity
Of course you are affected by your loved one's behaviors. How could you not be? It makes perfect sense that you would want to support and give to the dear ones in your life. But sometimes focusing on other people can become a problem. Especially if prioritizing others and trying to anticipate their needs before they've even voiced them has been the main source of one's validation, praise, even identity. This pattern can stand in the way of your success if it leaves no energy for your personal development. People can find themselves feeling lost and lonely in their own lives. Feeling purposeless, unmotivated, drifting, can be signs that something is wrong. Because in study after study, human beings have shown themselves to be overwhelmingly drawn to work they are passionate about, motivated to be part of making a difference, endlessly creative when given the right circumstances, wanting to make connections Often people don't talk about the way they are feeling because they're afraid of the stigma of DEPRESSION, what if that's what they're feeling? Perhaps, but most of the time there are simple Life Skills missing in these instances and with a few simple evidence-based tools in hand there can be major change. A person can see themselves having more success in communication in general, but specifically in negotiating what they need at their jobs to make it worthwhile for them to be there. They can see themselves suddenly not paralyzed when major things don't go as planned because they know how to talk themselves through it, who to reach out to for help, and how to take care of themselves until they feel better enough to make decisions from a healthier emotional/mental state. They are able to put into play a few regular practices that support self connection and develop emotional intelligence allowing them to think on their feet, experience and identify emotion in the moment and not have to act on it, see and articulate choice and so many other emotional intelligence capacities. If you are experiencing difficulty in personal relationships, finding it hard to function at work or in the rest of your life, experiencing either a confused, dissociated state or an extreme loss of motivation, struggles with self-esteem, a chronic self criticism, not acknowledging your successes or thinking you have none? You can stop feeling badly that you struggle with these things. They are often part of a set of behavioral symptoms that has points to a lack of Life Skills, one of those repurposed words, which means several things: *you aren't alone *you are ok *you can feel better because there is help, support, and these skills can be learned There's no reason to struggle alone with this any longer. I offer free consultations so you can call and schedule one today. 415-378-7506

My first question to any new client is, “How will you know when therapy is over?” This helps us both to define the goals of therapy. My private practice is located in Glenview, Illinois and I work with families and individuals from the surrounding communities including Northbrook, Northfield, Deerfield, Glencoe, and Highland Park as well. At the foundation of my approach, I conceptualizes all individuals and their interactions with others (relationships) within the Systems framework. More simply, one cannot understand the dynamic of our struggles without exploring the familial, social, and cultural contexts. My work is based in Solution-Focused Therapy. This encourages dialogue to explore client's strengths, resources, and past successes. My collaborative approach fosters a sense of agency in clients, creating a co-constructed dialogue to explore and create realistic attainable therapeutic goals. This approach further emphasizes that clients best understand their unique circumstances. Therefore the role of therapist is to support a co-constructed dialogue around necessary changes in perceptions, thoughts, and behaviors. Lastly, I bring to the environment a compassionate and gentle stance, providing my clients with a warm and safe environment allowing more opportunity for clients to deeply explore their history and present struggles.

Counseling for Individuals, Couples, and Adolescents
Individuals, Many specialities.
I counsel individuals, couples, families, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Chapline is highly skilled at the use of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Clinical Hypnotherapy, Ego State therapy and psycho-education. She will use her vast repertoire of additional modalities based upon a particular client's need. I enjoy my work! I love the field of psychology because it is so vast. I care about helping people move toward psychological wellness and motivating and inspiring them to reach goals. I consider therapy to be a valuable component of the walk of one's inner journey toward self completion. Psycho-education permits understanding of the origin of problematic symptoms, and how an individual became well. This type of knowledge creates skills that are transferable across life events and time.

Counseling for Individuals, Children, and Adolescents
Are you looking to make a positive change in your life but not quite sure what or how? Are there transitions in your life and you are unsure of how to cope with them? Do you have children and adolescents that you are finding hard to relate to? Do you feel stressed because of everything life throws at you? As your clinician, I want to work together to find a solution to these challenges. As humans, we should not have to deal with daily stress as a part of our lives and we shouldn’t have to figure it out all on our own. I specialize in working with children and adolescents. These two age populations are crucial in human development. During these stages of life, children experience many confusing emotions that relate to self identity, peer relationships, family relationships, life transitions and school. Working with children that range from 2-18 years old has allowed me to develop my knowledge with this delicate population. Working with children and adolescents, I have been trained to use different theoretical approaches, that which includes systemic, cognitive behavioral, postmodern, and humanistic. I also have experience working in the school setting providing counseling support and working within special education. My role is to provide support not only to the child, but also to the parents and family.

I have worked many years with adolescents in public education. I have had great success with them because I understand what it is like being an adolescent today. I also have an extensive background in substance abuse. I am a licensed professional counselor offering individualized services including consultation, skill development, problem solving, and individual therapy. I do substance abuse evaluations with recommendations if requested.I have 20 years working with adolescents and adults. I have expertise in substance abuse, grief issues, and gender identity. Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.
