Use Who You Are to Change How You Are
At Keene Murray Therapy, our approach to helping people is: Creative. Our work is shaped both by our immersion in creative arts and by our extensive background in a variety of psychological approaches. Respectful. We recognize that our clients are the only ones who can truly tell their story. Our function is to help clients identify and achieve their goals. Non-pathologizing. We believe that most problems are simply former solutions that no longer work. We help clients discover more adaptive means to meet life's challenges. Collaborative. We value the interpersonal quality of a therapeutic relationship that acknowledges the effects and influences that both client and therapist contribute. Depth-oriented. Experience has shown us that significant change has its roots in the multi-layered interconnectedness of a person's inner life. We accompany clients as they explore and learn to navigate this strange and exciting territory. Groups I work with include: Elders facing adjustment or end-of-life issues, couples (including gays/lesbians) with relationship difficulties, families experiencing inter-generational problems, victims of trauma (e.g., car accidents, violent attacks, natural disasters), children and teens needing psychological assessment of intellectual and/or emotional functioning. We offer phone and video-conference therapy sessions. Home/site visits are available in our neighborhood. We operate on a fee-for-service basis, accepting payments by cash or check. We provide receipts for insurance reimbursement purposes. Check with your insurance company about their out-of-network policy.

Do you struggle with ongoing depression or anxiety?
Have you tried talk therapy without good results ?
Do you struggle with anxiety, fears and phobias or flashbacks and panic attacks. These symptoms of anxiety also cause depression. Have you tried to get rid of these symptoms using talk therapies alone? Have you been disappointed with those results? EMDR is an evidenced based therapy which lessens feelings of shame, fear, and other feelings that hold self judgment and self limiting beliefs . Beliefs are important because they drive our livesIf (especially the beliefs that are unconscious). EMDR is a process that can easily change your perspective and disempower these limiting beliefs. I use EMDR and EFT (emotional freedom techniques) for faster relief of symptoms of sadness, shame, and fears. These are the 2 therapy techniques that bring the fastest relief to clients in emotional pain.

Do you struggle to find meaningful communication and intimacy in a relationship? • Have you experienced trauma (an acute incident or a chronic pattern) that leaves you feeling frightened, frozen, or numb at certain times? Or perhaps you just feel depressed or unhappy more than you’d like, and can’t figure out why? • Are you concerned about your child or family? I value each person that I work with – it is an honor that they choose to share their lives with me. My goal with everyone is to provide services that facilitate an improved level of functioning and contentment in their lives. My style as a clinician is relaxed. Our sessions should be a positive interaction, even if we are discussing difficult issues. Whether a therapist or a coach, my sessions tend to have a feeling of two people relaxing in my living room and having a conversation. It is my job to make you comfortable and safe so that we can resolve the issues that have brought you to therapy. I do not sit back quietly, but instead engage with you to create movement and change towards a positive outcome. I look forward to talking with you.

Supportive, Interactive Psychotherapist
in a Comfortable Setting
Have you chosen to take the first step toward resuming control in your life? This is an excellent beginning toward creating and attaining your personal goals. This is a journey of self-discovery you will no longer make alone. I would enjoy helping you to overcome your fears and problems that are stopping you from moving forward. We will discuss issues (past and present) that have kept you immobile. From there, you will gain insight My therapeutic approach is a collaborative one; I believe in being interactive and encourage a dialogue while we work together in a professional, yet comfortable, setting. I have 30+ years of experience as a psychotherapist and although psychodynamically trained, I employ an eclectic approach because each individual is distinct. In addition to my work as a therapist, I have a background in the performing arts (dance and music) which gives me an understanding of issues related to performers.

Let Me Help You Find The Power You Already
Have Within Yourself
I believe that if we turn within, we can find the resources to deal with any problem and we can create a life of satisfaction, love and joy. My ideal client wants a safe, caring relationship in which to open up, share and be authentic. The journey to being oneself is very exciting and for me, therapy is about accepting oneself, expressing oneself and being honest. Doing this inner work with a guide naturally opens doors to connection and resolution of relationship and family problems and creates enthusiasm and a sense of satisfaction and purpose in one's life. I am a Yale/University of Michigan trained psychologist. I work with clients and teach in three graduate psychology programs. I emphasize learning to tolerate and express feelings openly and constructively and I try to be a real and trustable, open and honest, caring and accepting companion on this journey. I come from the humanistic tradition of psychologists who believe that a therapist is only as skilled as he/she is evolved or self-actualized him or herself. For me therapy is a subjective, authentic encounter. I enjoy getting to know my clients and sharing what I have learned on my journey to help them.”

Are your relationships troubled and disappointing? Do your fears and worries get in the way of your being your most creative, productive self? Do you sometimes find yourself in the same situations or repeating behaviors over and over, and you don't know how to find your way out? Habitual ways of reacting and behaving often began as the means of coping with the stresses of childhood, but are no longer useful or appropriate. I would like to help you become "unstuck", become less anxious and worried, feel more comfortable with yourself and happier with your relationships and work. In sessions, I work to listen deeply and create an accepting atmosphere. There, you can become curious about your thoughts, feelings and actions, explore how your past is influencing your life today and confront the repeating patterns of emotional reaction and behavior that get in the way of your finding satisfaction in your relationships and work. My approach to therapy is eclectic with a strong psychodynamic base for understanding the problems that bring people to seek help. In addition to my training in psychology, my early training was as a dance/movement therapist and I continue to have an interest in the connection between mind, body and emotions and the nonverbal aspects of communication and relating.

NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS CURRENTLY. Caring empathy.Learn to Find Happiness in all the right places. Many of us need support to integrate our emotional, intellectual, & spiritual awareness with life dreams, sexual relationships, & day-to-day commitments. I help my clients recognize and work through repressed or misdirected anger & other destructive patterns which inhibit self growth, self respect, intimacy, spirituality, or commitment in relationships. I help both individuals and couples, including treating anxiety, menopause, post traumatic stress, dissociation and life changes. We may work intensively (at least two hours a week) for short, contracted periods of time such as 2 or 3 months. During that period of meeting a minimum of two days a week, the therapy has the opportunity to build in intensity and increase its effectiveness. After that much intense, introspective work, we take a break for integration of the work on your own. First we negotiate the time period of the break, and if needed, a re-starting time. This empowering time period gives my clients a personal space to assimilate the work and let any positive changes be felt and integrated. I find that for many people this is the fastest way through change and/or crisis. If needed, I am always available by phone or email during the hiatus in therapy. I use a variety of techniques including EMDR, shamanic journey, hypnosis and imagery, talk, homework --whatever works at the time. Many of these techniques, useful life tools, can be incorporated by my clients into their everyday lives. I invite you to consider this form of intensive, condensed therapy as a useful way of dealing with our present life stresses and crises, although I am also available for once a week sessions as well. When COVID is no longer a. threat, Visit my peaceful hill top office only 8 minutes from the freeway. Wheelchair accessible. Private entrance and exit. “I'm the product of 20 years of therapeutic practice and have attended to over 1,800 clients. I'm eclectic - I work in many modes -cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, existential. Each client is assessed at the beginning, middle and end of therapy. I customize my approach to my clients' symptoms, their character & their talents. I have no ideal client but I press hard to go beyond clichés and stereotypes. I look for a "healing fiction" that is practical & useful. My specialty - way beyond techniques of behavioral, cognitive and inter active and psychodynamic modes - I believe is that I am quick to cut to the chase with fresh insights. I believe I listen well and am direct. I work cross culturally; across gender and race. I'm a patient advocate. I team up with ancillary helpers to move clients through their issues. I have won awards for my work with Multiple Sclerosis and with older adults. I am a published writer and I nurture my clients' creativity.”

When Life Is Overwhelming, I Focus Upon
Giving You the Tools that Can Bring Immediate Relief.
I provide individual, couples and group psychotherapy. Although I have worked with many clients with varying issues, my specialties include issues of loss and bereavement, life-threatening illnesses (such as cancer), depression, anxiety and fertility issues. I have particular interest in working with suicide survivors (individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide), families dealing with grief and loss, cancer patients, young adults dealing with illness, couples dealing with fertility issues. Since much of my focus is grief and loss issues, I have the most experience with clients that are in great distress. I strive to concentrate on the present, focus on the future and explore the past to understand current behaviors and coping. I create a safe place where clients can focus on their goals and acquire more coping tools to adjust to life changes.

If you are reading this, you may very well be suffering and in need of support to live your life with less dread and more joy, less doubt and greater assurance, less anger and more self-control. If you are seeking services, you are already moving in the right direction by identifying the intent and developing the motivation needed to affect desired changes. A plethora of support services exist, and if you can receive the help you need from less-intensive and/or less-expensive sources, I encourage you to do so. Thankfully there are many self-help groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Gamblers Anonymous, as well as the National Alliance on Mental Illness that can offer great support on the road to recovery. In fact, if you retain my services, I would most likely suggest that you and your family increase and refine your connections to the community, church, and support groups that promote positive growth and well being. Change is not only possible, it is inevitable. Too often we live our lives as though we are permanently enslaved and predestined to be wasted in self-inflicted pain. Most people have moments of clarity in which they understand and appreciate the ability to willfully change the causes and conditions of their lives, but sadly they are caught up in circumstances and surrounded by people who are deeply invested in the familiarity of suffering. As such, opportunities for change are unfulfilled

We often lose touch with who we truly are and our priorities
My approach to psychotherapy is humanistic, psycho-dynamic and relational. I view healing of the whole person as part of an individual’s natural development and growth. This therapeutic process provides an introspective, empathetic focus, aimed at understanding, removing emotional blocks and moving toward ongoing growth. After assessing the individual's concerns, needs and goals, I make psychiatric referrals when necessary for prescriptive treatment and work closely with the psychiatrist, so that collaborative treatment planning and treatment options can be considered. I believe the relationship between the client and therapist is where the most significant healing occurs. Psychotherapy becomes a creative process, incorporating mindful attentiveness to one's self as well as the self of the other. The healing of mind, body and spirit merges into a solid foundation of the integrated self. Through the use of a variety of approaches such as psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and attachment theory, I offer a warm, accepting environment for the disclosure of emotions, experiences and secrets that may be difficult to discuss or have been held inside. Throughout our work together, we will bring awareness and light to the areas of your life where you feel stuck. Therapy can be a place to unravel your life story in order to “make sense” of it. The weaving of past stories, events, feelings and traumas, with current emotions, patterns, stressors and events will enable you to integrate the past with the present.

We strive to maintain the privacy of our clients so that you can feel comfortable sharing very personal matters and participating in the therapeutic process. Psychotherapy involves letting your therapist get to know you. In the course of doing so your therapist will begin to say things to you that help you develop a better self-awareness. We will help you realize skills you possess that you can utilize to help yourself and to get along better with others. We will often suggest ways that you can test ideas or practice new skills during the time between appointments. Psychotherapy has been shown to be very helpful. It can help lead to better relationships, improved communication, and a significant reduction of feelings of unhappiness or distress. It can help you resolve specific problems, or increase the range of choices in your life so that it can be more satisfying and productive. You should be aware that sometimes clients that start therapy feel worse before feeling better. Psychotherapy sometimes involves recalling unpleasant aspects of your past history. Our job is to help you understand and cope with all of this in a way that helps you to feel better and have a better future. Our staff is experienced in a wide range of therapeutic styles. Each of us has individual interests and skills. We work together as a team when different family members need different kinds of help. We are glad to coordinate our efforts with other professionals that might be helping you at the same time (such as your medical doctor). We try very hard to protect the privacy of our clients. California law protects the confidentiality of communications between a client and a mental health provider. Information about our clients is only released when we have your permission. We will always discuss with you, in advance, how we want to respond to requests from others about you.

Spiritual Therapy to Transform Your Inner
Demons to Inner Angels
Anger is just energy we generate when there is a difference between what we want and what we have. There are two types of anger, corrosive anger and authentic anger. Corrosive anger is just energy to change what is, to something worse. Corrosive anger is just unhealthy energy and the ultimate source of our lack of health, abundance and joy. Authentic anger is just energy to change what is, to something better. Authentic anger is just healthy energy and can produce a Garden of Eden on our planet. My publications and coaching are concerned with helping to make you aware of how you can choose to transform your corrosive energy into your authentic healing energy. You can then choose to live a better life, on your journey to the life of your dreams. Only hire me when you are ready to find out how to transform your corrosive energy into useful authentic healing energy to do what you really want to do at your highest levels. Only hire me when you are ready to be grateful and responsible for your own past and present results. One of the major premises of my publications and coaching is that we are totally responsible for our own results from our own decisions. We are the ones who decide what to accept, reject or modify from others. We are the ones who got ourselves to where we are and have made countless previous decisions, including how to respond to the decisions of others. My responsibility is to write and tell what I know has worked for me and some others in my experiences and what I believe so far. I only know what works best for me and some others. You will need to determine what works best for you, since everyone is unique. It is up to you, to find your own inner and outer team resources and your own choice of your spiritual growth path. When you need medical or other information, please go to the medical or other experts of your choice. I am not here for direction, I am just producing information for your consideration and choice. My emphasis is on spiritual health, wealth, and happiness. What happens on the physical level may be or may not be as rapid as what happens on the spiritual level.

Therapy Is Not a Lifestyle.
Therapy is not a lifestyle, it is a process. Dealing with the difficulties of life can cause distressing feelings which can interfere with your relationships and general well being. My hope is that when confronted by such distress, our work together will serve to guide you through these obstacles. Used as a tool, therapy can restore or discover your sense of balance. As your therapist, my role is to assist you in utilizing your strengths to attain that goal. Through this process, we will identify the influences or circumstances that decrease your satisfaction and discover the tools needed to overcome them. No matter if you're experiencing anxiety, depression, or general dissatisfaction, we will work as a team to identify your goals and use your strengths to achieve them. We will create the tools that work best for you to maintain your balance and utilize should you experience distress in the future. Using brief-solution focused therapy or an insight-oriented long term approach, my clients have overcome grief/loss, identified strategies for coping in difficult relationships, developed parenting skills, resolved childhood trauma, eliminated self destructive behaviors and navigated phase of life difficulties. We will apply the approach that best suits you.

Effective Psychotherapy
My specialty is work with writers, visual artists, and other creative professionals. My goal is for clients to feel comfortable talking about whatever is on their mind, in an environment that feels warm, genuine, caring, and spontaneous. During sessions, I listen intently as clients speak and ask questions that are illuminating. Together, we explore the past’s influence upon the present, and how each person’s individual psychology colors the way they see the world. My training in psychodynamic psychotherapy has proven to be effective in this regard. I successfully help people struggling with depression, anxiety, and/or problems with self-esteem. Other times, people come to me because they suspect they have a role in ‘what is' but can’t put a finger on how, and what to do to make things better. Psychological healing and growth can lead to all sorts of positive changes, not just relief from emotional pain. Ideally, relationships with important others improve, and vocations and avocations become a source of maximum fulfillment. I devote myself 100% towards this end for every person I see.

Panic? Anxiety? Distress?
I am a creative therapist. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting, and a Master's degree in Social Work, I often find myself bringing that creativity into my practice. I believe that each client's needs are unique, and I tailor my skills to your needs. I have had a broad range of clinical experience, specializing in cognitive behavioral, motivational interviewing, and EMDR therapy. I believe that my past experience with residential, day and outpatient treatment, managed classrooms and educational settings has given me a large arsenal of skills and abilities. Also, experience with multiple and varied populations has heightened my ability to see the underlying issues and assist my client's in recognizing and altering their current behavior to reach their goals. I was trained in EMDR at the beginning of 2009, and am now a certified with EMDRIA. I have had significant success with issues such as communication skills, anxiety and stress reduction, depression management and reduction, release of past traumatic memories (ie. abuse, serious accidents, witnessing horrific events, etc), relationship issues, parenting skills, behavior management, and grief and loss.

Grief Therapist
Having better relationships is the focus of my practice. I work with individuals and couples to help explore issues that get in their way. Sometimes it's simply a matter of learning better communication skills. Sometimes there are past hurts that are creating the obstacles. Together we can develop a plan to help you reach your goals. I also specialize in Grief Therapy. The death of a loved one or unexpected relationship changes are profound losses. But there are other loses besiders death: divorce, moving to a new town, aging, empty nest syndrome, and the list goes on.I have a special interest in women's issues, especially women who have experienced early mother loss.lives. Besides seeing clients in private practice, I am a Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy at California State University, Dominguez Hills. I teach Human Communication and Legal and Ethical Issues of Counseling to therapists, social workers, and psychology graduate students. If you want to improve your relationship with both yourself and others, let's begin a dialogue and see if it's a good fit.

Therapy that Works
I am the sole practitioner at ABC Solutions which offers individual, family, and couple counseling. My approach is solution focused and narrative—looking at the presenting problem and finding solutions within the story the client tells about his/her life. I adhere to the systemic approach when looking at families—believing the system has created the problem rather than one person in the family being the problem. I include many cognitive/behavioral techniques such as homework, repeated affirmations, goal sheets, hand outs, in session practice, and other behavioral techniques to assist with quick change. While most problems can be dealt with in this manner, a client’s history often has an impact on “stuckness” and past issues will be taken in to account if necessary. The initial assessment always includes a brief history of family, work, medical, social environmental, alcohol and drug use, along with previous treatment and risk assessment (suicidality and homicidality). With any significant finding a more in depth evaluation may be necessary. I have experience and training in parenting, premarital therapy, play therapy, couple issues, gay and lesbian issues, trauma, anger management, mood disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, depression, anxiety, compulsive disorders, health related issues, co-dependence, eating disorders, women’s issues, stress management, post traumatic stress disorder, occupational issues, life management, bereavement, adolescent issues, domestic violence, incest survivors and sexual dysfunction. I work with all ages face to face but can not provide play therapy for children telephonically for obvious reasons. Though I have worked with trauma survivors extensively, many trauma treatments require face to face counseling. I cannot do EMDR telephonically. I believe in the power of my clients to heal themselves with guidance and education. By applying the skills they will learn in the therapy sessions they can transform their lives. I also believe that by changing your thinking you can change your life. Your feelings come for your thinking. Even when “out there” circumstances seem to control your life, you can choose how to perceive them. I help you take charge of your life.

Clients Say I Am Easy to Talk To, Practical and Trustworthy
My Mission is to provide the best quality of care to individuals, couples and families alike. Whether you are confronted with a current issue in your life such as a divorce, relationship issue, career transition or a long standing issue such as an eating disorder or depression, I can help you address the issues and discover solutions to your problems. I use a variety of strategies to help you move forward in your life such as cognitive behavioral therapy, stress management strategies, visualization techniques and re-framing techniques. If assessments will be helpful, I am trained to administer a variety of assessments - among them career, leadership and stress management assessments. I am a trained mediator and help couples move through conflict to develop positive solutions to their family transition. If you are afraid you will never have a relationship you will learn how "fear stops you and why" so that you can clear your negative blocks and move into your positive future. My clients tell me that I am easy to talk to, practical and trustworthy. Although, I am not on insurance panels, I do my best to work with you to develop a fee scale that you can afford. If I am unable to help you, I will do my best to refer you to the appropriate resource.

Experienced, Empathic Psychotherapist
I have been a psychotherapist in private practice for over 25 years. I work with individuals and couples and specialize in a wide range of treatment issues including, anxiety, depression, relationship and marriage problems. I have a particular interest in working with people who have concerns regarding intimacy and problems developing long-term relationships, separation anxiety, parenting, creative blocks, empty nest syndrome, chronic pain and family and work conflicts. I work with many young adults who struggle with transitioning into adulthood and finding their own voices. Although the idea of starting therapy can be scary, it can also be exciting. Therapy is a process of discovery about you which can help you create the life and relationships that really work. It is a process where I help you to talk and learn about your thoughts and feelings. As we focus on the issues you bring to therapy, our talks will affect the ways in which you relate to the world and the impact the world has on you. My clinical approach is not based on one particular theory. I don’t see what I do as “one size fits all.” As I get to know you, the theoretical approach or approaches I take will evolve from our work together. I recognize and respect how different we all are. This means I make a particular effort to work without judgment. I am available for sessions in my office or on the phone.

Give Yourself the Day You Want to Have!
I have been in practice for over 15 years, and have found that rather than waking up each day and approaching the day as the one we believe we are supposed to have, I help clients reach for the kind of day they want to have. I work with individuals, couples, children and families, and engage with them in the dynamic that they bring in. Once we define the parts of that dynamic that is not functioning at an optimal level for them, we acknowledge it, address it, process why it exists and then attempt to reconfigure it so that all parties are closer to their desired experience. Rather than approach a therapeutic situation from one particular perspective, I use an ecclectic array of modalities so that I may reach each client in a way that meets their needs. I work Mondays through Fridays, from 8 am til 7 pm. My office is conveniently located in Beverly Hills, with easy parking.

It's Good to Have An End to Journey Towards,
But It's the Journey that Matters in the End
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist and a board certified art therapist. I am located in Palo Alto. My office is easily accessible, located on the first floor of the building with 2 entrances, one that connects directly to the small parking lot of the building and the other to the courtyard, which has multiple bathrooms and water, as well as a waiting room. I provide individual and family therapy for children, adolescents, and their parents, as well as adults. I offer the additional service of home visits or in-home therapy. My office hours are Monday through Thursday, while home visits or meetings can be scheduled throughout the week. I can schedule appointments for the evenings on an as needed basis, in which we can discuss the options available. My office is welcoming, open, and grounding with the hope of offering a sense of peace, inspiration, and calm. As I am an art therapist and work extensively with children, I have space dedicated for art making, play, and sandtray work. I employ my experiences and training, my background, my understanding and curiosity to better help and support your growth, change, and resiliency with the current issues that bring you in to begin working with me. I use a relationship and strength-based approach, which include active curiosity, empathy, and collaboration in the process of therapy. As much as therapy can often stigmatize and label, I work to identify and utilize the strengths, values, and skills already present, but maybe not yet apparent. Patience, acceptance, kindness, resilience, motivation, respect, and other such necessary values and skills, are integral to my approach and therapeutic work. These values and skills will be the very ingredients necessary to mobilize change and healing for you and your family.
