Are You Feeling Down and Can't Stop Crying? Is Your
Relationship Off Track? I Can Help You Live Better!
How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. If I will feel that I may not be the right fit, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who specialize in the issue you are seeking a solution for (i.e., pain management). We will also discuss fees. In our first session I will go over the inform consent and office policies with you and will collect data for the intake. I will become very involved with you and we will work as a team. I will ask you what your goals are and after a couple of sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will be in a very safe and supportive environment. I will learn to know who you are and what your personality is and I will adapt the therapeutic process to meet your individual needs. We will discuss your progress as we go along and make changes if the need arises. We will also discuss those changes to ensure that we are on the right direction in your path for personal growth.

Welcome to Lori Underwood Therapy in San Diego! You have access to help TODAY with your most critical relationships! I focus on achieving realistic, lasting results for highly motivated San Diego professionals and their families in two critical areas: work and family relationships. Mine is a solutions-focused therapy practice with a proven track record of training high-performing individuals to guide their most important relationships into balance–quickly and effectively. Work relationships can cause stress, affecting family relationships. Signs of job stress can vary from person to person, depending on the particular situation, how long the individual has been subjected to the stressors, and the intensity of the stress itself. Some symptoms of job stress you may be experiencing include, but are not limited to: •Absenteeism •Anxiety •Depression •Extreme anger and frustration •Family conflict •Insomnia •Loss of mental concentration •Physical illnesses such as heart disease, migraine, headaches, stomach problems, and back problems •Substance abuse Markers indicating your work relationships may be out of balance include: •Feeling burned out •Most everyone you know thinks you’ve got everything together, when inside you feel like you are falling apart •No matter how hard you try you overwhelmingly feel like nothing ever seems to be “good enough” •Others tell you they know you can do it, but deep down you’re left wondering if you can Family relationships that are out of balance can result from and/or be the cause of stress at work. If your stress is affecting–or is a function of–your relationship with your spouse, ask yourself if you are feeling any of the following toward (or from) your spouse: •Contempt •Criticism •Sarcasm •Stonewalling If you are experiencing one or more of the above, now is the time to take action. Each emotion can often represent a marker of a stress fracture in your relationship. The good news is your relationship can be repaired. You have the answers inside you and together we can identify them. Know that there is hope for you and your relationships. I am confident I can help you TODAY.

Couples Counseling and Individual Psychotherapy
I offer psychotherapy services that will help you explore whatever it is that might be holding you back from living a vital and robust life. I can help you get your life on a track that will truly put you in touch with “happiness.” When we’re speaking to someone who is truly listening to us in a non-judgmental way we end up saying things we didn’t know we were going to say. This is therapeutic. When we talk to someone whom we feel truly hears us and “gets” us, who accepts us as we are . . . we begin to feel freer to reveal to that person (and, by proxy, to ourselves) more of who we really are. This is therapeutic. The healing that occurs in this safe space of speaking and being heard and seen is rarely duplicated in the world outside the consulting room. If you’re fortunate enough to have someone who gives you this kind of attention, then you know how precious that is. I create a safe space for revealing and discovering who you are, how you’re being in the world, and, if necessary, why? I help you find in yourself your preferred mode of being, to create more effective ways of getting what you want out of your life, and I work with you to execute a plan to make that happen. My work with couples (of any sexual orientation) includes conflict reduction, improving communication, and creating more intimate and ultimately satisfying relationships. There is often a breakdown in communication that takes place within a couple and leads to conflict, tension and even the dissolution of the bonded relationship altogether. Luckily, couples therapy addresses what is being said between two people, what is being heard, and what to do when the couple needs help finding a way to re-connect and enjoy each other again. There are few things more painful than feeling like you’ve lost the love you once shared with someone. If you’re in this position, you know exactly what I mean. It’s heartbreaking to feel disconnected from your loved one. Maybe the passion is missing, your day to day routine has dulled the spontaneity you once had, or you just don’t seem to know how to talk to each other anymore. I love working with couples because I get to be part of a process that allows people to restore their ability to experience companionship in a healthy and satisfying way. I now offer Skype sessions for your convenience.

Quick, Easy, Be a Better You!!!
Kari has an intriguing approach that allows her to work with traditionally resistant clients. She uses a therapy that is especially suited for those who don't want to face their trauma or pain, don't have the words to express their trauma or pain, and don't want to even talk about the things in their life that are causing them trouble. This unique approach allows her clients to receive almost immediate relief of emotional pain and the suffering it causes, all without the use of any hypnosis. Often those who have received this type of therapy notice that along with it comes improved physical functioning, increased energy, improved relationships, more positive outlooks, and more motivation to achieve their goals. Are you ready to achieve YOUR goals?

My practice is trauma-focused, psychodynamic and relational
As your therapist, first and foremost I will respect the courage of your decision to seek therapy and create a foundation of safety, acceptance, and collaboration. I strongly believe that symptom reduction (e.g., anxiety, panic, constant worrying, depression, high stress levels, complex PTSD), and an exploration of the root causes of your most distressing problems are both vital aspects of a helpful therapeutic experience. I foster a therapeutic relationship that honors my clients’ conscious minds as well as feelings, symptoms, and behaviors that they may find confusing and painful, but may be clues to presenting problems. I also consider my clients' current life situations holistically, collaborating with them to explore physical, nutritional, general life style, social support, and self-regulation issues to find areas of resilience as well as those that could be strengthened. Presently, I work with late teens and adults of all ages. I work with clients who struggle with symptoms which may be the aftermath of loss, abuse or other difficult experiences, or are simply perplexed with why they repeat distressing patterns which cause them pain. My clients may enter therapy to explore "why they have such difficulty regulating their emotions", or, "why they continue to pursue relationships that are ultimately painful", or, "why it's so hard to feel anything"; they may also enter therapy to receive assistance with specific issues such as life transitions, relationship difficulties, and work or academic problems. I also specialize in the impact of past and current interpersonal trauma or loss on parenting capacities, and assist my clients when these experiences interfere with being loving and supportive parents in the present. My work blends relational psychotherapeutic approaches, trauma-focused assessment and treatment, and psychoeducation for both clients and their families where appropriate. My trauma studies, which included EMDRIA-approved advanced EMDR training, as well as principles of Internal Family Systems and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, have solidified my longstanding belief that therapy must often go beyond talk and attend to messages from our physical selves that may provide clues to where we are most "stuck". While I have been trained in several modalities and my approach is eclectic, I will meet you where you are presently to address the problems that are most distressing to you.

Counseling for Individuals, Children, and Adolescents
Are you looking to make a positive change in your life but not quite sure what or how? Are there transitions in your life and you are unsure of how to cope with them? Do you have children and adolescents that you are finding hard to relate to? Do you feel stressed because of everything life throws at you? As your clinician, I want to work together to find a solution to these challenges. As humans, we should not have to deal with daily stress as a part of our lives and we shouldn’t have to figure it out all on our own. I specialize in working with children and adolescents. These two age populations are crucial in human development. During these stages of life, children experience many confusing emotions that relate to self identity, peer relationships, family relationships, life transitions and school. Working with children that range from 2-18 years old has allowed me to develop my knowledge with this delicate population. Working with children and adolescents, I have been trained to use different theoretical approaches, that which includes systemic, cognitive behavioral, postmodern, and humanistic. I also have experience working in the school setting providing counseling support and working within special education. My role is to provide support not only to the child, but also to the parents and family.

Effective Therapy Creates
Meaningful, Lasting, Joyful Change
Each of us is unique, complex and special. Together we can resolve the inner and outer conflicts that create pain and exhaustion. Our life often brings experiences not of our choosing. Sometimes we’re hurt by others. Sometimes we don’t fit easily into the world we live in. Sometimes what life brings feels too big to accept and manage. I can help you find peaceful and practical ways of doing the best you can with what is, of managing your self and situations with compassion and skill, of finding joy and nourishment in this life at this time. For over 25 years I have been practicing my craft with children, adolescents, middle adults, elders, couples and families. They have come to me with developmental, situational and relational issues. Some had experienced tragedies; some felt overwhelmed by their children or partner. Some were deeply grieving, some filled with anger. Some had illnesses or disabilities they wish they didn’t. Each of them added to my understanding of what it is to be human. Most of us long for happiness, self acceptance, caring relationships and success in our endeavors. Together, drawing from my extensive training and experience and your inner and outer resources, we can create meaningful, lasting and joyful change.

If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes!
Taking the first step...
I believe in taking a holistic approach to counseling. Since most issues are interrelated, positive change in one area begins a ripple effect of change in others. My training and over 25 years of clinical experience is diverse, addressing issues related to relationship problems, anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma, grief and stress. In addition, I offer two women's groups and an individualized Anger Management Program. Since 1995, I have been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma. Courses taught include, Understanding Addictions, Stress Management, Chemical Dependency, Human Emotions and Advanced Counseling Skills. One of the most effective interventions I use is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, (EMDR). It is enormously successful in treating PTSD and is often used with complicated grief issues. EMDR came to Oklahoma in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, on April 19, 1995. This tragedy resulted in widespread trauma and grief, throughout the state. A team of volunteer EMDR therapists immediately flew into Oklahoma City and worked tirelessly for several months, providing this therapy to victims, survivors and rescue workers. I was fortunate to have been in the group of 300 licensed therapists who were trained to carry on their work. As a result, I became certified in EMDR and have incorporated it into my therapy practice. It has allowed my clients to more effectively cope with and resolve a wide variety of issues and problems affecting their quality of life. EMDR continues to be one of the fastest, most valuable resources for individual healing. I am a Licensed Marital & Family Therapist, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Master Addictions Counselor and a Certified EMDR Therapist. My practice utilizes cognitive-behavioral therapy, showing the connection between thoughts, feelings and behavior. I also offer assertiveness and stress management training, in addition to chemical dependency counseling and chemical dependency interventions.

Enhance Your Awareness & Connection
Are you having more intense feelings lately? Tired of trying so hard? Have you lost your creative edge and become too resigned to routine? Life changes. . . even something positive such as a new marriage, child or job can create unfamiliar situations and energies. Anxiety, confusion, irritability or emptiness are signs that its time to check in with yourself. Therapy is often about creating time each week to reflect, question, and evaluate what's going on for you. Many highly sensitive, gifted and talented people have come to pursue what is next with their self understanding and relationship to others. Executives, designers, educators, artists, entrepreneurs, innovators, helping professionals and others have returned over the years to develop further awareness and skills from as far away as Santa Monica, Rancho Palos Verdes, Westlake, La Verne and Downtown LA. Video counseling is available for residents of California (except for psychotherapy). Real-life issues can crop up for those who have emigrated, immigrated, or re-entered the US (within in the last two generations). I have first-hand experience with all three situations and have worked successfully with diplomats, peace corps workers, missionaries and expatriates.

Effective Short Term Treatment
I have been in private practice for over 20 years working with children, adolescents as well as adults. I work from a cognitive-behavioral perspective and specialize in treating anxiety disorders. I also treat many other problem areas. Parenting issues are of great concern to many of my patients and that is a large part of my practice as well. More recently I have incorporated mindfulness concepts and have found that all of my patients who are interested in some of these ideas have benefited tremendously from this. I believe therapy is a collaborative process between the patient and the therapist. I may have the education and experience but it is the patient's life and we need to work together to find the solutions that work for each person.

Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Transformation through Self-regulation ~ Professionalism, Caring and Value “I believe that everyone has the right to feel healthy and energetic. Stress often interferes with this; it doesn't have to be that way. A warm, professional atmosphere and a variety of bio-behavioral techniques can provide just the support necessary to help people be the very best they can be. I am personally in recovery from a 13 year Migraine headache and anxiety condition; biofeedback and counseling helped me to put this debilitating set of symptoms into remission without the use of medications. I am a living testimonial to the effectiveness of the complementary therapeutic approach to health. A combination of bio-behavioral and psychodynamic, creative approaches are used in therapy sessions. My education and training in Biofeedback, Psychophysiology, Creative Arts Therapy and Counseling offer a broad array of tools to use in my work with people. Each person is assessed and treated based on their unique needs. Symptoms treated include: Anxiety, weight/stress management, Migraine and Tension Headache, ADD/ADHD, High Blood Pressure, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Pain, and tension related to Pregnancy, Labor, Delivery and stress-related Infertility and; more. I also work with individuals and groups for: wellness, stress management, peak performance and performance enhancement.”

For couples feeling it might take a miracle to change...
Last Shot Marriage Counselor for the Most Troubled Marriages
I'm a senior clinical psychologist who helps couples during the worst of times. My specialty is working with couples who haven't been helped by other couples therapists. 81% of therapists surveyed say that they work with couples, however only 12% have ever taken a formal course in the subject. I've spent my professional career working as a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, the premier organization for those practicing marital therapy. I've been a sex therapist at the highest level (Diplomate) for over thirty years. More recently, I completed the most advanced training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, a way of working with couples that has over 35 years behind it. ...and hard science. Couples come to see me for many reasons: • A couple is fighting a lot and it impacts the overall tone of the marriage My job is to teach you about destructive patterns and how to break the cycle. I'm active, direct, and help you to put your energies toward change. Research demonstrates that these patterns can and do change. • There is no pleasure in it, or sex feels mechanical. Sometimes things don't work well when you do have sex, or you hate the body you are living in. Let me put my thirty years of helping couples and teaching sex at a graduate level work for you. Become closer, work through a trauma past, and make sex become alive and pleasurable again. • You've have, or are about to consult a lawyer about getting a divorce, but wonder if Last Shot Couples Therapy could help. Did you know the severity of the problems have little relationship to the outcome of a marriage 5 years later? The majority of couples who had serious difficulties, like affairs, job loss, or intense arguments labeled themselves as "happy" 5 years later? They were tougher than their problems. Are you? Would you like to be? • You think so differently. It hard to relate. Aspergers, Trauma history, even Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder present very different perspectives. One is an artist, the other a scientist. But the fights might seem to be around parenting, but they are actually about world views. I work with couples who "think differently." Perhaps they come from different cultures. Or the same culture but now live in the USA. Choose a psychologist who respects these real differences in perspectives or cognitive processing, and is enthusiastic about making the love relationship work for you.

Couples Counseling and Brief Therapy for Individuals
An Experienced, Supportive Therapist.
Do you have the relationship blues? Relationships are the basic fabric of our lives, but they can be so hard. You may be struggling with feeling distant or overly involved, with not knowing how to get your needs met or deal with others' needs. I can help you discover the underlying blocks to having a more fulfilling relationship. We’ll unpack your “personal baggage” from the past, improve your communication skills and dismantle your repetitive negative cycles of relating. I have worked with individuals and couples to improve relationships with self and other for 25 years. I can help you to overcome the stumbling blocks that keep you from having the satisfying relationship that you want. Couples usually come to therapy shut down, hurt, and/or angry. Through counseling you can open up and regain connection. I'll help you identify and change dysfunctional relationship patterns, learn new ways of communicating and understand how you are bringing some experiences of the past into the present. You'll build your communication and intimacy skills, deal with issues such as becoming parents, escalating arguments, infidelity, walls of silence, fear and anger. You will learn to see your relationship problems as about the dynamic between you, not one person's or the other's fault. BRIEF INDIVIDUAL THERAPY In brief (10 -12 weeks) individual therapy, you’ll gain insight by looking deep inside at what is blocking you or driving you in the wrong direction. We will strive towards self-acceptance, which also leads to better relationships to others. You need understanding of what is going wrong and why, in order to do it differently in the future. When you know where your problems are rooted and how they show up, you have the opportunity to change. With both couples and individuals, I work collaboratively to help you gain insight, to look deeply and understand what is blocking you or driving you in the wrong direction. You need understanding of what is going wrong and why, in order to do it differently. I am interactive, empathic, respectful, warm and at times, humorous. Experience is the best teacher, it's true. In 30 years of practice, I've gained much experience with clients of all ages, ethnicities, sexual preferences and class backgrounds. It's an honor to share in your journey and to have you courageously allow me into your private world.

Psychotherapy for Couples and Individual Adults
If you are looking for a therapist, I would encourage you to speak to at least three different clinicians on the phone or take the time to have an initial consultation visit. It's important that you feel comfortable enough to let yourself be known by whomever you choose to work with. For no other reasons than chemistry and connection, some of us will be a good match for you and others won't. When I commit to working with a couple or individual, I am intending to create an intimate relationship that is built on trust and connection. The relationship needs to be able to withstand the tumult of painful and positive memories, angry outbursts as well as joyful hopes for the future. I have been working as a psychotherapist for twenty five years. As I age and grow, my own life perspective certainly effects the work that I do.However, the foundation of my work is rooted in a strong connection between me and the people I come to know.

Living to the Fullest
As a psychologist and psychotherapist, I believe that psychotherapy is most beneficial when it can address both broad and specific problems and help people find solutions to life's conflicts and stressors. Chronic stress and chronic relational conflicts often become obstacles to leading an emotionally healthy and rewarding existence. Ultimately, I believe the goal of therapy is to enable people to make decisions that will allow them to feel most satisfied, productive and in control of their lives. Likewise, learning to cope with life's everyday stressors, as well as crises can be an important part of psychotherapeutic work. My approach is tailored to individual needs and focuses on building a collaborative dialogue in which to work towards identified therapeutic goals. This includes symptom reduction (anxiety, depression, self-harm), as well asworking with issues pertaining to gender, sexuality, creative blocks, performance anxiety, infertility and parenting issues, among others. Consulting with a psychologist and taking the step forward to begin psychotherapy can be one of the best investments you make in yourself. Therapy is an effective tool to manage symptoms of anxiety and depression, and foster personal growth. Research has shown that psychotherapy enhances overall mental health, and self-esteem. Psychotherapy can also be helpful in making informed decisions regarding real life dilemmas. I provide a safe and comfortable environment in which to explore the subtle and not-so-subtle psychological and emotional factors that influence all aspects of one's life.

For Your Emotional and Relational Well-Being
My goal is to assist individuals, couples and families to develop emotional and relational well-being. This is done by learning new skills and having experiences so that new feelings and behaviors can be integrated into our life and relationships. When couples come in for marriage counseling they are usually in some sort of distress, frequently one or both not feeing their emotional needs are being met. When stressed people tend to either react or shut down, thus impeding communication. It is also hard for one to empathize and comfort the other when in a stress state. When each learns how to monitor their own stresses and has the tools for alleviating stress, relationships fair better. At this point it becomes easier to dialogue and learn about the other's needs and communicate ours. Indviduals seek counseling or coaching frequently because of stress in relationships. They may be experiencing anxiety or depression as a result. These relationships problems can be in family, at work or with friends. On occasion someone may seek psychotherapy for personal growth reasons, they want to feel they can understand themselves better and improve the relationship they have with themselves. Singles who are looking to find the right relationship also may seek counseling in order to help clarify who they are and who would be a good match for them. At other times people are suffering from trauma that has occurred from childhood wounds or more recent events. Until these wounds and traumas are healed and resolved they may impact the current functioning and wellbeing of the individual.
