In our work together, you’ll have my full attention, presence, and compassionate support, along with insight to help you navigate life’s challenges—whether personal, relational, or professional. As a licensed psychoanalyst with a PhD in Organizational Behavior, I bring both clinical expertise and a practical understanding of the unique pressures people face in work, relationships, and life transitions. I have experience supporting clients through career challenges, relationship dynamics, self-discovery, and coping with trauma or life changes. Relationship Off Track? I Can Help You Live Better!
How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. If I will feel that I may not be the right fit, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who specialize in the issue you are seeking a solution for (i.e., pain management). We will also discuss fees. In our first session I will go over the inform consent and office policies with you and will collect data for the intake. I will become very involved with you and we will work as a team. I will ask you what your goals are and after a couple of sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will be in a very safe and supportive environment. I will learn to know who you are and what your personality is and I will adapt the therapeutic process to meet your individual needs. We will discuss your progress as we go along and make changes if the need arises. We will also discuss those changes to ensure that we are on the right direction in your path for personal growth.

Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. We often lose touch with who we truly are and our priorities
My approach to psychotherapy is humanistic, psycho-dynamic and relational. I view healing of the whole person as part of an individual’s natural development and growth. This therapeutic process provides an introspective, empathetic focus, aimed at understanding, removing emotional blocks and moving toward ongoing growth. After assessing the individual's concerns, needs and goals, I make psychiatric referrals when necessary for prescriptive treatment and work closely with the psychiatrist, so that collaborative treatment planning and treatment options can be considered. I believe the relationship between the client and therapist is where the most significant healing occurs. Psychotherapy becomes a creative process, incorporating mindful attentiveness to one's self as well as the self of the other. The healing of mind, body and spirit merges into a solid foundation of the integrated self. Through the use of a variety of approaches such as psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and attachment theory, I offer a warm, accepting environment for the disclosure of emotions, experiences and secrets that may be difficult to discuss or have been held inside. Throughout our work together, we will bring awareness and light to the areas of your life where you feel stuck. Therapy can be a place to unravel your life story in order to “make sense” of it. The weaving of past stories, events, feelings and traumas, with current emotions, patterns, stressors and events will enable you to integrate the past with the present.

Therapy means many different things to different people. For some it is a journey of growth, self-awareness, and healing. For others it is necessary for them to survive. Therapy is about where you are, where you want to go, what you want to explore, and joining you on your experience. I am here to guide you, focus you, support you and push you when needed.

LIFE CHANGING PSYCHOTHERAPY
Different people respond to different methods of healing. For that reason I am trained in a number of different healing modalities such as: Humanistic Psychology— This approach provides you with a safe, unconditionally accepting experience in the therapeutic relationship. In this way we work to remove any toxic shame you may be carrying from the past. This can be particularly helpful if you come from a difficult family upbringing. Many of our issues we carry are a result of negative relationship patterns from the past. Humanistic psychology does reparative work by making the therapeutic relationship as accepting, non-judgmental, and healing as possible. Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Inner Child Work— These tools teach you how to relate to yourself in a loving, present time, productive manner. Most of us suffer from a strong “inner critic.” With the skills of Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Inner Child work, you will learn to alleviate suffering generated by the self-critic and move forward. Cognitive Behavioral Work— The most commonly used type of therapy, CBT is effective for helping you move out of stagnation and into accountable action when working on achieving specific goals. Goals are set and tracked within the therapy so you are not alone in them. It is sometimes not enough to gain insight and do emotional healing in therapy, we often need to work toward concrete behavioral changes. CBT lets us do just that. Emotional Freedom Technique-- Also referred to as “tapping”, this healing modality is used specifically to reduce cortisol levels in your blood stream which will in turn ease depression and anxiety. Cortisol is the hormone released by the brain’s amygdala gland when under stress— sometimes resulting in paralyzing fears. Once cortisol levels reduce, you will often feel able to handle whatever is challenging you in a more direct, effective manner. How do you work in couples counseling? As well as being a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I am also a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist. If you are currently experiencing issues in your romantic relationship, it is important to find a therapist who has specific couples training to help you. Imago relationship therapy is one of the most renowned therapies in treating couples. Imago therapy is based on learning effective “mirroring” communication skills, being able to hold each person’s experience in equal esteem, and making decisions in a cooperative / safe way. In the process we heal the “unfinished business of childhood” (i.e. past hurts or issues) that we transfer over from our family of origin to our adult romantic partners. As a result of this kind of healing we gain greater maturity, intimacy, and fulfillment in relationships. See the Imago Couples Therapy section of this site for more. What about life coaching? I am also a Certified Strategic Intervention Life Coach. Tony Robbins and Cloe Madanes developed this form of life coaching. The coaching is based off Mr. Robbins’ research and seminars as well as Ms. Madanes’ experience as a psychotherapist and author. Together they coined the theory of “Human Needs Psychology”. This theory states that all of our behaviors and beliefs are driven by six basic needs. When these needs are made conscious we are better equipped at fulfilling them in ways that provide optimal growth and happiness. Life coaching might best be thought of as a form of unique behavioral therapy. That is, when you stop ruminating on the reasons things are not working out, and start changing your behavior to act in accord with what you say you want, your goals can be achieved. I also run men's groups. Please inquire for more info. If you're ready to take a step toward change, contact me. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to see if this might be a good fit for you.

MY COUNSELING PHILOSOPHY I believe that counseling is a way to strengthen oneself emotionally so that one's life journey can be traveled with calmness, peacefulness, integrity and well-being. Since this journey is not always easy, counseling offers a partnership to explore problems, challenges and life events with the assistance of a well-trained, knowledgeable and empathetic guide by your side. As each life story and circumstances are different, so too are the various approaches that are available. I believe that each individual is unique and, therefore, endeavor to use my training and experience to provide the safest and most comfortable format for effective therapy.

If you are in need of counseling, coaching, or support as you address your relationships, I would love the opportunity to help you understand where you are at and assist you in getting where you want to go. I have been counseling individuals and couples for many years and have seen many make significant progress in their lives. I would enjoy meeting and working with you! Clients find "life coaching" allows them to explore their passion & to experience progress in their life now. I use tools like life mapping, passion testing, etc. to help you explore your life and future. Different from the work of a psychologist, coaching focuses on what you are called to do & how to get about it. Relationships can be challenging and sometimes you need help in developing skills to enhance communication, resolve conflict, etc. I have over 20 years experience of working with couples & individuals in helping relationships.

Couples Counseling - Be Your Best Selves
Self-Management Tools to Optimize Your Relationship
In individual work, I am interactive and work concretely with goals and how to achieve those goals. I offer specific tools for improving areas you are struggling with or just want to improve: - creating clear communication, - how to disagree in a non-divisive way, - how to clarify expectations, wants and needs, disappointments and resentments, etc. I am also mindful of the effect that a person's childhood has on how a person acts as an adult and where she/he gets "stuck", so I can "unstick" those places with specific skill-building. My specializations include: depression, anxiety, all relationship issues, eating disorders/bingeing, chronic illness (especially CFIDS and diabetes), and problems with sex/sexuality, childhood history of abuse (intermittent/chronic/severe), and PTSD, including single incidents to severe dissociative processes. In couples work, I support each person’s process and direction. I am fair and balanced with each partner in a couple; I am directive and create new ways of communicating and safe experiments within the session. I work with many different kinds of couples and a large variety of issues. Focus is often on: issues of improved communication, fair fighting, unequal/inhibited sexual desire, abuse history affecting intimacy, separation decisions, clean divorce. I have thirty-two years licensed experience working with individual women, men and couples. I have been in private practice since 1980, when I received my license to practice Marriage and Family Counseling. I just completed a three-year part-time position with UCSF as a Behavior Medicine Specialist for CDAPP (California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program). I trained health care professionals in psychosocial issues in their Sweet Success (pregnancy and diabetes) programs. Before that I worked directly as a Social Worker with pregnant women who had diabetes; I screened them for depression and provided education and support regarding a wide range of psychosocial issues. It also has a number of articles about when a person might need therapy, how to find a therapist and information about couples counseling. There are links to organizations as well as book lists and other useful information.
