What matters to you, matters to us.
Life can get complicated. You may be trying all that you know how to do to make things better for yourself or for someone you love but have run out of energy, ideas or both. You may have a relationship with someone you love but you just can't seem to get along. You may be a parent trying to best figure out how to help a child or teen who is having problems. You may feel burdened by sadness, fear or stress.Or, perhaps you have old wounds that seem to keep interfering with you creating the life you want. All of our therapists have advanced training in couples and family therapy, addictions treatment (including internet, pornography, gambling, etc.) trauma and stress recovery, to name a few. We have many years of experience in helping people heal from depression and anxiety, sexual dysfunction, affairs, and compulsive overeating as well. We will be glad to spend some time with you by phone to make sure that we are a good fit. We won't just sit silently, but we will do everything we can to listen and help you heal and move forward, move on.

Psychotherapy
My first question to any new client is, “How will you know when therapy is over?” This helps us both to define the goals of therapy. Together, we’ll focus on solutions to problems, and build on the strengths already there. I’ve been a therapist for children, adults, and families on the North Shore for ten years. My private practice is located in Glenview, Illinois and I work with families and individuals from the surrounding communities including Northbrook, Northfield, Deerfield, Glencoe, and Highland Park as well. I work with clients on issues including anxiety, trauma, divorce, separation, loss, depression, asperger’s, and other spectrum disorders. I provide a safe and relaxing environment that’s designed to help facilitate healing and change.

Solution-Focused Counseling and Psychotherapy
I'm a solution-focused therapist with 30 years experience helping people change their lives. Do you have patterns that keep landing you in unhappy relationships? Do you have core beliefs about yourself and others that limit your happiness and well-being? Do you suffer from depression, anxiety, addiction or relationship distress? My job as your therapist is to help you identify core issues and patterns that impede your well-being and, in partnership with you, develop strategies for improving how you function, think and act in the world. My style is interactive, warm, compassionate, and sometimes humorous. Therapy should produce tangible change, not just insight. Working with the right therapist can have an enormous impact on the quality of your life. Why wait another minute? Let's talk.

I'm aware of how hard it is to talk about personal problems. You feel vulnerable, confused, embarrassed, angry, afraid, and childlike. You feel stuck at a certain level of understanding or problem solving and can't bounce back. You wish you could talk to someone who won't judge you, but would listen deeply and help you recapture hope and meaning in your life and relationships. I believe I can help. I provide a safe place where you and your partner can understand how your feelings and thoughts affect the ways you act, react, think, feel, and relate. I am interested in hearing your story with all the twist and turns of your personal history. When you share your story I will listen and give you back new meanings so you can learn more about yourself and your partner in a new way. Together we will figure out how to resolve your painful conflicts, discover what triggers your emotional reactivity, explore your life's journey more deeply, and if possible, develop new ways to heal your past and revision your future

I specialize in and successfully work with individuals and couples who want to explore and make changes in areas such as depression, anxiety, addiction and recovery, low self-esteem, relationships, and improving communication. Psychotherapy is a collaboration between the client and the therapist, working together to help you achieve your goals. Individual Psychotherapy My clients are usually adults who are intelligent, questioning, and insightful. They have many strengths and skills but find themselves either facing things they don't want (worry, depression, communication problems) or feeling blocked in achieving things they do want (career change, a good relationship, more self-confidence). We will work together to understand what is going on, how your present situation may have gotten to where it is now, and how you would like to see things evolve in the future. Patterns that were useful or even necessary in earlier parts of your life may be getting your way now. Sometimes the simple act of hearing yourself discuss your thoughts and concerns with a caring, nonjudgmental professional helps untangle some "emotional knots." People are capable of amazing changes and accomplishments; counseling can help you realize the best in yourself. An initial assessment appointment is about 90 minutes long; other counseling sessions after that are 45 to 50 minutes each. Weekly appointments are a good idea, at least in the beginning, in order to build a therapeutic relationship and get some momentum on dealing with your issues. How long a course of counseling lasts depends on a number of factors including how you perceive the problems, their severity and length of persistence, and even such outside elements as childcare or work schedules. A person often "knows" when a problem or situation has been resolved. Couples Counseling Couples who love and care about each other can sometimes experience difficulties. You might realize that it's harder to talk to your partner about your real feelings or concerns. You might notice that arguments (often about the same topics) are getting more intense or happening more frequently. You may be feeling that life events (work-related stress, a new baby, an illness,) have overwhelmed your relationship. You may have tried to work things out together on your own; but the changes don't seem to last very long, or you both end up more angry and frustrated than if you didn't try at all. You might be married, living together, dating, or deciding whether making a serious commitment is what you are looking for. This is where couples counseling can make a difference. With the guidance of a warm, genuine, and experienced counselor, you can develop improved communication skills, learn to set necessary boundaries, learn to clarify your needs & healthy ways to meet them, and practice expressing difficult thoughts and feelings in less explosive ways. You'll be reminded and encouraged about the strengths and positive qualities that brought the two of you together in the first place. The supportive counseling environment makes dealing with the problematic parts more tolerable. Couples counseling will also explore each person's understanding of the family they grew up in and how their familial experiences and expectations mesh with those of their partner. Very frequently, some significant issues are still quite alive in the current relationship; having a map of the "minefields" can help you work things out before they get out of control. An initial couples assessment is about 90 minutes long; subsequent sessions are one hour. The couple and counselor work together to plan the course of the treatment and the goals.

Is it a relationship that is causing you a lot of conflict and stress? Have you experienced an incredible loss of someone you love and you are mourning? Do you have memories of trauma that are intruding in your mind, making it difficult for you to feel grounded and at peace today? Struggling through these types of difficult experiences and dealing with painful feelings is something that you do not need to do alone. However, contemplating going to counseling for the first time, or returning to therapy to work on some new or old issues is an anxiety provoking process. However, there is something happening for you right now that brought you to this place at this moment, as you are reading this message. ...there is hope...there is help...
Life can be difficult and at times people may require the assistance of a professional counselor to aid them in resolving challenges in their lives. Truth and Grace Counseling, LLC, was established to provide an opportunity for individuals, couples, and families to receive therapy in a nonjudgmental environment from Karen M. Bridwell, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), who is dedicated to helping people more fully enjoy their life and purpose. Truth was chosen because there is a healing power that can be realized when the truth concerning a challenge is revealed and accepted, and Grace was chosen because Karen believes that conveying truth in a compassionate manner is important in therapy. There are varieties of reasons why people seek counseling, but no matter the motivation, Karen believes they want and need to be accepted right where they are. She approaches each individual's unique story from a nonjudgmental position, as she seeks to understand the client's perspective in an effort to help them overcome their challenges. She is a goal-oriented counselor who uses a combination of therapies with clients, selecting the techniques that work best with each individual as together she and the client decide, develop, and pursue agreed upon objectives. Developing a therapeutic relationship is important as she and the client work together to uncover the thoughts and behaviors that are counterproductive in the life of the person. Then Karen has the client put into practice the alternative thoughts and behaviors that make possible the positive changes that will enable them to more fully enjoy their life and purpose.

Find Solutions to Your Concerns in a Safe Confidential Place
My approach to therapy is to at first listen to and understand the issues that are most important to you. Your feelings are valid, and I want to understand you and the concerns that you have. My role is to guide you in finding new solutions to problems, new ways in which to view issues, and to increase the possible options about how to address your concerns. I believe that therapy is a partnership. We can work together to identify what is concerning you, what you want to change, and to set realistic goals. We can discuss a time frame for therapy. Some people want short-term specific goal oriented therapy. You might need to address something that is currently occurring that is very troublesome. There may be specific life issues or problems that you are experiencing for which you want relief or to become unstuck. Some of these issues might be related to family, marital, or other relationship problems, anxiety, grief, employment, or other life issues and stressors. You may want longer-term therapy. Perhaps you are looking for support in managing and coping with a chronic medical condition, pain, mental health issues, a loss, trauma, or alcohol and substance abuse. Whatever your issues and concerns, we can work together to meet your specific needs. I wish to offer you a safe, quiet, pleasant atmosphere in which to discuss your personal concerns. All information discussed is kept strictly confidential under the State of Illinois and Federal HIPAA Laws. Feel free to contact me with your questions and to further inquire about whether I am the right therapist for you.

GLBT friendly. As couples counselors and marriage therapists, we are committed to helping couples who may be in conflict find productive ways to move past the hurts, heal the wounds and strengthen relational bonds. We have found that both couples and individuals find it useful to talk with a counselor in order to discover more effective, meaningful ways of working through relationship issues. Our approach is gentle, conversational, warm and interactive. We encourage emotional sharing as a conduit to healing and growth. Offered to both individuals and couples, our therapists teach practical communication skills with the goal of helping both parties in the relationship reach a place of deeper understanding and healing. Our goal is to bring a sense of joy into your relationship and to reinforce things that are working right while helping to create change around challenge areas. I Am Here to Work Alongside You as You Make Positive Change!
I work alongside individuals and families as we work together to heal their wounds and transform their lives. Using a holistic approach, I take into consideration the mind, body, and spirit, and how these elements interact and respond to the external environment. I will work with you to improve harmony among these components of the self in order to increase positive and healthy functioning in your daily life. I work to assist you in identifying your fears, negative core beliefs and values, and how they have caused dysfunctional pat terns in your current personal, professional, and spiritual lives. Through treatment, I can help with modifying your unhealthy thoughts and coping skills. I can help you discover new mindfulness and body awareness techniques that will enhance your confidence, your physical, and emotional functioning. Using a strengths-based approach, I firmly believe that regardless of what obstacles you are facing, there is always hope and opportunity for change to occur. With my extensive training and experience with childhood development, I enjoy working with families with children, new parents (couples and singles), and pregnant/expecting women. I am able to assist families going through major life transitions such as divorce, remarriage and blended families, new babies or newly adopted children, coping with a miscarriage, and infertility issues. I am also qualified and competent at working with individuals, families, and children experiencing anxiety, depression, overall stress, job-related issues, life adjustment issues, trauma, domestic violence, parenting issues, and self-esteem issues. My experience working in community mental health and with survivors of domestic violence has helped me to be highly effective at quickly assessing a situation and creating an immediate plan of action for that day to begin the process of alleviating any stress or discomfort you are experiencing. Whether you are dealing with mental illness such as bipolar, or you are just in need of someone to talk to, I am here to be a fellow traveler with you as we process and tackle the issues you are facing! Psychotherapy and Transformational Movement
My therapeutic approach is an integrative one. My method is based on a combination of the mind, body, emotions, and spiritual faculties. I encourage clients to express their feelings, thoughts, and emotions not only verbally but also through movement and stillness.I am warm, empathic, and committed to my clients. I have a great capacity to connect from soul to soul. My therapeutic orientation is eclectic, with discussion and movement techniques play a primary role. At times, I employ The Nia and the 5 Stages of Self-Healing Techniques to help clients express their feelings through movement. The ideal client is prepared for a new journey and experience. Clients who work with me soon realize that their strength and freedom comes from within. They feel liberated from their emotional constrains and fears. Through therapy, my clients discover that "They" are the creators and drivers of their own lives. They experience emotional freedom that, in turn brings more balance in their lives. Clients achieve stress relief, improve their self-esteem and self-concept, and experience increased levels of satisfaction in their relationships. They experience an increased ability to work out conflicts in a constructive way.

Healing from painful life experiences can be difficult on your own. If you are currently struggling with challenges in your life, participating in therapy is a proactive way to make changes. By working together, you will gain greater insight into your thoughts and behaviors. With this increased self-awareness you can begin to change those things you’d like to change about yourself and end self-defeating patterns of behavior. I believe the client/therapist relationship is one of the most important aspects of therapy. I offer a supportive, non-judgmental environment in which we will work together to help you achieve your goals. I view each client as a unique individual and work from the assumption that you know yourself best. However, I will challenge you to consider new ways of looking at issues and help you learn new tools and coping techniques to deal with the challenges you are facing. I work with clients in individual and group settings. Currently, I am accepting new clients for individual counseling and a postpartum support group. I also work with couples interested in premarital counseling using the PREPARE/ENRICH program. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you.
