April Wright, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist LMFT
Mental Health Counselor/Therapist
Marina del Rey, CA 90292
California Licensed Individual, Couples, and Sex Therapy
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist that approaches therapy with a holistic point of view. Over the past twelve years, I have had the opportunity to work with many diverse people from various cultures, ages ranges, and socio-economic systems. Many of the issues I assist with include Trauma/PTSD, sexual assault/molestation, stress/panic attacks, chronic pain, and relationship dynamics. I am also an expressive art therapist. That means I use right and left-brain processes such as breathing exercises, meditation, dominant/non-dominant handwriting, dance/movement, collage and art to access deeper elements of self for whole body healing. My style is collaborative, empathic, compassionate, and with the utmost respect for your strengths and internal resources. I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, psychodynamic, mindfulness, expressive arts and somatic psychotherapy to ensure you are able to calm anxiety, thrive after trauma, and rediscover your most precious assets. We will explore all of you including your bio-psycho-social-spiritual values, beliefs, and thought patterns. As a holistic psychotherapist, we co-create a system that looks at your diet, lifestyle choices, spiritual/religious beliefs, and the mind/body connection that accesses deeper aspects of yourself for whole body healing. I specialize in working with youth, adults, couples, and groups; many of whom consider themselves part of the LGBTQ community struggling with a variety of tribulations including life transitions, strong emotions of anxiety and/or anger, trauma, spirituality, and grief/bereavement. Prior to psychotherapy, I worked in the government and private sectors of information technology. My experience has given me a deep understanding of what it takes to optimize leadership, C-level executives, and motivate employees for optimal performance. Through my leadership and team building retreats and workshops, your team can master critical thinking, expand creativity, and foster innovation for business development and growth.

Specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) For The
Treatment of OCD and Related Anxiety Based Conditions
The OCD Center Los Angeles is a private, outpatient clinic specializing in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and related anxiety-based conditions. Among the disorders we treat are: ~Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) ~Pure Obsessional OCD ~Perinatal / Postpartum OCD ~Social Anxiety / Social Phobia ~Panic Disorder ~Phobias ~Body Dysmorphic Disorder (body image anxiety) ~Hypochondria (health anxiety) ~Trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling) ~Dermatillomania (compulsive skin picking) Unfortunately, traditional psychotherapy has little impact on these conditions. Conversely, research has consistently found CBT to be the most effective treatment for these disorders. While treatment may last many years with traditional therapy, most clients make dramatic improvement with CBT in just 4-6 months. The OCD Center of Los Angeles has nine therapists on staff, all of whom specialize in using CBT to treat OCD and related anxiety based conditions. We treat adults, adolescents, and children. In addition to providing individual therapy, we also offers six low-fee therapy/support groups for adults with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related anxiety conditions. These groups are led by our staff therapists, and use the same treatment protocol as our individual Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy program. The OCD Center of Los Angeles also offers telephone and webcam-based online therapy. Telephone and online counseling are ideally suited to people in the following situations: ~ Those who have a physical condition which limits their mobility; ~ Those with psychological conditions which restrict travel; ~ Those who live in areas distant from our offices who are unable to find specialized care near their home. Both telephone and internet therapy have repeatedly been found to be safe and effective in numerous research studies, and have been legal in California since 1997. Our office is conveniently located just west of the 405 freeway in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, approximately one mile from the UCLA campus. We have office hours six days a week, including evening and Saturday appointments.

Transgender Expert
Gender Identity & Sexual Orientation Exploration
I have been a licensed marriage and family therapist in Los Angeles, CA for 24 years. My office is located in West Los Angeles and my office is comfortable, animal friendly and located near the 405 and 10 Freeways. I received my license in 1991 and my background is working with foster children. I started up several programs and found the work rewarding and difficult. Being a foster parent is a hard job because it was always the goal to reunify the child with their parents if at all possible. I started working with transgender people almost 20 years ago and have helped so many people transition to become themselves. I was an active member of the Los Angeles Gender Center for many years before going out on my own with a psychiatrist to start my own company called, Gender Wellness of Los Angeles that has been in practice for over 13 years. I have loved my work in the transgender community and am an active member of World Professional Association of Transgender Health. As an organization we were instrumental in getting Gender Identity Disorder removed from the DSM-IV and replaced it with Gender Dysphoria. It is no longer a mental disorder and is now considered a medical condition. As a member of this organization, I am active in working with policy and procedures for the transgender community and helping them get access to the best doctors, mental health providers and all other resources necessary for a happy and successful transition. My company is called Gender Wellness of Los Angeles and we are able to provide the necessary letters needed for hormones and sex confirming surgeries to the female to male and male to female transgender person. We provide individual, family and couples counseling as well as referrals to a psychiatrist for psychotropic medications if needed. Additionally, I work with the gay/lesbian population as well as anyone seeking therapy who wants to change behaviors that are no longer working for them in their lives. I use a direct approach and believe that the client and myself are a team working together to improve relationships to friends, family, co-workers and loved ones.
Eating Disorder Recovery for Women

Adult Women Face Different Recovery Challenges Than Teens
You Can Live a Better Life in Freedom
My Los Angeles private practice is dedicated to women wanting freedom from their eating disorder. I work with women with eating disorders and with adults who love a woman with an eating disorder. Author: Healing Your Hungry Heart. Making your appointment During that conversation you and I will determine if an in-person appointment seems like the best next step for you. If it is not, then I will do my best to refer you to the kind of treatment you both decide is in your best interest. If you do meet with me for a face to face appointment you will fill out required legal forms such as HIPPA, informed consent, basic client information, etc. which takes about five to eight minutes. Then you and I will talk. Often many powerful feelings come up quickly in that first meeting. I will give you emotional room to feel what you feel and time to share whatever you are willing to talk about. You will feel what it's like to be in a room with me. You will know if I seem to understand your situation and can be with you as you feel what you feel. You will know if I seem to know something and might be able to accompany you and support you on your recovery journey. You may feel rigid. You may feel sad or angry. You may feel relief and hope. You may feel all these things. If you do, and you're willing and I believe that I may be able to help you and work with you, then you will make another appointment. At that point we are building a relationship and a healing bond that supports your steps toward a more free life. Making an appointment for someone you love Mothers, fathers, husbands, boyfriends, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters call me to make appointments for the woman they care about who has an eating disorder. These people love and are worried about the suffering person. They may be looking for ways to convince their loved one to go into treatment. They may be helping that person by doing some scouting to find out what may be available in terms of treatment, and during their research they found me. However, only the person who will actually be in treatment can make the appointment. Adults with eating disorders can be resistant to getting help, and an adult cannot be forced into treatment. If you are trying to help someone who is unwilling to move toward recovery work, then I will suggest various kinds of support and perhaps therapy that might be helpful to you. If you are doing scout work for a person who is willing to go into treatment then I will have a conversation, sometimes quite lengthy, with you. I'll answer your questions and offer information that seems relevant for the situation you describe. The conversation can be lengthy because I will tell you that if the woman makes an appointment with me, this is the last conversation you and I will have. Once an adult makes an appointment with me I become that person's psychotherapist exclusively. I will refer family members to other clinicians if needed. For deep and effective work between my client and I to unfold, the client must know that what she says and feels is private, that the space is hers, that I will honor and safeguard boundaries and that the she doesn't have to share or reveal anything to anyone unless she so chooses. If you are calling for someone else I know you are suffering. I know you are probably in a delicate situation and are doing your best to encourage your loved one to get help without offending her. You want to find the best person possible who can help her, and you don't know who might be. You call me with hope and courage. I respect you for reaching out on your loved one's behalf. I will be as sensitive and straightforward with you as I can be.

~ Depression | Anxiety | Adult ADHD ~
You've gradually come to realize that you just have not been feeling yourself - whether it's the lack of energy, the terrible mood, or the bundle of nerves. It's been a few weeks, or even a few years, and all the things you've tried in order to lift yourself out of this slump haven't worked. You've found that turning to friends may help for the moment, but it's only temporary. It's time to take your emotional pain seriously enough to ask for the help you need and deserve. DEPRESSION is real; ANXIETY in all its many forms is real too. You're seeking a therapist who will begin by creating a safe place for you to express your feelings and your thoughts without being judged. You want the true issues you're struggling with to emerge and be understood. You want your therapist to "get" what your daily life feels like, and to be able to connect the dots about who and what made you who you are. Beyond that, you want her to have the expertise to know how to allow you to feel more deeply, to encourage you to explore thoughts that were set in stone long ago in order to get somewhere new, to have the skill to let your fears leave your nervous system, and the capacity to recognize the authentic you. You want to shed the depressed and anxious symptoms you walked in with, and to complete this therapy experience being empowered in new ways you haven't yet imagined. Please know that as a therapist, my energy is always balanced between the importance of deep inner change along with developing enhanced skill to act in the real world. For this reason, I have also devoted time to learning how to best help people who have Adult ADHD. Such folks need to meet so many challenges -- at work or school and at home with parents, partners and kids. It's my honor to be of service to individuals with these issues too.

Couples Counseling and Individual Psychotherapy
I offer psychotherapy services that will help you explore whatever it is that might be holding you back from living a vital and robust life. I can help you get your life on a track that will truly put you in touch with “happiness.” When we’re speaking to someone who is truly listening to us in a non-judgmental way we end up saying things we didn’t know we were going to say. This is therapeutic. When we talk to someone whom we feel truly hears us and “gets” us, who accepts us as we are . . . we begin to feel freer to reveal to that person (and, by proxy, to ourselves) more of who we really are. This is therapeutic. The healing that occurs in this safe space of speaking and being heard and seen is rarely duplicated in the world outside the consulting room. If you’re fortunate enough to have someone who gives you this kind of attention, then you know how precious that is. I create a safe space for revealing and discovering who you are, how you’re being in the world, and, if necessary, why? I help you find in yourself your preferred mode of being, to create more effective ways of getting what you want out of your life, and I work with you to execute a plan to make that happen. My work with couples (of any sexual orientation) includes conflict reduction, improving communication, and creating more intimate and ultimately satisfying relationships. There is often a breakdown in communication that takes place within a couple and leads to conflict, tension and even the dissolution of the bonded relationship altogether. Luckily, couples therapy addresses what is being said between two people, what is being heard, and what to do when the couple needs help finding a way to re-connect and enjoy each other again. There are few things more painful than feeling like you’ve lost the love you once shared with someone. If you’re in this position, you know exactly what I mean. It’s heartbreaking to feel disconnected from your loved one. Maybe the passion is missing, your day to day routine has dulled the spontaneity you once had, or you just don’t seem to know how to talk to each other anymore. I love working with couples because I get to be part of a process that allows people to restore their ability to experience companionship in a healthy and satisfying way. I now offer Skype sessions for your convenience.
