At the foundation of my approach, I conceptualizes all individuals and their interactions with others (relationships) within the Systems framework. More simply, one cannot understand the dynamic of our struggles without exploring the familial, social, and cultural contexts. My work is based in Solution-Focused Therapy. This encourages dialogue to explore client's strengths, resources, and past successes. My collaborative approach fosters a sense of agency in clients, creating a co-constructed dialogue to explore and create realistic attainable therapeutic goals. This approach further emphasizes that clients best understand their unique circumstances. Therefore the role of therapist is to support a co-constructed dialogue around necessary changes in perceptions, thoughts, and behaviors. Lastly, I bring to the environment a compassionate and gentle stance, providing my clients with a warm and safe environment allowing more opportunity for clients to deeply explore their history and present struggles.

Therapy Services for Couples, Individuals, and Families
We are a group of licensed clinical marriage and family therapists who are committed to providing high quality therapy services for couples, families, individuals and groups. We see many different types of client issues, including but not limited to couples communication, anxiety, depression, anger, family and stepfamily difficulties, and premarital preparation. I have been in full-time private practice for over 10 years. As marriage and family therapists, my staff and I are specially trained to deal with the context between and around clients, in addition to whatever might be going on for them individually. My personal commitment is to provide a safe and welcoming environment in which we can help move clients from where they are struggling and challenged to personal growth, happiness, and greater connection with the ones they love. My relationship with my clients not only includes helping them in the crisis moments, but also being available throughout life for whatever may come up - many return to therapy for "tune-ups" at different points in their lives. I'm honored to be someone they feel safe enough with to return at those times when they need someone to listen. If this sounds like something that might be of help to you, please give us a call at 301-563-9520, or email us at info@laurelfay.com. We look forward to working with you.

Understand yourself better, become more free and fulfilled
My practice is trauma-focused, psychodynamic and relational
As your therapist, first and foremost I will respect the courage of your decision to seek therapy and create a foundation of safety, acceptance, and collaboration. I strongly believe that symptom reduction (e.g., anxiety, panic, constant worrying, depression, high stress levels, complex PTSD), and an exploration of the root causes of your most distressing problems are both vital aspects of a helpful therapeutic experience. I foster a therapeutic relationship that honors my clients’ conscious minds as well as feelings, symptoms, and behaviors that they may find confusing and painful, but may be clues to presenting problems. I also consider my clients' current life situations holistically, collaborating with them to explore physical, nutritional, general life style, social support, and self-regulation issues to find areas of resilience as well as those that could be strengthened. Presently, I work with late teens and adults of all ages. I work with clients who struggle with symptoms which may be the aftermath of loss, abuse or other difficult experiences, or are simply perplexed with why they repeat distressing patterns which cause them pain. My clients may enter therapy to explore "why they have such difficulty regulating their emotions", or, "why they continue to pursue relationships that are ultimately painful", or, "why it's so hard to feel anything"; they may also enter therapy to receive assistance with specific issues such as life transitions, relationship difficulties, and work or academic problems. I also specialize in the impact of past and current interpersonal trauma or loss on parenting capacities, and assist my clients when these experiences interfere with being loving and supportive parents in the present. My work blends relational psychotherapeutic approaches, trauma-focused assessment and treatment, and psychoeducation for both clients and their families where appropriate. My trauma studies, which included EMDRIA-approved advanced EMDR training, as well as principles of Internal Family Systems and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, have solidified my longstanding belief that therapy must often go beyond talk and attend to messages from our physical selves that may provide clues to where we are most "stuck". While I have been trained in several modalities and my approach is eclectic, I will meet you where you are presently to address the problems that are most distressing to you.

Compassionate Care with Options for Treatment
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Unknown. “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” Anonymous Hi. I understand that when you're hurting, you need understanding and sensitivity. You might be struggling with a difficult psychological disorder or just need help untangling the complex web of life. Perhaps you are struggling with a difficult relationship, need to overcome a serious trauma, or want to surmount a weight or smoking problem through hypnosis. I am also certified to perform past life regression, which might afford you self enrichment or provide the key to understanding aspects of thoughts and feelings you have today. Therapy is not a “one size fits all” discipline and fitting treatment to my individual client's personality and needs is a hallmark of my practice. I am skilled in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing,), Hypnosis, Past Life Regression, Relationship Counseling, or regular talk therapy, and will apply whichever technique or techniques in our sessions that promise the greatest benefit to you. The following are some of the issues I work with: Depression, relationship issues, anxiety, chronic pain, divorce, gay/lesbian issues, grief, OCD, spirituality, trauma, dissociation, family and sexual problems. This is not an exhaustive list and I encourage you to write or call to discuss whatever has brought you to consider using my services.

I'm an ordained clergywoman, have a Dr. of Ministry degree, endorsed by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a KY Licensed Pastoral Counselor, and credentialed a an ACPE Psychotherapist. I'm qualified to offer pastoral care, pastoral counseling and pastoral psychotherapy, and life coaching. Pastoral counseling calls for the integration of psychology and spirituality/religion when applicable to the Client. My own theology is moderate and leans to the left. While I'm a Christian attending Highland Baptist Church, I've also been trained to work with those of other faith traditions. In addition, Clients are accepted as they are; some Clients aren't in need of a spiritual/religious emphasis in their therapy, and I use a more secular approach with them. In addition to offering therapy, I also offer clinical supervision and train others in the art of pastoral counseling. Training is at the post-doctoral level and prepares those who desire licensure in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

She will use her vast repertoire of additional modalities based upon a particular client's need. I enjoy my work! I love the field of psychology because it is so vast. I care about helping people move toward psychological wellness and motivating and inspiring them to reach goals. I consider therapy to be a valuable component of the walk of one's inner journey toward self completion. Psycho-education permits understanding of the origin of problematic symptoms, and how an individual became well. This type of knowledge creates skills that are transferable across life events and time.

Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes!
Taking the first step...
I believe in taking a holistic approach to counseling. Since most issues are interrelated, positive change in one area begins a ripple effect of change in others. My training and over 25 years of clinical experience is diverse, addressing issues related to relationship problems, anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma, grief and stress. In addition, I offer two women's groups and an individualized Anger Management Program. Since 1995, I have been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma. Courses taught include, Understanding Addictions, Stress Management, Chemical Dependency, Human Emotions and Advanced Counseling Skills. One of the most effective interventions I use is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, (EMDR). It is enormously successful in treating PTSD and is often used with complicated grief issues. EMDR came to Oklahoma in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, on April 19, 1995. This tragedy resulted in widespread trauma and grief, throughout the state. A team of volunteer EMDR therapists immediately flew into Oklahoma City and worked tirelessly for several months, providing this therapy to victims, survivors and rescue workers. I was fortunate to have been in the group of 300 licensed therapists who were trained to carry on their work. As a result, I became certified in EMDR and have incorporated it into my therapy practice. It has allowed my clients to more effectively cope with and resolve a wide variety of issues and problems affecting their quality of life. EMDR continues to be one of the fastest, most valuable resources for individual healing. I am a Licensed Marital & Family Therapist, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Master Addictions Counselor and a Certified EMDR Therapist. My practice utilizes cognitive-behavioral therapy, showing the connection between thoughts, feelings and behavior. I also offer assertiveness and stress management training, in addition to chemical dependency counseling and chemical dependency interventions.

How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. If I will feel that I may not be the right fit, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who specialize in the issue you are seeking a solution for (i.e., pain management). We will also discuss fees. In our first session I will go over the inform consent and office policies with you and will collect data for the intake. I will become very involved with you and we will work as a team. I will ask you what your goals are and after a couple of sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. The plan is followed up with ongoing and frequent direct assessment, analysis, and adjustments from our Behavior Analyst, based on a child’s progress as determined by observations and objective data analysis. Focused Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Treatment for Autism Focused ABA therapy services are provided to individuals who need treatment only for a limited number of key functional skills or have a specific acute problem behavior in which its treatment should be the priority. Treatment generally ranges from 10-25 hours per week of direct therapy. However, certain treatment programs for some behavior may require more than 25 hours per week of direct therapy. Comprehensive ABA Treatment Our Comprehensive ABA looks at producing changes across a broad set of functions including cognitive, adaptive, social, and emotional domains. Treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder often involves 30-40 hours of one-to-one (1:1) direct therapy per week. Young or newly diagnosed children may start with a few hours of therapy per day, with the goal of increasing the intensity of therapy as their ability to tolerate and participate permits. The goal is to ultimately decrease hours of therapy per week when the child has met a majority of the treatment goals and is moving toward discharge. Social Skills Programs One of the most prevalent challenges for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder is in the area of social skills. This includes difficulty with observational skills, eye contact, play interactions, taking another’s perspective, making inferences, sharing enjoyment, and building relationships. Our Social Skills treatment programming works on functional skills including (but not limited to) establishing social communication skills, natural environment safety skills, and independent leisure skills making it possible to appropriately participate in family and community activities. One of our goals is to develop the lifelong ability to experience these events in a positive productive manner. Parent Participation Training Outside of treatment, it is important for parents to have the ability and techniques to reinforce the skills their child learns in therapy by incorporating them into daily routines. As with any skill, practice is critical. Parents actively involved in their child’s therapy often increase the progress made by their children. Our treatment plans include the appropriate parent participation and training to ensure they can reinforce their child’s development beyond the therapy setting.

Portrait Health Centers are multi-specialty clinics that employ the most cutting-edge and proven assessment protocols and treatment options available, believing that an Effective Treatment Depends On An Accurate Diagnosis. At Portrait Health Centers, we provide a comprehensive and multi-specialty assessment to determine the underlying causes of your symptoms and incorporate an appropriate treatment plan.

We work with individuals and couples to address issues including trust, vulnerability (physical, emotional), sexuality & sexual identity, communication, and conflict. We often meet with couples who are looking to improve their relationship, enhance mutual understanding and compassion for each other, create a closer connection, heal after an infidelity, handle recurrent arguments and money conflicts, address sexuality (including divergent desires), or decide if they should stay together or part ways. There are many therapeutic approaches used when meeting with a couple. We like to evaluate what approaches to use based on your needs and style as a couple. There isn’t one “right approach” to doing therapy as there isn’t one way to live. We provide education on what we have found useful in relationships. We invite you to look at new ideas and possibilities for living. We encourage you to try new ways of behaving and communicating. We like to learn from you about what you really want in your relationship. We are very interested in what each partner has to say about what has led to their struggle or becoming stuck. We want to know what you have done to change your situation, what has worked and what has not worked for you. We are careful not to duplicate what hasn’t worked. Counselors avoid taking sides because it is counterproductive to long-term success. That said, if we feel one partner needs to make a change in a particular area, we will say so. We have spent years helping men and women from every imaginable background and we are capable of seeing things empathetically from both perspectives. We emphasize the importance of forming a connection with your partner. This means there is an implied understanding of values, a common frame of reference, a series of shared experience and a sense that you are both on the same page. These connections form the bonds that foster trust and promote intimacy. We all need help from time to time and it is a sign of strength and intelligence to know when to seek support. If I have a leaky faucet and the only tool I have is a hammer, just banging on my pipes is only going to make the problem worse. The pipes burst, my basement floods and the foundation cracks. Or I could just call the plumber and he gives me a new tool called a wrench, so next time I have a leak I can fix it myself. Throughout our lives, we improve our skills by taking “courses” and practicing what we learn. If we played sports, we were coached in the basics and practiced them until they became memorized. At work, we were shown how to perform tasks, then got better and better as we repeated the process. To learn cooking or grilling, we followed recipes or observed someone with known abilities, then added our personal touches. Being emotionally healthy is another skill, one that gets little or no attention until failure to do so results in trouble. Helping You Become...
Emotion Focused, Mindfulness-Based and Existential Therapy
I have discovered that I work somewhat differently with different people; this is probably because each client is different and has different problems, strengths, needs and goals, and because, in each case, a unique relationship develops between me and the client. In all cases, I place the utmost importance on deeply understanding the client’s experience and on meeting that person with empathy and respect. I believe that people contain the seeds of their own authenticity and development, and that it is the therapist’s job to help the client remove what blocks his or her natural growth. When working with individuals, I use Emotion-Focused Therapy, existential therapy, and mindfulness-based therapy, as well as other techniques. I also pay a lot of attention to people’s histories in order to understand how their past development and experiences might be affecting their current capacity to live well in the present and imagine a future. Finally, I sometimes use Lifespan Integration© therapy to help clients integrate bodily/emotional memories from infancy, childhood and adolescence with their adult capacities for understanding. I find Lifespan Integration to be especially helpful for healing recent trauma gently without re-traumatizing. In couples counseling, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy to help partners deeply reconnect on the level of needs and feelings (as opposed to having that same unproductive argument over and over again). Once couples have learned to communicate in a way that is likely to get their needs met and have had help in healing breaches of trust, they generally find they can solve other problems without therapeutic help. Main Counseling Services: mental health counseling services (sometimes called “therapy” or “psychotherapy”) for individual adults couples counseling for couples in conflict, couples seeking to address specific relationship problems, and couples wishing to enhance their relationships grief counseling, trauma counseling, and treatment for people suffering from anxiety or depression, as well as for those working through identity issues, life transitions, or a variety of other problems counseling for people adjusting to, or coming to terms with, physical disability, sensory disability, chronic illness, life-threatening illness, or terminal illness counseling for family members of people with disabilities and/or illnesses, such as those needing help with caregiver stress counseling for crime victims under Washington State’s Crime Victims Compensation Program.
