I have focused the majority of my clinical career helping clients break the destructive, reactionary patterns of anger, to provide relief, and hope, for growth and change. I show clients healthy ways to voice their needs and wants and how to heal from past pain. I believe that given the safety of the therapeutic process, clients will emerge, and show their authentic selves’. It is through this process where couples learn to validate the others experience and truly hear one another’s needs and wants. Restored connection comes from becoming present: leaving the past behind and removing conditions of the future. Once clients can connect in this way, they use their own inherent strengths to make the changes they need. They become compassionate and responsive to the other. Not all couples are able to repair the damage caused by years of fighting and hurting one another. Sometimes the fear of being alone can keep couples stuck. Sometimes it is children that keep couples stuck. Sometimes the decision is made to separate, and divorce, but they are unable to do so in a constructive way. I help couples to move forward, toward separation/ divorce, in a very clear, conscious way.

Heal yourself and consciously create your life!
individuals, Couples and Families
Since 1995, I have been privileged to assist individuals, couples and families to confront their challenges, limitations and entanglements in order to find greater health, joy and fulfillment. I know that you already have all that is needed for your own healing and manifestation and it is my goal to gently and respectfully facilitate the connection to and integration of your innate gifts. The clients drawn to Integrative Therapy are in various stages of transformation and are seeking additional tools to support their process. Many clients are experiencing a spiritual crisis and have lost touch with and faith in their higher guidance. Others may be “stuck” in old patterns that no longer serve them. Our work together provides a safe space to explore and release entanglements, limitations and blockages in order to experience their inner truth. Some clients may be physically, mentally and/or emotionally challenged by illness or injury. In our work we decode the messages inherent in their symptomology to broaden the scope of their healthcare choices. Our work together will be of limited duration because you will gain the necessary tools to release your blockages, balance and integrate your energies and tap into your soul’s guidance.

"Therapist to the Therapy"
I am an empathic human being and a highly trained Certified Psychoanalyst, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Credentialed Alcoholism Counselor. I help others manage and resolve difficulties of the heart -- love, loss and work during significant life changes; for example, career change, death/illness in family, divorce, relapse with addiction(s), criminal arrests, loss of work, etc. I am committed to providing high-quality professional assessment and counseling/psychotherapy to people who have not accessed or have had prior unsatisfactory experiences with psychotherapy. I am also committed to travel the lengthy road of psychoanalysis with people who want to take this voyage. A second arm of my private practice is "Second Opinions": Some consumers are in a "stalemate" in their present "therapy"-- where there is a serious impasse and "work" is forfeited. I consult with individuals who can no longer productively work in their current therapy, oftentimes beginning to resolve major impasses. On occasion, the individual's therapist volunteers to be part of this process. In some cases, fruitful work is resumed. In other instances, a decision to leave the current therapy ensues. My interest in psychotherapy is borne by helping clients learn about themselves in seeing things differently—not changing their world, but having new eyes. By engaging in this process one finds obstacles in the past that impinge in reaching one’s full potential in the present. Psychotherapy is helpful in working through such issues by addressing the underlying emotions and bringing them into awareness. One may achieve a sense of inner peace and emotional freedom, making possible more fulfilling relationships with oneself and others. A third arm of my private practice is assistance to criminal defense attorneys specializing in high-profile white collar crime and DWI/DUIs. I have navigated the field of expert witness and prepared confidential psychiatric reports as well as prepleading memoranda to help individuals and their counsel have a win-win situation.

Our problems with our friends lovers families and workmates, frequently reflect our struggles with our selves. Feeling stuck, lost chronically angry or unhappy, can result from conflicts and feeling states inside us that we are unaware of. Also, unresolved issues from the past, can result in chronic emotional disruption and pattens of thinking feeling and perceiving that work against us I provide the kind of focused listening and safe, relaxed environment that allows each individual I work with to develop a self awareness and self acceptance that lead internal and external changes. I do insight oriented psychotherapy combined with EMDR, and other techniques that are geared toward faster resolution of old issues, and paving the way toward making change.

Psychotherapy for Feeling Better
Perhaps you want to expand your life, have richer and less problematic relationships, do work that is more gratifying and more engaging of your creativity. In short, you want a better life, and it's begun to feel as if time is passing you by. In therapy, you and I will work together so you may develop the courage to stand behind yourself, while also enjoying intimate relationships. We will find ways of listening to your deepest voice. The goal is to help you gain inner freedom--the freedom to be yourself, to love genuinely, and to do your best work. Incessant self-questioning and self-doubt can be exhausting. How do we change the attitudes and patterns that keep us stuck? Contemporary brain science has brought a lot to the therapy table. We now know how to teach people, through their own mental efforts, how to change the structure of their brains so that it can begin to function in new and healthier ways. Consider these negative, or self-doubting ideas: I'm too old to be single. I'm too self conscious to take a dance class (or work out in a gym). I've missed my chance in life. I don't look good enough to attract someone. These are false thoughts, and people spend years of their lives believing them. Even when they know they're dysfunctional and rob them of joy in life, they're convinced these negative ideas are impossible to get rid of. They're not. We have many new techniques and methodologies to help patients change their negative negative thought processes and begin feeling about themselves in entirely new ways. One method that I use with my patients is called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Big mouthful, I know, but it's actually a very straight forward way of helping people re-process their negative thinking. During EMDR therapy the patient attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. I use an audio device that produces pleasant tones (they go back and forth from the left ear to the right, via headphones.) The patient listens to the tones while thinking about a fear or an unpleasant or even frightening experience. Every minute or so I check in to see how the patient is feeling and what she or he is thinking. This way we can both monitor what's happening in the patient's mind . We can also introduce new and more positive ways of thinking about the material the brain is working on. In my practice I've found that EMDR can produce marked mental/emotional improvement in a relatively brief period of time. Sometimes the effects of trauma make it hard to trust others. Sometimes depression drains us of emotional energy. I am trained to treat trauma, anxiety and depression. The patient's ability to feel safe in my office comes first. We work together in an atmosphere of warmth and calm. This is the patient's journey. I will listen deeply to your words and feelings and perceptions, and help us toward a deeper understanding of who you are and where you want to be in life. Blending conventional and alternatives approaches to therapy, I draw on a variety of styles and techniques, incorporating what is most helpful to the individual. EMDR is one tool I use. I also teach patients special breathing techniques for calming anxiety and being able to regulate their emotions. Once they've learned different mindfulness techniques people become able to regulate overwhelming or flooding emotions, whether it be fear, or rage, or irritability, or sadness. It's very empowering when the brain can tame emotions.

Are your relationships troubled and disappointing? Do your fears and worries get in the way of your being your most creative, productive self? Do you sometimes find yourself in the same situations or repeating behaviors over and over, and you don't know how to find your way out? Habitual ways of reacting and behaving often began as the means of coping with the stresses of childhood, but are no longer useful or appropriate. I would like to help you become "unstuck", become less anxious and worried, feel more comfortable with yourself and happier with your relationships and work. In sessions, I work to listen deeply and create an accepting atmosphere. There, you can become curious about your thoughts, feelings and actions, explore how your past is influencing your life today and confront the repeating patterns of emotional reaction and behavior that get in the way of your finding satisfaction in your relationships and work. My approach to therapy is eclectic with a strong psychodynamic base for understanding the problems that bring people to seek help. In addition to my training in psychology, my early training was as a dance/movement therapist and I continue to have an interest in the connection between mind, body and emotions and the nonverbal aspects of communication and relating.

Free your mind. Free your life.
You can learn to honor your pain/struggle without suffering.
My favorite author once wrote, “It is the peculiar nature of the world to go on spinning no matter what sort of heartbreak is happening,” which inevitably means that there are times in everyone’s life when living becomes too heavy, complicated, confusing, painful and/or difficult to manage. I, personally, know that feeling all too well. But what if you could learn to honor and express your heartbreak, your pain and your struggle without suffering through it or allowing it to control you? What if you could learn to manage the stress of tomorrow by choosing to live mindfully today? Pain is inevitable and often uncontrollable, as we are all intensely experiencing now in the midst of COVID-19. I know it can feel unfair and overwhelming, but, while pain may be unavoidable, suffering is a choice based on how we process, cope, and react to challenges that life throws our way. Each of us has the power to choose differently and to create positive change. With the right guidance and support, you can learn to free your mind, and, in doing so, free your life. Passionate about fusing traditional psychotherapy with an integrative and holistic approach, I offer an opportunity to connect mind and body. I specialize in working with diverse individuals and families, especially teens and young adults who are experiencing anxiety and stress, relationship challenges, life transitions low self-esteem and depression.

Don't just survive. Thrive!
What is holding you back? I work with young adults who don't know the answer to that question, who are struggling with life transitions, finding a purpose, and may be having a life "crisis." Often my clients are dealing with depression and anxiety related to difficulty making decisions, are stuck in an unsatisfying job, or are feeling confused and uncertain about the next step in their life. My goal is to help you understand what you want and what's holding you back. I help by exploring underlying resistance/barriers to accomplishing your goals. I help you face your fears by using a combination of CBT, to understand and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs, and EMDR which helps to work through and integrate important memories from your past to help you succeed. Together we can go deeper so you can see lasting change and discover your best self. Together we can work to figure out your purpose. During sessions, I listen intently as clients speak and ask questions that are illuminating. Together, we explore the past’s influence upon the present, and how each person’s individual psychology colors the way they see the world. My training in psychodynamic psychotherapy has proven to be effective in this regard. I successfully help people struggling with depression, anxiety, and/or problems with self-esteem. Other times, people come to me because they suspect they have a role in ‘what is' but can’t put a finger on how, and what to do to make things better. Psychological healing and growth can lead to all sorts of positive changes, not just relief from emotional pain. Ideally, relationships with important others improve, and vocations and avocations become a source of maximum fulfillment. I devote myself 100% towards this end for every person I see.

I believe that change is possible no matter how entrenched one may be in a given situation. I accept Aetna and Medicare. Therapist for Gay Men
Individual & Couples.
Specializing in working with Gay and lesbian on identity issues, anxiety, problems with intimacy, sexual addiction, communication skills, self-esteem and self-image, personal growth, life transitions, depression, past trauma, adoption, relationship, family issues, immigration issues, survivors of sexual abuse and HIV/AIDS. Late evening appointments. When facing life's difficult challenges, it is good to know that there are places that you can turn to for help and guidance. However, finding a therapist can be anxiety producing because when people decide they would benefit from seeing a therapist, they are often experiencing significant upset in their lives. This is usually not the ideal moment to be dealing with the stress involved in finding someone with whom it feels safe and right to be vulnerable. I am aware of this and I want you to know that when we meet you will find yourself in a comfortable setting where you will be able to tell your story in strict confidence and without the worries of judgment or pressure of any type. We will discuss what you are interested in working on and how I will be able to help you. There will be no pressure to make any decisions or commitments.

SLIDING SCALE PSYCHOTHERAPY
NYC AFFIRMATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY LCSW PLLC is a community focused sliding scale mental health practice in Manhattan. Our mission is simple: provide affirmative psychotherapy in a sustainable way to the community. By affirmative we mean that we do not view individuals from the perspective of being defective or needing to be fixed. We instead recognize the innate strengths that continue to allow people to function while enduring difficult life circumstances. Challenging childhoods and distressing adult experiences, coupled with the toxic impact of systemic oppression, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and xenophobia impact our mental health. Our goal is to fill a gap in mental health services provided to those that are historically marginalized and disenfranchised. We strive to be culturally aware and trauma-informed. Most importantly, we’re here to help you feel better and make change. We firmly believe that change is possible. Contact us today to get started.
