At the foundation of my approach, I conceptualizes all individuals and their interactions with others (relationships) within the Systems framework. More simply, one cannot understand the dynamic of our struggles without exploring the familial, social, and cultural contexts. My work is based in Solution-Focused Therapy. This encourages dialogue to explore client's strengths, resources, and past successes. My collaborative approach fosters a sense of agency in clients, creating a co-constructed dialogue to explore and create realistic attainable therapeutic goals. This approach further emphasizes that clients best understand their unique circumstances. Therefore the role of therapist is to support a co-constructed dialogue around necessary changes in perceptions, thoughts, and behaviors. Lastly, I bring to the environment a compassionate and gentle stance, providing my clients with a warm and safe environment allowing more opportunity for clients to deeply explore their history and present struggles.

Specializing in EMDR, SE, IFS, CT, Couples, & Group
I maintain a general private practice with a specialty in the treatment of trauma with offices in the Flatiron District of Manhattan and in Montclair, New Jersey. Whether you have experienced a major traumatic event, suffer from from acute or chronic anxiety and/or depression or whether you are feeling frustrated or stuck in repetitive patterns in your work or personal life, effective psychotherapy can help bring about empowerment, growth, and positive, lasting change. I am an active participant in each treatment and will work relationally with you to address your concerns. I also specialize in the use of more body-based modalities such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and SE (Somatic Experiencing). I have found, and current research is validating, how essential a healthy mind/body connection is to facilitating any real and lasting shifts from old habituated patterns to new, more adaptive ones, and I have found these modalities particularly effective in this regard.

Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. Sierra Family Therapy
Mental Health Counselor / Therapist
Grass Valley, CA 95945
Families, Marriage and Inidivual Therapy
Providing compassionate and strength based therapy for couples, individuals, teens, children and families. Sierra's approach centers much around EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED COUPLES THERAPY and IMAGO. Both of these concepts are based on attachement theory. We work with couples to discover the reasons behind their reactions (anger, fear, distance, etc) and discover more effective ways to meet each others needs through positive emotional attachment (non-violent communication, re-attachment, growing together and helping one another discover and heal unmet needs and previous emotional wounds). Sierra offers family therapy both in home and in our office in Grass Valley, Nevada City, Auburn, Colfax and Roseville. Family systems counseling suggests that therapy based on family-systems principles is more likely to produce desired lasting change than working solely with individuals. The goal of family therapy is for family members to understand and accept their individual responsibility in the emotional functioning of the family unit.

We need to feel understood, safe, and supported to create life-long change, and in my practice I work to establish a respectful and warm relationship where this growth and development can occur. I believe each person is capable of tremendous change and view giving the gift of therapy as an honor. I find by exploring both the past and the present, clients are better able to recognize life patterns which may be affecting their relationships, career, and overall mental health. However, I also believe each person is unique and do not utilize a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Rather, I work with clients in a collaborative manner, and together we establish the direction and pace of our work. I work with individuals and couples from a variety of cultural, ethnic, and spiritual backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities. Overall, I think you will find my approach open, flexible, affirming, and engaging. Clients usually begin sessions with a variety of concerns such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem concerns, or problems with romantic and personal relationships. I also work with clients on issues of trauma and past abuse, body image and eating disorders, LGBTQI issues, and women's issues.

I often tell my clients they are doing a nice thing for themselves by going to psychotherapy. One does not need to wait for a difficulty to arise as a motivator to enter therapy. Participating in therapy sessions can bring greater in-depth personal exploration and better, more fulfilling relationships with others. My practice is composed mainly of adults seeking help with anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties including sexual issues and dysfunctions. The therapeutic approach I frequently use is cognitive-behavioral which focuses on anxiety/depression and relational/interpersonal which focuses on creating healthy relationship dynamics. I actively work with clients who are facilitators of their change. What is unique about my practice is that I bring a wealth of personal experiences as an individual with a hearing loss and have had anxiety issues. Having these challenges ground me to be a more sensitive and caring person with an enhanced understanding of anyone who steps into my office.

Specializing in queer identity and consensual nonmonogamy
When we understand ourselves and our desires, we access our power. I help you learn what you want, and clear the obstacles out of your way. When the unconscious dictates our thoughts and behaviors, we are adrift in its hidden urges, fears, and conditioning. Getting to know ourselves brings these mysterious workings into the light, so that we can choose what we do with them. If you're feeling lost at sea, I can help you find your boat and compass. Once you're back at the helm, riding out the waves can be exhilarating! Gender and Sexual Expansion I know that in navigating the world as a queer person, it can be challenging to find the right fit in a therapist. Whether you identify as non-binary, trans, genderfluid or anywhere on the spectrum of non-heteronormativity, it's critical to talk with someone who gets it. When it's time to further explore a facet of your identity, sexuality or relationship, you can feel safe expressing yourself with me as you are without your therapist assigning your struggles to your lifestyle or identity. I counsel sex workers, individuals in polyamorous or other consensual non-monogamous relationships, and participants in kink or BDSM lifestyles. When you walk into my office, you can rest assured that you will be met with compassion and non-judgement.

Therapy Is Not a Lifestyle.
Therapy is not a lifestyle, it is a process. Dealing with the difficulties of life can cause distressing feelings which can interfere with your relationships and general well being. My hope is that when confronted by such distress, our work together will serve to guide you through these obstacles. Used as a tool, therapy can restore or discover your sense of balance. As your therapist, my role is to assist you in utilizing your strengths to attain that goal. Through this process, we will identify the influences or circumstances that decrease your satisfaction and discover the tools needed to overcome them. No matter if you're experiencing anxiety, depression, or general dissatisfaction, we will work as a team to identify your goals and use your strengths to achieve them. We will create the tools that work best for you to maintain your balance and utilize should you experience distress in the future. Using brief-solution focused therapy or an insight-oriented long term approach, my clients have overcome grief/loss, identified strategies for coping in difficult relationships, developed parenting skills, resolved childhood trauma, eliminated self destructive behaviors and navigated phase of life difficulties. We will apply the approach that best suits you.

Hello! I guess if you are reading this, you are looking for someone to work with and considering whether psychotherapy or counselling might be something for you... Psychotherapy can help you to understand some of the patterns, dynamics and relationships during your life that may be affecting the way you feel and live your life now. It provides a safe, confidential place in which to explore the things that matter to you and what helps to give you a sense of meaning, hope and purpose - and the things that get in the way of this when things are difficult. It usually involves once-weekly face-to-face meetings, although sometimes more often, depending on what is needed. I have experience of working with a wide range of issues and disciplines in different settings and am open to finding a language and way of working with each person I meet which is fitting for them. If you would like to arrange a time to have a chat on the phone or to arrange a free one-off meeting to see how we get on, do please be in touch. I would be delighted to meet you.

Attuned and Compassionate Psychotherapy
I have been practicing therapy with individuals and families for several years. I have extensive training and experience treating eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and compulsive exercise) in both residential and outpatient settings, along with generalized anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress. I work with a range of clients, including those actively struggling with addiction or eating disordered behavior, self-injury, or OCD, along with clients working toward maintaining their recovery. I welcome the challenge of working with clients who have endured multiple lapses in their recovery process, because I understand recovery and personal growth is not only not linear, but is a lifelong journey. I also love working with clients who are seeking to understand themselves and their patterns on a deeper level. Whether you feel you are at a crossroads in life, wonder why you continue to experience failed or dissatisfying relationships, or simply value the insight and connection of a therapeutic relationship, I would be honored to assist you on your path. I believe and understand that all behavior is symptomatic of a deeper emotional wound, and one can not change their behavior in the present without resolving what is in the past. In all of my work, I utilize an attachment-based model based on the brilliant research of professionals like Pat Crittenden, Jeffrey Young, and Mary Ainsworth. I can assist you in identifying old attachment injuries and finally finding relief and acceptance of these wounds as you actively work toward changing your patterns in the present.

Holistic Therapist, Looking Forward to
Challenging Cases from People Needing My Expertise
I am a holistic therapist, looking forward to challenging cases from people needing my expertise. Making use of a wide variety of therapies, from verbal to non-verbal, devoting much time on each of the select cases I take, and engaging in colleague consultations, I am often able to help with even the most difficult of issues. I also see children, doing family therapy even for the toughest kids. You'll see the difference family support makes, rather than my just trying to "fix the kid". I often begin with symptom-focused behavioral counseling to attempt rapid symptom improvement. When people stay beyond that brief initial period of basic counseling, we move into long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy to find and remedy the problem’s root cause. I encourage people to call me and we can talk about what your particular issues are and how I will be able to help you out. Or, if there is something I can't help you with, I will help you find the best regional expert for your issue.

I like to help adolescents, adults, and couples resolve issues they may be facing in their individual lives as well as within their relationships and families. I concentrate on finding solutions, identifying strengths, and helping clients get through the emotional barriers that keep them from moving forward. I believe an important factor in having a good therapeutic experience is creating a strong rapport with your therapist and I strive to make the process as easy as possible. I believe my professional experience, education, and personal life experiences help me to be a caring and effective therapist. I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families who are ready to change the way they are feeling, thinking, and interacting with one another. My method as a therapist is to be respectful, straightforward, and interactional. My approach is supportive, non-judgmental, and direct, though always compassionate. The office location that I have chosen is quiet, confidential and discrete. This location is also convenient to all areas of Louisville and Southern Indiana and can easily be accessed by the Watterson Expressway (I-264) at the Brownsboro Road exit.

Counseling can help you Better manage life transitions and challenges Gain relief from the effects of depression and anxiety Work through past trauma and pain Replace unhealthy habits with healthier lifestyle choices Improve self-esteem and confidence Create and/or improve healthy, lasting relationships Learn to be more fully present and grateful in the moment Increase your spiritual connection Achieve more balance in spirit, mind, and body About Me: Welcome, and thank you for your interest in learning more about me, and my practice. I am a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and a Certified Addictions Treatment Counselor, with a cozy, private office centrally located in the Hillcrest/Banker's Hill neighborhood of San Diego. Our offices are easily accessible by public transportation, are handicapped accessible, and provide off-street parking for your convenience. I believe therapy is a collaborative process toward healing and personal growth, where with trust and unconditional acceptance, people are reminded of and gently guided back to reconnecting with their own inner knowing. With a focus on integrating spirit, mind, and body, clients are empowered to define and achieve their goals in therapy as we work together to identify a plan of action that facilitates reaching those goals and affecting true change as quickly as possible. Helping clients identify and work toward reaching their goals while learning to be more present in the moment, and to thrive in life in pursuit of their highest good, is what I strive to help people accomplish in session. With the practice of mindfulness, and the help of other therapeutic interventions designed to reduce stress and anxiety, people can experience relief from self-doubt or self-consciousness, freedom from past defense mechanisms that may influence their reactions in the present, and freedom to reinvent themselves fearlessly without regard to what others may think of them. It is an honor to be part of this process of helping people become empowered as they discover many of the answers to life's challenges lie within themselves. In a comfortable, confidential, and supportive atmosphere, clients are able to achieve the personal growth we all strive for.

Mindset: Inspiration for the process of therapy can be drawn from one of the best movie quotes of all time, “No! Try not! Do or Do Not, There is no try.” These are very powerful words telling people, especially to those in therapy that you must either willingly make your own necessary and sometimes critical changes in your life or you don’t. Therapy is about actively regaining control of your personal energy. Therapy is a collaborative approach to healing and well-being between a client and therapist. The therapist helps guide a person into making better life decisions, but the client must intuitively think of new ways of managing their life stressors that they are comfortable starting and maintaining. Clients not willing to make changes for themselves will continue to spin helplessly and hopelessly out of control. The mind is constantly changing; people in therapy must also learn to continually adjust and adapt to new situations while keeping a mindful-eye on their past. Education and Training: Dr. Hurley received his Master of Arts (MA) in General and Theoretical Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in Teaneck, New Jersey. He graduated with a Doctoral Degree (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology at Forest Institute of Professional Psychology (FIPP) in Springfield, Missouri. At FIPP Dr. Hurley specialized in Marriage and Family Counseling. Other areas of training include neuro-psychology, anger management, bio-feedback, and pre-marital counseling. During his doctoral program he worked in a children’s psychiatric hospital. His internship was in community mental health, and he participated in a national study on Schizophrenia. Dr. Hurley’s post-doc residency was in substance abuse and rehabilitation. After his post-doc residency he spent two years in private practice in Libertyville, IL. Dr. Hurley then became the medical director for a Chicago based firm doing home health care delivering mental health therapy to Chicago’s south-side geriatric African-American population who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Dr. Hurley has taught undergraduate students at Robert Morris College in Aurora, IL and graduate students at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He finds teaching to be a change of pace and a way of leading a new generation of therapists into the Health Services Industry. His career path changed when he moved to Knoxville, TN. Dr. Hurley was the Clinical Director for Mental Health for Tennessee’s main intake prison facility. He worked with various criminals making sure that they received the help they needed and to minimize suicide attempts. Dr. Hurley’s stance on his education, training, and career is to always strive to learn more, to do more, and to be the best therapist possible. Therapeutic Stance: My approach to therapy with my clients is multi-faceted. There is no one therapy to fit all. I like to approach issues from a psycho-dynamic, family systems, CBT, Gestalt, existential, and medical stance. When dealing with mental health disorders you have to consider the mind as well as the body for the root of a problem. Therapy needs to be understandable by those who seek help and I have spent years refining my technique to help clients understand the issues they’re facing and the theories on how to resolve said issues. People feel more comfortable and understood if you can talk to them in the various places they are currently. I love to see individuals, couples, and groups in a calm, peaceful, and most importantly neutral environment. I love to make presentations to groups for psycho-educational purposes as well.
