Transformative Healing: A Journey Toward Meaning
Compassionate Care for Grief and Trauma Recovery
Dr. Matthew Paldy I work with individuals and couples suffering from grief, trauma, and emotional wounds that often lie beneath everyday functioning. My practice is grounded in a depth-oriented, relational approach that honors both conscious experience and the powerful, often unspoken forces of the unconscious. My work is shaped by two guiding principles: * Deep Listening: A psychoanalytic approach that helps you understand how loss, trauma, and early experiences live on inside you—shaping your feelings, relationships, and sense of self. * Trauma-Informed Care: A sensitive, attuned, and collaborative process that respects the impact of trauma on the body, mind, and relationships. Together, our work can help you: Process grief, loss, and traumatic experiences that may feel overwhelming, frozen, or unresolved. Make sense of emotional pain that can feel confusing, isolating, or impossible to put into words. Reconnect with your inner strengths, capacities, and capacity for meaning, even in the aftermath of suffering. I engage with the whole of who you are—your thoughts, emotions, memories, relationships, and hopes for the future. I see therapy as a shared journey in which you are not alone with your pain. It is deeply meaningful to accompany my clients as they mourn, heal, and gradually rediscover connection, purpose, and vitality in their lives. My approach is grounded in clinical expertise, lived human understanding, and deep respect for how difficult grief and trauma can be. My hope is that together we can better understand your story, give voice to what has been silenced, and help you move forward in ways that feel authentic, safe, and meaningful.

Are You Feeling Stuck? Anxious? Depressed?
Therapy for Individuals, Couples & Families
The saying "An examined life is not worth living" always comes to mind when I encounter an individual who is mired down in problems and unable to find happiness. That you are visiting this page tells me you have already embarked on a path to address the issues that are stopping you from moving forward. In a warm and safe environment I can provide you with the tools you need to indeed live the life you wish to live. Together we can explore and uncover the obstacles that prevent you from enjoying the relationships you deserve along with the dreams and goals you want to pursue. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY While I use many different approaches in therapy, including talk therapy, I work through an attachment lens which means that sometimes it is important to explore one's past to see how it affects you in the present. I believe everyone benefits from finding new options to address previously self-defeating patterns. I also like to incorporate mindfulness practices into my therapeutic work. My clients have observed that their overall functioning has dramatically improved by practicing mindfulness in their daily lives. COUPLES When two individuals come together I am often reminded of the expression, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." Relationships require nurturing and attention and sometimes with the best of intentions, couples drift apart or arrive at an impasse. I am marriage friendly, LGBTQ friendly, and believe that most couples have the ability to work out their dissatisfaction with one another. Much of the time, with commitment and a desire to rekindle long-lost feelings, couples, with the help of therapy, can master the communications skills they need to find emotional safety and connection in their relationship.

Psychologist
Pleasantville, NY 10570
As a clinical psychologist with 20 years of experience in counseling centers, hospitals and medical centers, I have devoted my practice to helping adults suffering from stress, worry, anxiety and depression, often associated with life transitions, loss, problems in relationships or careers, pregnancy/postpartum, and/or medical conditions. For some, there is a known event that has triggered the anxiety or depression, while others may have a more difficult time identifying a precipitant and it seems as if it has always been there. In every case, I work with each individual to assist in learning effective methods to manage stress and anxiety, improve mood, and increase quality of life. In addition to my general practice, I have a personal interest in helping people improve their health and wellness. Having specialized postdoctoral training in clinical health psychology enables me to also offer effective treatment and coaching for insomnia/sleep difficulties, chronic pain, IBS, smoking cessation and weight loss. I feel privileged to witness the change that occurs as clients overcome difficulties, achieve their goals, and lead more satisfying lives. My approach is collaborative, active, supportive and real. I use evidence-based therapy that is individually tailored to be the most effective for you. I have completed specialized training in several treatments proven to be effective for a range of problems. These include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression, Anxiety and Worry, Panic Attacks, Fears and Phobias, Insomnia, Chronic Pain; Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depression, Grief/Bereavement, Relationship Issues; EMDR & Cognitive Processing Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD); and Motivational Interviewing. Our sessions together may include education on a particular area of concern, introduction and review of practical coping strategies (e.g. relaxation exercises, communication skills, time management, problem solving), finding ways to help you overcome obstacles that are keeping you stuck, or developing an action plan to assist you in achieving your goals. Often we will examine the interrelationship of your thoughts, feelings, behaviors and physiology and the impact on your life. Please contact me for a free telephone consultation to address any questions you have and learn more about my practice. I would love to have the opportunity to speak with you to discuss your needs and see how I may be of help to you.

Life Doesn't Slow Down for You to Figure It Out.
The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention…. ~ Rachel Naomi Remen This has been my professional email signature for seven, approaching eight, years as a Mental Health Counselor. Over these years, I have lobbied in Albany with the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS), worked with Westchester and Putnam MHA’s. While the statement above may seem simple and obvious, it is a daunting task to truly give one’s complete attention. Counseling skills involve ways of listening and speaking that help a person feel supported, understood, validated, and hopeful. This is a remarkable mission and why I feel that counseling these past years has not only been a job but also a commitment. To me, listening is a science and a core of Mental Health Counseling. Columbia’s Center for Practice Innovations, where I have done training, supports, as do I, the approach of Motivational Interviewing and the science and art of listening that makes up strengths-based, person-centered approaches. In applying these skills through counseling, and facilitating groups and training, I have seen countless individuals benefit. I have worked in multiple settings: In-patient adolescent, substance abuse and 12-step groups, PROS Day programs, individual counseling, care coordination, social skills after school programs, senior living, domestic violence crisis, clinics and more. I have seen dignity return as individuals experience defining themselves from a strengths-based perspective that does not focus on prescribing interventions to prevent “maladaptive behaviors”. I have utilized the Stages of Change model and been trained in DBT, EFT, IFS, Somatic Experiencing and received certificates in suicide prevention, CBT, wellness, and Play Therapy techniques. My resume will show, I also have been recognized with several professional awards. Needless to say, my professional experience is extensive.

Work, Relationships and Family Life Can Be Challenging
Active, Creative, Time-Sensitive Psychotherapy Can Help!
Life can be challenging! Are you are longing to feel more connected to your partner, feeling overwhelmed by work, trying to do it all and have no time for yourself? Whether relationship, work or family challenges are troubling you, I can help. Over the years I have developed my own unique style of psychotherapy which is Active, Creative and Time-sensitive. It is active, since I take an "Active" stance and help you figure out what is wrong and how to remedy the problems that are troubling you. The solutions will be derived using both your own and my "Creative" lens which will give you a new perspective on your life. My therapeutic approach is "Time-sensitive." This means that I will work with you to complete therapy as quickly as possible. I tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs. Drawing from a wide range of expertise & experience, we will collaboratively develop the best therapeutic plan for you. I involve clients actively in the process. Time-sensitive therapy is as brief as possible, but the therapeutic relationship lasts for a lifetime. Depending on the issues addressed, some clients may be in therapy for a few months while others may come for a few years. After completing a segment of therapy, over the years, clients often return for a tune up or to consult about a new issue or life challenge. Each time a client returns, therapy tends to be briefer.
