Understand yourself better, become more free and fulfilled
My practice is trauma-focused, psychodynamic and relational
As your therapist, first and foremost I will respect the courage of your decision to seek therapy and create a foundation of safety, acceptance, and collaboration. I strongly believe that symptom reduction (e.g., anxiety, panic, constant worrying, depression, high stress levels, complex PTSD), and an exploration of the root causes of your most distressing problems are both vital aspects of a helpful therapeutic experience. I foster a therapeutic relationship that honors my clients’ conscious minds as well as feelings, symptoms, and behaviors that they may find confusing and painful, but may be clues to presenting problems. I also consider my clients' current life situations holistically, collaborating with them to explore physical, nutritional, general life style, social support, and self-regulation issues to find areas of resilience as well as those that could be strengthened. Presently, I work with late teens and adults of all ages. I work with clients who struggle with symptoms which may be the aftermath of loss, abuse or other difficult experiences, or are simply perplexed with why they repeat distressing patterns which cause them pain. My clients may enter therapy to explore "why they have such difficulty regulating their emotions", or, "why they continue to pursue relationships that are ultimately painful", or, "why it's so hard to feel anything"; they may also enter therapy to receive assistance with specific issues such as life transitions, relationship difficulties, and work or academic problems. I also specialize in the impact of past and current interpersonal trauma or loss on parenting capacities, and assist my clients when these experiences interfere with being loving and supportive parents in the present. My work blends relational psychotherapeutic approaches, trauma-focused assessment and treatment, and psychoeducation for both clients and their families where appropriate. My trauma studies, which included EMDRIA-approved advanced EMDR training, as well as principles of Internal Family Systems and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, have solidified my longstanding belief that therapy must often go beyond talk and attend to messages from our physical selves that may provide clues to where we are most "stuck". While I have been trained in several modalities and my approach is eclectic, I will meet you where you are presently to address the problems that are most distressing to you.

Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

Perhaps you have reached a point in your life in which something has to change; the sadness, anger, confusion or depression have become too great a burden to carry. Perhaps you have been a victim of profound brokenness and long for healing and a brighter future. Or perhaps you desperately want to be a good parent, but it seems like everything you have tried hasn't worked. If this is you, I would be honored to come alongside you and offer my assistance. It takes wisdom to recognize when a problem exists and courage to do something about it. As your therapist, you honor me by sharing your life with me. I will bring the best that I know from my study and experience. I will actively listen to your concerns, offer real solutions and provide relevant feedback. I will always have compassion and empathy for you in all that we do. I value you as a person in need of respect and care and will always treat you with highest dignity.

Compassionate Care with Options for Treatment
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Unknown. “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” Anonymous Hi. I understand that when you're hurting, you need understanding and sensitivity. You might be struggling with a difficult psychological disorder or just need help untangling the complex web of life. Perhaps you are struggling with a difficult relationship, need to overcome a serious trauma, or want to surmount a weight or smoking problem through hypnosis. I am also certified to perform past life regression, which might afford you self enrichment or provide the key to understanding aspects of thoughts and feelings you have today. Therapy is not a “one size fits all” discipline and fitting treatment to my individual client's personality and needs is a hallmark of my practice. I am skilled in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing,), Hypnosis, Past Life Regression, Relationship Counseling, or regular talk therapy, and will apply whichever technique or techniques in our sessions that promise the greatest benefit to you. The following are some of the issues I work with: Depression, relationship issues, anxiety, chronic pain, divorce, gay/lesbian issues, grief, OCD, spirituality, trauma, dissociation, family and sexual problems. This is not an exhaustive list and I encourage you to write or call to discuss whatever has brought you to consider using my services.

Many clients are working through unfinished business from their past experience, while many are more recently blocked or stuck in self defeating habits or behaviors. Together, clients and I draw upon a variety of understandings and tools from Western social psychological knowledge and Eastern traditions and philosophies.

I'm an ordained clergywoman, have a Dr. of Ministry degree, endorsed by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a KY Licensed Pastoral Counselor, and credentialed a an ACPE Psychotherapist. I'm qualified to offer pastoral care, pastoral counseling and pastoral psychotherapy, and life coaching. Pastoral counseling calls for the integration of psychology and spirituality/religion when applicable to the Client. My own theology is moderate and leans to the left. While I'm a Christian attending Highland Baptist Church, I've also been trained to work with those of other faith traditions. In addition, Clients are accepted as they are; some Clients aren't in need of a spiritual/religious emphasis in their therapy, and I use a more secular approach with them. In addition to offering therapy, I also offer clinical supervision and train others in the art of pastoral counseling. If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes!
Taking the first step...
I believe in taking a holistic approach to counseling. Since most issues are interrelated, positive change in one area begins a ripple effect of change in others. My training and over 25 years of clinical experience is diverse, addressing issues related to relationship problems, anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma, grief and stress. In addition, I offer two women's groups and an individualized Anger Management Program. Since 1995, I have been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma. Courses taught include, Understanding Addictions, Stress Management, Chemical Dependency, Human Emotions and Advanced Counseling Skills. One of the most effective interventions I use is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, (EMDR). It is enormously successful in treating PTSD and is often used with complicated grief issues. EMDR came to Oklahoma in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, on April 19, 1995. This tragedy resulted in widespread trauma and grief, throughout the state. A team of volunteer EMDR therapists immediately flew into Oklahoma City and worked tirelessly for several months, providing this therapy to victims, survivors and rescue workers. I was fortunate to have been in the group of 300 licensed therapists who were trained to carry on their work. As a result, I became certified in EMDR and have incorporated it into my therapy practice. It has allowed my clients to more effectively cope with and resolve a wide variety of issues and problems affecting their quality of life. EMDR continues to be one of the fastest, most valuable resources for individual healing. I am a Licensed Marital & Family Therapist, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Master Addictions Counselor and a Certified EMDR Therapist. My practice utilizes cognitive-behavioral therapy, showing the connection between thoughts, feelings and behavior. I also offer assertiveness and stress management training, in addition to chemical dependency counseling and chemical dependency interventions.

How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. If I will feel that I may not be the right fit, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who specialize in the issue you are seeking a solution for (i.e., pain management). We will also discuss fees. In our first session I will go over the inform consent and office policies with you and will collect data for the intake. I will become very involved with you and we will work as a team. I will ask you what your goals are and after a couple of sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will be in a very safe and supportive environment. I will learn to know who you are and what your personality is and I will adapt the therapeutic process to meet your individual needs. When life gives you lemons ... what do you do? Whether you believe we choose our own circumstances, that there is a master plan, or that sometimes sh*t happens, you still have reactions, feelings, and decisions to make about "what next?" It is NOT YOUR FAULT you have problems stemming from your past, and it IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to create your future. If you knew HOW to do that, you would probably not be looking for a therapist! I will help you design a positive life, REGARDLESS OF YOUR HISTORY. I trust and respect your ability to make good choices and decisions, when you are able to pay attention to your inner voice, your sense of who you are at the core. I will help you discover, re-discover, or create your true self, so that problems in your life become opportunities for growth. I sometimes conduct sessions that are not framed by the clock, working with individuals or couples until a natural stopping point. This flexible scheduling allows for resolution and re-direction in a more time-friendly manner. I help couples learn to value and appreciate the differences that have been driving them apart, and to regain the loving feelings that brought them together. I help those with a medical condition deal with the anger, depression, frustration, and other feelings that are associated with illness, and I also provide a safe place for their family members or significant others to deal with their own feelings and concerns. My office has a calming, Zen atmosphere, a soothing and pleasant environment. I am no longer on any insurance panels. If you wish, I provide statements for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement of a percentage of fees.

Hope and Healing for the Hurting
I have been in private practice since 2002 working with individuals, couples, and families. In particular, I work with people struggling with relational, emotional, and physical health issues that make it difficult for them to succeed in dealing with eating disorders, addictions, and in relationships. I believe in each person's ability to make changes that can significantly improve their life and relationships with others. My clients pick up on this belief and make changes they were never able to do so in the past. I want to help you find hope and experience new levels of health in your relationship with your self and with others.

Compassionate CLIENT Centered Therapy-
Focus Is On the CLIENT Not the PROBLEM-
I was first trained as a behaviorist and client centered therapist and moved to a psychoanalytic approach in graduate school. I have since been exposed to many approaches of mental health treatment and theory. from Freud and Jung to New Age and Eastern Philosophies, I have developed my own sense of a Humanistic approach based on the premise that caring for the client is foremost in the treatment process. I have learned the healing relationship between therapist and client is more important then the theory or model that is being practiced, and it is also very important for the type of treatment being practiced to be consistent with the needs of the client. In other words, I don't make my client fit into my treatment approach but create an approach to meet the needs of my client. I truly believe in total acceptance and recognize that the patient has the power and responsibility to make changes required to solve problems and live a happier and contented life. I also believe that the unconscious is a powerful influence on everyone's perception of who they are and how the world responds to them. Self-discovery is part of the process, as is learning cognitive behavioral tools to resolve irrational beliefs and coping with emotions. I believe that unconscious thoughts, as well as negative or irrational beliefs play a dominate role in in the problems we face in our lives. Therapy will focus on getting in touch with one's true self and gaining a rational understanding of the motivations behind one's unhealthy behaviors and beliefs. with this understanding one begins to accept life situations for what they really mean. The process therefore develops an acceptance of the problem, increases motivation for change and instills a powerful belief and awareness that one can actually have the power to make the necessary changes that are required to solve the problems, which brought them into therapy. I have learned that the most significant factor in successful treatment of an individual is to focus on the individual and not on the problem. As I have taught my students and interns " If you focus on the problem you lose sight of the individual". No matter what problem the client brings into the therapy, the solution will be unique to the individuals experiences, skills and personal development. We have to treat the individual not the problem.

We all need a little help sometimes. Whether you need help with a current issue that is causing you distress or want to work on a life-long problem that you struggle with, I provide a safe, non-judgmental place to work on what’s bothering you. I believe that everyone has strengths. Whether my client is an individual, couple or family, I help them by identifying what is working in their life, what isn’t and how we can work together to make changes. I have worked with many families and individuals through Family Service Agency of San Francisco, WOMAN Inc. and Bay Area Community Resources in Marin. Through these agencies I had the opportunity to provide therapy for children ages 6-17 and their families as well as women who have experienced domestic violence.

Are you seeking change, are you in crisis, does your life seem to be falling apart? I can help you ease the suffering or crisis that exists. I work through issues by understanding Relationship: relationship to the self, with your family, with your love relationships, relationship with friends and colleagues, and how to sustain these relationships. Another major life and soul issue is finding your purpose, and creating a vision of the future, which are the keynotes to happiness. I am informed by a number of theoretical traditions and techniques for change, i.e. positive psychology, psychoanalysis, transpersonal psychology (inner child archetype work), cognitive/behavioral psychology, psychosynthesis, and soul psychology (the Science of the Soul). Whatever the tradition, however, loving relationship is the focal point of the work.

Does your life feel out of control? Does it feel like nothing ever changes no matter how hard you try? Do you feel down most of the time? In a warm and supportive environment, we will discuss your concerns and establish what it is you want to change in your life. I provide support and feedback so that clients may resolve present problems and unhealthy patterns of behavior. Do you feel that you are searching for solutions but getting stuck? What are you searching with...your heart or your head? In essence, we start to stray away from our inner guidance and we begin to lose faith in ourselves. We stop listening to our heart’s inner guidance and move up to our brain believing that’s where the answers lie. That’s a big mistake. Because then we become unsure and lose trust and hope...in ourselves... in others... maybe even in everything. It doesn't have to be that way and you don’t have to go it alone. I offer a helping hand in difficult times. I would love to help you learn to listen to the small still voice inside your heart. • Having no office, I offer phone sessions-save money on gas and you can be in the comfort and privacy of your own home. • Convenient flexible appointment times

It takes courage to seek a professional therapist and entrust that person with your thoughts, feelings, and goals. It takes time to find the right therapist who has the specific knowledge, skills, and experience to assist with your unique and individual requests. Therapy may provoke many questions that you have been struggling with but may have put aside due to the daily tasks of a hectic daily routine. Life brings a tremendous amount of challenges, surprises, and questions our way. I would consider it an honor to provide you with a professional, safe, confidential environment to examine your challenges, values, belief systems, goals, and questions. Together we will set an appropriate pathway to examining answers, uncovering strengths, positive skills and healing. Therapy can help you when you are wondering what a loving relationship should look and feel like to you: What being a good parent means to you; what does giving of yourself to all of the important people in your life mean; how should you do that; what would it look like; how do you manage your children and household when your active duty spouse is forward deployed; how do you help your children cope with separation anxiety of yet another deployment; how do you accomplish your mission if you are wondering if your family is prepared for your absence and will be safe at home; how do you grieve loss; how do you transition from high school to college and begin investing your time in a degree, vocation, or profession that is right for you. As a licensed therapist I can help you walk through these important questions and life circumstances. There are therapeutic methods that can be used to sit with you and open the pathways to thought, exploration, answers, and healing.

I enjoy working with couples and individuals addressing relationship difficulties such as infidelity/affairs, conflict and communication issues, life transitions, pre-marital counseling, relationship loss, divorce, and emotional disengagement. I also have experience working with adults facing issues including depression, anxiety, trauma, self-esteem, divorce/blended families, and grief. I have advanced training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), an empirically validated therapeutic approach to working with couples and relationships. The EFT approach helps reinforce attachment bonds and facilitate the creation of secure connections between partners leading to increased intimacy and fulfillment in their relationship. I utilize Clinical Hypnosis (Hypnotherapy) to help clients feel relaxed and process trauma at a subconscious level. My training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has proven helpful in teaching Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Distress Tolerance skills. I consider it an honor and privilege to help people grow and change in a way that is rewarding to them. Addiction, Complex Trauma, Creative & Spiritual Expression
Healing from the wreckage of child abuse, psychological abuse and addictive disorders is an all encompassing process. I am deeply committed to working with addicts and survivors of complex trauma who are intent on moving beyond survival to a life of fully thriving. An inspired collaboration that sparks curiosity, humor and a powerful creative process of healing and self discovery holds great personal meaning and purpose. If you think outside the box and have the courage to take radical steps towards excavating difficult memories so as to actualize one's true self than I welcome the opportunity to guide you through this process. Drawing from an eclectic traditional and humanistic orientation and holistic and creative resources, we would work together to stabilize addictions, heal core traumatic wounds, dismantle and correct dysfunctional relational patterns, and manifest your unique potentials. Bodywork, psychopharmacology, creative and spiritual exploration may be integrated into the treatment process as warranted. I authored A Clinicians Journey from Complex Trauma to Thriving and co-authored a play performed for at-risk women and girls in the public sector of NYC. My journey of recovery was told through an animated film short by OC87 Recovery Diaries aired on PBS. I am a media resource for HARO & WMC SheSource.
