Transformative Healing: A Journey Toward Meaning
Compassionate Care for Grief and Trauma Recovery
Dr. Matthew Paldy I work with individuals and couples suffering from grief, trauma, and emotional wounds that often lie beneath everyday functioning. My practice is grounded in a depth-oriented, relational approach that honors both conscious experience and the powerful, often unspoken forces of the unconscious. My work is shaped by two guiding principles: * Deep Listening: A psychoanalytic approach that helps you understand how loss, trauma, and early experiences live on inside you—shaping your feelings, relationships, and sense of self. * Trauma-Informed Care: A sensitive, attuned, and collaborative process that respects the impact of trauma on the body, mind, and relationships. Together, our work can help you: Process grief, loss, and traumatic experiences that may feel overwhelming, frozen, or unresolved. Make sense of emotional pain that can feel confusing, isolating, or impossible to put into words. Reconnect with your inner strengths, capacities, and capacity for meaning, even in the aftermath of suffering. I engage with the whole of who you are—your thoughts, emotions, memories, relationships, and hopes for the future. I see therapy as a shared journey in which you are not alone with your pain. It is deeply meaningful to accompany my clients as they mourn, heal, and gradually rediscover connection, purpose, and vitality in their lives. My approach is grounded in clinical expertise, lived human understanding, and deep respect for how difficult grief and trauma can be. My hope is that together we can better understand your story, give voice to what has been silenced, and help you move forward in ways that feel authentic, safe, and meaningful.

Are you looking for a therapist who will not only listen to you, but also speak and offer constructive feedback, instead of just sitting quietly in the background? For many people, it is important to find a therapist who will work to understand you and also actively help you learn about yourself and make changes that lead to a happier life. Some clients have told me that they tried psychotherapy in the past and shared much with the therapist, but ultimately left therapy feeling they received little in return. In my 12 years as a psychologist in Manhattan, I have always been straightforward and interactive with clients. At the same time, I am also a good listener and view my client as a partner in the therapeutic process. My goal—our goal—is to enhance your self-awareness and therefore enable you to become liberated from self-defeating patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The purpose of my work is to decrease your suffering while helping you fulfill your unique potential as an individual. I take what I do very seriously, but I also believe there is a place for humor in my work. I see no contradiction between sometimes being playful while always remaining an effective, serious, and focused healer. My main priority is to create a setting in which you feel understood and free to express and learn about yourself. Creating such an atmosphere always varies depending on the individual. This means that together, over time, we will “custom-fit” your therapy to facilitate your psychological growth.

I believe each of us has the ability to change. A therapist in Brooklyn, NY. I assist individuals and couples to better understand themselves and create healthy, successful relationships. I provide couples counseling, marriage counseling, family therapy, and relationship counseling to improve communication and end conflicts. Other areas of focus include: resolving issues of anger and stress and overcoming depression, shyness and anxiety. In addition to assisting people with the problems of self-esteem, aging, and self-assertion, I work with individuals coping with illness, grief and loss. Concentrating on individual, relationship and parenting issues. I support people in exploring emotions and overcoming barriers to communication so positive relationships can result. Each individual has unique qualities and talents. Through therapy, we can free ourselves from what holds us back, keeping us from achieving what we want in life. As a writer, I am especially interested in working with writers and creative artists to develop and free their creativity. In addition to providing therapy, I write articles, train therapists at CHD and have taught at the New School ("Exploring the Mind/Body Connection") and Learning Annex ("Stop Being Nice").

Use Who You Are to Change How You Are
At Keene Murray Therapy, our approach to helping people is: Creative. Our work is shaped both by our immersion in creative arts and by our extensive background in a variety of psychological approaches. Respectful. We recognize that our clients are the only ones who can truly tell their story. Our function is to help clients identify and achieve their goals. Non-pathologizing. We believe that most problems are simply former solutions that no longer work. We help clients discover more adaptive means to meet life's challenges. Collaborative. We value the interpersonal quality of a therapeutic relationship that acknowledges the effects and influences that both client and therapist contribute. Depth-oriented. Experience has shown us that significant change has its roots in the multi-layered interconnectedness of a person's inner life. We accompany clients as they explore and learn to navigate this strange and exciting territory. Groups I work with include: Elders facing adjustment or end-of-life issues, couples (including gays/lesbians) with relationship difficulties, families experiencing inter-generational problems, victims of trauma (e.g., car accidents, violent attacks, natural disasters), children and teens needing psychological assessment of intellectual and/or emotional functioning. We offer phone and video-conference therapy sessions. Home/site visits are available in our neighborhood. We operate on a fee-for-service basis, accepting payments by cash or check. We provide receipts for insurance reimbursement purposes. Check with your insurance company about their out-of-network policy.

Psychotherapist for Individuals and Couples
I believe what is accomplished in psychotherapy is co-created by both the patient and the therapist. I am interactive and relational. I have training and experience in a wide variety of issues and have worked with people from many different backgrounds. I believe in tailoring the treatment to the individual rather than trying to fit the person into a particular theory. Therapy is about self-actualization. There are many roadblocks to becoming the person we want to be. I see therapy as a way of understanding and eliminating these blocks. Self-knowledge provides us with choices. When we understand our patterns, it becomes easier to get past them. I specialize in LGBTQ issues and work with individuals and couples. My practice is diverse in terms of age, ethnicity, and sexuality and gender identification. I have extensive experience with trauma and survivors of sexual abuse. I love my work and have a natural curiousity and interest in people.

Individual, Couple and Family Therapy
In my 19 years of experience, I have come to realize that for many people the idea of trusting someone with their personal struggles and life issues can be very scary. It takes courage to reach out for professional help when life's challenges are more than you can handle on your own. Sometimes it helps to talk to someone outside your immediate circle of family and friends. You may be stressed about your marriage, children, family, relationship, job, health, or finances. Maybe you have suffered a severe trauma or loss. Perhaps you have a tough decision to make and need some guidance. All of these issues can be addressed in therapy. Helping others has been my life's work. Professional training and education, coupled with a vast array of personal life experiences, gives me the wisdom and compassion to connect with clients in a therapeutic way. I see you as a person on a life journey toward meaning and happiness, not as a problem list. This work is a privilege for me. A healing relationship with a compassionate therapist can provide you with the safety, support and guidance you need to create lasting change in your life. Individual Family, and Couple therapy are the modalities I use to help clients regain their ability to handle daily life stressors and emotional problems. I have extensive experience helping people with a variety of life challenges that include the treatment of: Relationship issues Depression Low self esteem Anxiety Work related issues Grief and loss Problem solving Addiction Trauma

Daniel Minuchin Family Therapist
I am an experienced family therapist. I work with married and unmarried couples, with families, and do individual work with adults. My experience is that when working with children and teenagers around the whole variety of issues that bring them into treatment, it is quicker and more effective to work with the whole family together than to work with the child alone. For children their families are central and shifts in the family impact on children and adolescents in a powerful way that therapists working alone cannot match. I also work with families where issues have arisen between adult parents and children and between adult siblings. I also have found hypnotherapy to be a useful tool particularly in helping people to deal with issues of anxiety and depression. As a family therapist I am always attentive tho the importance of the significant relationships in our lives. I am attentive to the patterns that develop in families and couples and how those become stuck, and how to help people change them. I also try and pay attention to the positive aspects of people's lives, their strengths and resources and how to enhance those. Often, in difficult circumstances attention becomes over focused on problems and strengths get ignored. Families can create problems but they are also a source of healing. My office is in midtown Manhattan. I do have some evening hours. I have a sliding scale. For people who are unsure about starting therapy, or wish to meet with me before making a decision, I am happy to set up a free meeting to talk with them.

You are struggling with the relationships in your life. Perhaps your primary relationship leaves you unfulfilled, disappointed or you find it is full of conflict. Maybe the same feelings of hurt and sadness keep surfacing, arguments are repetitive or you look across the table and wonder why you are together at all. Are you feeling confused? Unfulfilled? Not sure where to turn? It might be time to ask for help. In my practice each person is a unique individual, and believe we each need this validation for there to be growth and development. As a Creative Arts Psychotherapist, Psychoanalyst, and Clinical Social Worker, and EMDR practitioner, my aim is to meet your needs using whichever approach is most effective. Often feelings of discontent stem from unrealized overwhelming experiences, past or present. In session we explore these areas, and discover what is most relevant for you. My specialization is in relational attachment, creative blocks, and trauma. Modalities include art therapy, talk therapy, and EMDR. The services I offer are provided in a safe, comfortable environment, where we can focus on your needs and concerns. Licensed Cognitive Therapist
As a certified cognitive therapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns and negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Cognitive Therapy was created by Aaron Beck, MD at the University of Pennsylvania , but now practiced as the primary form of therapy all over the world. "Cognitive" literally means knowing or thinking, so CT emphasizes directly changing how we think. By changing how we think, we can change our emotional and behavioral reactions. CT emphasizes interventions such as, evidence based thinking, hypothesis testing our thoughts, activity scheduling and prediction. It is the most scientifically proven therapy and the "Gold Standard" treatment for depression and anxiety disorders; scientifically proven controlled research trials have shown its effectiveness is often comparable to medication therapy. CT has also gone on to accumulate hundreds of proven effective results for anxiety disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, phobias, marital discord, ADHD, and aspergers syndrome, etc. Joseph is credentialed by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. The only national credentialing organization standardizing Cognitive Therapy. Since CT has become the most proven and recommended type of therapy, many psychotherapists now claim to know how to do CT, unfortunately very few are actually credentialed or trained to do so.

CREATIVITY & RESOLUTION...
Finding the right therapist for you, or your child, is important. As a drama therapist and licensed creative arts therapist, I believe creative process is fundamental to development and well-being. Through verbal sessions, or combined with creative arts and drama therapy techniques, I provide a safe space to explore thoughts and feelings, working toward resolution at your own pace. My approach is particularly effective with children and adolescents. Incorporating play and creative arts, I provide therapy that allows children to overcome personal issues in a safe, age-appropriate form, increasing their sense of play and coping skills for life conflicts. I work with teenagers, understanding the complex nuances of this age, to allow them the ability to express their feelings, ambivalence and confusion around their future. With teens and adults, sessions may focus on working through underlying emotional issues, coping with difficulties and establishing goals for enhanced self-image and confidence. I can help you evaluate various roles you play in life, positive and negative, and make desired changes to develop new roles, new ways of seeing yourself and feeling confident in life. I am LGBTQ-affirmative and support all people in their endeavors to find a happier, more complete sense of self.

Online Psychotherapy
I offer an alternative to traditional in-office therapy through secure, HIPAA compliant video sessions on doxy.me. My practice is rooted in accessibility, compassion, and integration, making therapy available to anyone seeking growth, healing, or clarity no matter where they are. I work with adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions, and the complex emotional patterns that shape our lives. As an Integrative Therapist, I draw from a variety of theoretical approaches including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, mindfulness-based, and humanistic frameworks. This allows me to tailor each session to the unique personality, needs, and goals of the individual. Rather than adhering to a single model, I help clients uncover what truly works for them, whether it’s developing insight into the past, learning new coping skills, or cultivating emotional regulation in the present moment. My approach emphasizes authenticity and collaboration. I believe that therapy should be a safe and supportive partnership where you can explore your story without judgment. Many clients come to therapy feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or uncertain about how to move forward. Together, we work to transform those feelings into understanding and action. You will find that our sessions balance structure with flexibility, allowing space for both emotional depth and practical problem solving. Online therapy offers the utmost convenience, privacy, and comfort. Sessions can be scheduled at times that fit your lifestyle, removing the obstacles of travel, traffic, and scheduling conflicts. Many clients appreciate the ability to connect from their own home or private space, where they often feel more relaxed and open to self-reflection. We need to feel understood, safe, and supported to create life-long change, and in my practice I work to establish a respectful and warm relationship where this growth and development can occur. I believe each person is capable of tremendous change and view giving the gift of therapy as an honor. I find by exploring both the past and the present, clients are better able to recognize life patterns which may be affecting their relationships, career, and overall mental health. However, I also believe each person is unique and do not utilize a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Rather, I work with clients in a collaborative manner, and together we establish the direction and pace of our work. I work with individuals and couples from a variety of cultural, ethnic, and spiritual backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities. Overall, I think you will find my approach open, flexible, affirming, and engaging. Clients usually begin sessions with a variety of concerns such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem concerns, or problems with romantic and personal relationships. I also work with clients on issues of trauma and past abuse, body image and eating disorders, LGBTQI issues, and women's issues.

Stuck In Patterns That No Longer Serve You Well?
Why Aren't Things Working Out Like You Thought They Would?
If you can’t seem to make things work for you, and you want to talk to someone about how to change that, I can help. My job is to provide you with insight into how you get in your way of getting the things you want in life, so you can make changes that will serve you better than the same old same old way of doing things that keeps you stuck in patterns with undesirable outcomes. No doubt about it, change is hard. You’ve been who you are for a long time, and are used to navigating our difficult world in a particular way. The problem is, it just isn’t working. So it’s not surprising that you’re confused, conflicted, anxious or depressed. I have a flexible approach to working with people, since one size does not fit all. My twelve years of training and over a quarter century’s worth of experience working with people has paid off. I’ve learned to listen in a non-judgmental way, and to help you feel safe in revealing your fears, feelings and thoughts, all in your own time, at your own pace. There may be things you want to change about yourself, and other things you want to keep. You get to make all the decisions about who you are and want to be. I’m here to point out what might work better for you, but not to tell you what to do. There’s no magic that can turn things around instantly, but if you’re committed to the process you can make significant strides in a reasonable period of time. I invite you to come in for a no-obligation consultation to see if you feel comfortable talking with me about what in your life is not how you want it to be. If you choose not to continue with me, there's no charge for the consultation.

Among the therapeutic techniques I offer, alone or in combination, are SENSORIMOTOR PSYCHOTHERAPY, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, EMDR, Short-Term Solution Focused Psychotherapy, Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy, and Ericksonian Hypnotherapy.. i have trained with some of the leading experts in the field of Psychotherapy. But the MOST IMPORTANT thing that I bring to my clients' healing process isn't what I know. IT'S WHAT I UNDERSTAND.

I firmly believe that we as human beings grow in relationships as an empathic and attuned other bears witness to our struggles; my role is to provide a safe environment and a skilled ear in which you are able to become better acquainted with yourself: your thinking, behavior, and feelings so that you can ultimately live a more fulfilled life. For some this means a few months of work and for others a few years. My approach is integrative, collaborative, and informed by my training in depth psychology. Many have described me as gentle, empathic, and non-judgmental. I work with you to illuminate and build on your strengths and empower you to conquer negative patterns so you have greater emotional and overall psychological freedom. Our work takes a commitment from both you and I as we travel together on a journey to help you understand more about yourself and make the changes you desire in your life. My experience is that when we are able to make internal change we are then able to take the next step and make external change. Whether it be depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship problems or any other struggles, you don't have to do it alone. Give me a call and lets take the next step together.

Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapist
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with years of training and experience in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy practices and technique. Cognitive Therapy lends itself well to all psychological disorders, including challenges associated with problematic styles of personality and mood. Within that framework, I incorporate schema based methods, guiding clients in the discovery and understanding of how core beliefs are developed and influence day to day decisions, behaviors and reactions. Mindfulness skills are taught, encouraging self- awareness, self acceptance and emotional balance. My goal is to teach you what I've learned, arming you with the skills needed for effective functioning and overall well being. Sessions are organized, collaborative and solution focused. Through guided discovery you'll identify patterns of thought and how those patterns influence emotions and behaviors. Modifying dysfunctional thinking is a first step towards improvement. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety disorders; panic, OCD, phobias, generalized anxiety and more. Working with diverse populations and age groups, listening for what's said and unsaid, can lead to a rich, warm, and highly productive, working relationship.

Psychoanalysis in the 21st Century
You might be seeking therapy to get past long-standing anxiety, depression, trauma or other emotional hurdles. As a therapist who offers psychoanalytic and psychodynamic therapy, I work to help you uncover the unconscious conflicts that drive these painful feelings and are the barrier to lasting progress. These unconscious patterns often can affect your relationships, cause physical pain, unwanted dependencies, loneliness, insomnia, phobia, career dissatisfaction and rage. Together, we can bravely and safely explore the different parts of who you are, bringing to light desires and fears that underly the pain you have been experiencing. Our work can help you move forward to accept all parts of yourself and find new ways of being, producing long-lasting change so you can find your own unique and fulfilling way to live your life. It is important that you find someone with whom you are comfortable to do this work. I invite you to schedule an initial consultation with me to see if we are a good fit for each other.

Psychotherapy for Feeling Better
Perhaps you want to expand your life, have richer and less problematic relationships, do work that is more gratifying and more engaging of your creativity. In short, you want a better life, and it's begun to feel as if time is passing you by. In therapy, you and I will work together so you may develop the courage to stand behind yourself, while also enjoying intimate relationships. We will find ways of listening to your deepest voice. The goal is to help you gain inner freedom--the freedom to be yourself, to love genuinely, and to do your best work. Incessant self-questioning and self-doubt can be exhausting. How do we change the attitudes and patterns that keep us stuck? Contemporary brain science has brought a lot to the therapy table. We now know how to teach people, through their own mental efforts, how to change the structure of their brains so that it can begin to function in new and healthier ways. Consider these negative, or self-doubting ideas: I'm too old to be single. I'm too self conscious to take a dance class (or work out in a gym). I've missed my chance in life. I don't look good enough to attract someone. These are false thoughts, and people spend years of their lives believing them. Even when they know they're dysfunctional and rob them of joy in life, they're convinced these negative ideas are impossible to get rid of. They're not. We have many new techniques and methodologies to help patients change their negative negative thought processes and begin feeling about themselves in entirely new ways. One method that I use with my patients is called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Big mouthful, I know, but it's actually a very straight forward way of helping people re-process their negative thinking. During EMDR therapy the patient attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. I use an audio device that produces pleasant tones (they go back and forth from the left ear to the right, via headphones.) The patient listens to the tones while thinking about a fear or an unpleasant or even frightening experience. Every minute or so I check in to see how the patient is feeling and what she or he is thinking. This way we can both monitor what's happening in the patient's mind . We can also introduce new and more positive ways of thinking about the material the brain is working on. In my practice I've found that EMDR can produce marked mental/emotional improvement in a relatively brief period of time. Sometimes the effects of trauma make it hard to trust others. Sometimes depression drains us of emotional energy. I am trained to treat trauma, anxiety and depression. The patient's ability to feel safe in my office comes first. We work together in an atmosphere of warmth and calm. This is the patient's journey. I will listen deeply to your words and feelings and perceptions, and help us toward a deeper understanding of who you are and where you want to be in life. Blending conventional and alternatives approaches to therapy, I draw on a variety of styles and techniques, incorporating what is most helpful to the individual. EMDR is one tool I use. I also teach patients special breathing techniques for calming anxiety and being able to regulate their emotions. Once they've learned different mindfulness techniques people become able to regulate overwhelming or flooding emotions, whether it be fear, or rage, or irritability, or sadness. It's very empowering when the brain can tame emotions.

Are your relationships troubled and disappointing? Do your fears and worries get in the way of your being your most creative, productive self? Do you sometimes find yourself in the same situations or repeating behaviors over and over, and you don't know how to find your way out? Habitual ways of reacting and behaving often began as the means of coping with the stresses of childhood, but are no longer useful or appropriate. I would like to help you become "unstuck", become less anxious and worried, feel more comfortable with yourself and happier with your relationships and work. In sessions, I work to listen deeply and create an accepting atmosphere. There, you can become curious about your thoughts, feelings and actions, explore how your past is influencing your life today and confront the repeating patterns of emotional reaction and behavior that get in the way of your finding satisfaction in your relationships and work. My approach to therapy is eclectic with a strong psychodynamic base for understanding the problems that bring people to seek help. In addition to my training in psychology, my early training was as a dance/movement therapist and I continue to have an interest in the connection between mind, body and emotions and the nonverbal aspects of communication and relating.

Achieve Your American Dream
And enjoy more ease in the process
Are you feeling lost or stuck in your life or some aspect of it? Do you feel like you are on a treadmill and lacking a deeper sense of meaning in your life? Do you feel a gap between where you are and where you want to be? I want to help you achieve your American Dream – discover it, define it and go after it. I also want to help you find more pleasure in your daily life – those simple joys that might be passing you by unnoticed. It is possible to do both. Through dialogue, exercises and sensory exploration, you will gain the focus you need to create the life you truly desire while carving out time and space to live a full and passionate existence right now. Life is too short to live a life unfulfilled. In one on one sessions (in person, on the phone or via Skype), together we create strategies so that life is as rich and fulfilling as it can be. We find ways to manage stress, deal with the overwhelm of modern life and find creative ways to solve problems. We are collaborators in the process, and I am here to support and guide you as well as provide accountability so you make progress.

I am a New York State licensed marriage and family therapist who works with individuals, couples and groups. I emphasize collaboration and my goal is to support you on your path towards self empowerment, understanding and connection. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we can unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. I have had a long history of self exploration and the tools I offer are ones I have used and found to be effective in my own life; tools which you can learn to resolve your own issues. If you are an individual wanting support around a particular issue or just have a desire to be heard and understood; if you are a couple who needs support in resolving conflict or learning more effective communication skills, consider contacting me. Please call or email me for an individual, couples or family therapy session today.
