Therapy for Change in Changing Times
I have been successfully coaching and counseling people in my private practice since 1990. Typically, my clients are looking to overcome obstacles to their optimum happiness and fulfillment. Many clients are working through unfinished business from their past experience, while many are more recently blocked or stuck in self defeating habits or behaviors. Together, clients and I draw upon a variety of understandings and tools from Western social psychological knowledge and Eastern traditions and philosophies.

Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

Evidenced-Based Therapy
“I work from a strength-based perspective, which uses the client's history as a guide but focuses on finding practical ways to bring healing and hope to the client's present challenges. I have several years of experience in working with individuals, couples, families and children in a therapeutic setting. Previously I worked in the Santa Cruz County Jail System to provide help with Anger Management training, dealing with PTSD, addiction issues, managing ADHD, coping with Bi-polar disorder, crisis intervention and support, domestic violence, and many other issues. Working with children I draw upon play and narrative therapy and my own experience as a father. I have experience with helping children work through grief and loss, teaching parents how to take the stress out of parenting and replace it with fun with the principles of Love and Logic Parenting, and many other issues.

Life Struggles &Transitions * Sex Therapy * Bipolar Disorder
Life is complex at all ages, yet knowing this does not necessarily help or give us direction. In my work, I try to help guide people through the complexities and nuances of life, examine choices and explore options, personal history, and experience. I have a deep respect for my clients, for their wisdom and their struggles. I provide an encouraging and non-judgmental space to look at each unique concern and situation. I often explore the role of meaning and choice in our lives, and how both powerfully (but often invisibly) affect how we live our days. While I work with many issues, I have specialties in sex therapy and bipolar disorder.

NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS CURRENTLY. Caring empathy.Learn to Find Happiness in all the right places. Many of us need support to integrate our emotional, intellectual, & spiritual awareness with life dreams, sexual relationships, & day-to-day commitments. I help my clients recognize and work through repressed or misdirected anger & other destructive patterns which inhibit self growth, self respect, intimacy, spirituality, or commitment in relationships. I help both individuals and couples, including treating anxiety, menopause, post traumatic stress, dissociation and life changes. We may work intensively (at least two hours a week) for short, contracted periods of time such as 2 or 3 months. During that period of meeting a minimum of two days a week, the therapy has the opportunity to build in intensity and increase its effectiveness. After that much intense, introspective work, we take a break for integration of the work on your own. First we negotiate the time period of the break, and if needed, a re-starting time. This empowering time period gives my clients a personal space to assimilate the work and let any positive changes be felt and integrated. I find that for many people this is the fastest way through change and/or crisis. If needed, I am always available by phone or email during the hiatus in therapy. I use a variety of techniques including EMDR, shamanic journey, hypnosis and imagery, talk, homework --whatever works at the time. Many of these techniques, useful life tools, can be incorporated by my clients into their everyday lives. I invite you to consider this form of intensive, condensed therapy as a useful way of dealing with our present life stresses and crises, although I am also available for once a week sessions as well. When COVID is no longer a. threat, Visit my peaceful hill top office only 8 minutes from the freeway. Wheelchair accessible. Private entrance and exit. Integrative Therapy for Children and Families
*Caring *Compassionate *Committed
Work load, sharing custody, co-parenting, anxiety, depression, loss, sickness and children acting out, are all difficult situations to deal with. While you struggle with these issues you are suffering and your family is suffering, Let me help you strengthen your family unit and increase your ability to deal with life's stresses. My approach to counseling is integrative and personal. During the assessment process I seek to utilize the "best fit" of techniques, tools and theory for each client. My theories of choice are developmental, cognitive behavioral, expressive art, play therapy, and solution focused therapy. I incorporate Applied Behavior Analysis principles throughout my work with families. I believe that it is important for families and children to be given the tools that they need to grow. This is best accomplished through an eclectic, personalized approach to therapy. Each person is unique and special, just as every family is. I seek to bring out and strengthen those unique qualities in families and children by utilizing strength based therapy.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Anxiety & Related Issues
Anxiety, OCD, Eating Disorders and Insomnia
The Cognitive Behavior Therapy Center of Silicon Valley in San Jose specializes in practical, goal-oriented therapy for Anxiety, OCD & Related Issues. Our mission is to offer compassionate and scientifically-based therapy tailored to its clients’ individual needs. The CBT Center specializes in Anxiety, OCD and related problems such as eating and sleep disorders and provides therapy for adults, children, teenagers and their families. The CBT Center’s primary focus is on the evidence-based treatment of anxiety and related disorders because there are subtle differences in how each anxiety disorder should be treated. While many therapists work with anxiety, the cognitive and behavioral approaches used at the CBT Center require extensive continuing education in the specific conceptualization for each person and evidence-based strategies for each disorder. We use a variety of cognitive and behavioral strategies depending on what the research indicates might be most effective for a particular problem. These interventions might include cognitive therapy, behavior therapy, exposure therapy, exposure and response prevention, dialectical behavior therapy skills for emotion regulation, mindfulness and acceptance-based therapies, and positive psychology. The CBT Center serves the Silicon Valley communities of San Jose, Saratoga, Mountain View, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Los Gatos, Los Altos, Palo Alto, Cupertino, and Campbell.

Since I enjoy working with many different ages, I provide psychotherapy and counseling to a wide range of clients; from preschoolers to retirees. What we have long suspected, and what science is now confirming, is that the relationship that develops in the therapy room is the most significant factor in the success of therapy. I understand how difficult starting the therapy process can be and do my best to make my clients feel comfortable and safe from the very beginning. I view the first few sessions as an assessment period for both of us since it is important that we both feel it is a good fit. I generally see my clients for 50 minute sessions, once a week. Occasionally, when it feels appropriate we'll meet a couple times in the week. The children's sessions are for 45 minutes. Please see my article on Children and Therapy for a more comprehensive description of my work with children.

Counseling in the Silicon Valley - Your Step to Wellness
Welcome! Counseling is a method to help you explore and reach new personal goals. We will work collaboratively as you begin to look at the areas of your life that bring you difficulty. In her Silicon Valley private practice, Beth uses a relational framework that integrates cognitive-behavioral, family systems and interpersonal-dynamic theories. Sometimes you can help yourself or can get help from friends and family. It is common for people to feel that they should be able to handle situations on their own but at other times it is more helpful to have an objective listener. Counseling can help you identify options, future goals and feelings to help enhance your emotional well-being. Counseling is considered an exchange of opinions and ideas to effectively problem solve daily living issues associated with emotional, cognitive, or behavioral problems. Therapy is not a teaching session but a relationship where you can learn about your life, your feelings and your choices. Sometimes this kind of learning is difficult, which is one reason therapy usually takes more than a few sessions. Therapy can often bring about a greater sense of empowerment to create powerful, lasting change.

I provide individual and couples counseling using an eclectic and humanistic approach. I also offer comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) offering skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and mindfulness skills. I was comprehensively trained by Marsha Linehan via BTech, the founder of DBT. I support people in managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, relationship issues and general life issues and love helping couples improve their communication and connection with one another. Developed at the University of Washington by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., ABPP, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) combines traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy methods with mindfulness and acceptance practices to treat emotional and behavioral problems and help clients create a more meaningful and fulfilling life. DBT teaches practical skills for clients to utilize in moments of crisis, difficult interpersonal situations, and problems of everyday living. Typically, clients participating in dialectical behavior therapy feel more in control of their emotions and moods and are less likely to let their emotions control them.

If You Are Considering Therapy, I Am Glad You Are Here
If you are considering therapy, I am glad you are here. I am a licensed psychotherapist in private practice. I believe that individuals possess the key to their own well being; however, sometimes life can present obstacles that are difficult to overcome. Most people come up against some sort of obstacle at least once in their lives. When this happens, it is helpful to have a professional ally to collaboratively look at these areas of concern. Teamwork is an important component in making therapy successful. Sometimes talking about what is on your mind enables you to see things from a different perspective and seeing things from a different perspective can be a key ingredient in promoting personal growth and making better choices in the future. A goal of psychotherapy is that you get to know yourself in such a way that you realize your full potential and are able to live more authentically. If you need a safe space to work through a tough time or gain new perspectives and develop a better understanding of yourself and your relationships, I am here to help.

Specialist in assisting with difficult relationships
Feelings of depression, loss, chaos or anxiety can be overwhelming and can interfere with everyday life. If you have developed destructive coping skills to manage painful events or depression/anxiety it is possible to learn new ways new ways of coping and process feelings. If you or your child or adolescent has developed disordered eating patterns, a significant loss such as death of a parent, divorce or separation, or any major life change it can be important to process and express feelings of loss or distress that you may or may not have felt before. I have a special interest in working with adults, children, families and couples that are experiencing big life changes or transitions that are difficult. I also encourage family involvement with eating disordered clients. I am a Registered Art Therapist and have experience in expressive and process based therapy, Sandtray, and Play Therapy. I can also help children during a divorce and help with co-parenting.

This is the basis for discovering your own capacity to make meaningful change and growth in your life. Self-inquiry practices are drawn from the fields of Depth Psychology, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Voice Dialogue, Meditative Inquiry, The Work of Byron Katie and somatic therapy methods such as EMDR and Hakomi. Short Term Science-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
C.B.T. for Lasting Change in Thinking and Feeling
I will use my 25 years of experience with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you learn new thinking and feeling skills to solve problems and create lasting change. With training at Yale, Stanford Medical School and the University of Washington, I offer effective CBT approaches for a variety of difficulties including: stress, anxiety, depression, OCD, marriage and couples problems, and other issues facing adults and older adolescents. In my practice, I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This is a scientifically-based therapy approach that has lots of research into its effectiveness with a wide variety of psychological problems. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a modern system of psychotherapy based on the age-old idea that what we think influences our emotions (how we feel), our behavior (how we act), and our physiology (our body reactions). According to this view, automatic thoughts that are distorted, exaggerated, mistaken, or unrealistic contribute to the negative emotional feelings that accompany many common problems, such as depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders. In other words, cognitive therapy assumes that people become depressed or anxious because of the way in which they interpret the events in their lives. It's not what happens, but how you view it, that determines how you feel.

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist who works with adults, couples, adult families, and groups in my general private practice. I know that there are confusing and difficult periods in anyone's life when a person may find he or she needs support/help from someone other than their friends or family. At these times, it can be a strange process to seek such assistance from a virtual stranger. In an effort to help you with this process let me share my approach to my work. My experience as a therapist has made me come to trust that individuals, with the help of another, have the capacity to know themselves better than anyone else, to access their own answers and wisdom, and attend to their own wounds. My belief is that people can grow and heal no matter how intense their difficult experiences, defenses and hurts may be. I view myself as the skilled and committed partner in this internal journey of exploration and emotional resolution. Specialized Areas of Interest & Training * I understand and know the experience of Depression and can sit with a person's deep pain as he or she explores its components and begins to heal. * For the past eight years I have been on the emotional journey of caring for my mother, who is living with dementia. As a result, it is my strong wish and intention to support other families who are dealing with the Alzheimer's disease process with a loved one. Currently, I offer a weekly Support Group in my private practice setting for any individual who is helping and relating to a person who is living with any type of Dementia * I have extensive training and interest in helping people with Bereavement & Loss in their lives. Whether the grief is the result of a divorce, the loss of a job, or the death of a loved one, it can be very helpful to work with a compassionate and experienced therapist who can accompany you through this often lonely and isolating process.

I work with high functioning people to help make their lives better. Through our work together, I help you to understand how your personality, gifts and talents, family roles, habits and worries affect your present relationships, career, and life choices. Together we look at options for healing and/or growing. Many request assistance with their anxieties, stresses, difficult emotions, depression, panic attacks, shyness, disorganization, or patterns in relationships and communications. Others want to know themselves better and to figure out what will make their life more fulfilling. We can work on your philosophies or how to make practical changes in your life. I have over 20 years of experience in working in the Palo Alto, San Francisco bay area. I provide Skype or Google talk video sessions to those who do not want to come to my office, or cannot come because of scheduling constraints, transportation issues or physical disabilities. This is a convenient way to have therapy in the comfort of your own venue, whether it is in your office, home, park bench or vacation spot!

It's Good to Have An End to Journey Towards,
But It's the Journey that Matters in the End
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist and a board certified art therapist. I am located in Palo Alto. My office is easily accessible, located on the first floor of the building with 2 entrances, one that connects directly to the small parking lot of the building and the other to the courtyard, which has multiple bathrooms and water, as well as a waiting room. I provide individual and family therapy for children, adolescents, and their parents, as well as adults. I offer the additional service of home visits or in-home therapy. My office hours are Monday through Thursday, while home visits or meetings can be scheduled throughout the week. I can schedule appointments for the evenings on an as needed basis, in which we can discuss the options available. My office is welcoming, open, and grounding with the hope of offering a sense of peace, inspiration, and calm. As I am an art therapist and work extensively with children, I have space dedicated for art making, play, and sandtray work. I employ my experiences and training, my background, my understanding and curiosity to better help and support your growth, change, and resiliency with the current issues that bring you in to begin working with me. I use a relationship and strength-based approach, which include active curiosity, empathy, and collaboration in the process of therapy. As much as therapy can often stigmatize and label, I work to identify and utilize the strengths, values, and skills already present, but maybe not yet apparent. Patience, acceptance, kindness, resilience, motivation, respect, and other such necessary values and skills, are integral to my approach and therapeutic work. These values and skills will be the very ingredients necessary to mobilize change and healing for you and your family.

I work in Palo Alto and San Francisco seeing individuals and couples. I lead a Writing for Healing group through Meet up that currently meets twice a month in Palo Alto. Are you feeling stuck with a problem or feelings that won't go away? Do you have flashbacks from the past or fears about the future, trouble sleeping, worries that go on and on? Have you tried therapy before but don't know where to turn now for help? Therapy is an important part of healing and finding the right fit is really important. I try to be as sensitive to your needs as possible, using my years of clinical experience, intuition, and theoretical training to help you find your way. I take your needs and wishes seriously and find ways to collaborate towards your desired goals. I am trained in using EMDR for healing trauma and other problems. I also have a special interest in writing for healing and using poetry for therapy. I use writing with individuals if it is helpful and indicated, and also with groups.

Therapy means many different things to different people. For some it is a journey of growth, self-awareness, and healing. For others it is necessary for them to survive. For some it is something they are mandated to do, and for many it is something they really want to do. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, I am here to support you through your process. Therapy is about where you are, where you want to go, what you want to explore, and joining you on your experience. I am here to guide you, focus you, support you and push you when needed.
